Yours might have been – I doubt every single Series 1 E-type was though? Certainly the ones I’ve been fortunate enough to have a crack in have been great (if not a little cramped in the footwell for me).

they were awful !! a mechanic friend got an inheritance in the late 60’s early 70’s and had a choice between a lotus elan and an e type

and although the jag was the cheaper car he opted for the better limited edition elan with coventry climax engine ( a car he still has today )

although it has not come out of the showroom in the last twenty years !!

But how would you want it though? Colour etc? For me, the perfect Aston Martin DBS as in colour wise is one Jeremy Clarkson drove on TopGear, that stunning looking green with the black/grey/titanium coloured looking wheels….uffff I had a trouser accident when I seen that. You’d miss your stop if you thought of that when you were due to get off. :diablo:

@richw_82, you lucky lucky thing you. I’d weep if I’d seen it for real, but looking at it just by pictures & seeing it on TV etc, its no wonder Mike Hawthorn called his ‘The Merceater’.

Being a non-driver all cars are dead boring,but when I was a kid my Dad had a Messerschmidt bubble car like this one,and I loved it.
Dad used to say you didn’t drive it,you wore it like a coat.
I can still remember being in it and looking up at the wheels of a bus.

My brain is struggling at this distance to recall if the Mk 1 1/2, which mine was, had the 3.8 engine mated with the 4.2 gearbox, or the 4.2 engine mated to the 3.8 gearbox. Either way it was horrid.

I can’t deny the car belongs in a survey of ‘cool’ cars, it certainly looks the part.

It just isn’t a very good car.

I’ll agree with you on that, it is very misrepresented in terms of top end performance… but I still wouldn’t be as harsh as to call it rubbish!

Rumours recently suggests that there may have been a **** up with the brakes; between the size of the caliper pistons and the master cylinder. I’m inclined to agree, as the same sytem was used on the early Mk X Jaguar, but with a slightly larger caliper.

Tell me; yours didn’t have the godawful Moss gearbox in it as well? Double declutching and very leisurely gear changes to avoid crunching noises…

It was a car that couldn’t get close to it’s promoted 150 mph top speed. Jaguar had a history of doing this, running modified prototypes on continental roads just the once and then telling customers that was what they would get. See XK120 launch.

Dunlop Disc Brakes. An anchor would have been better. Even from 100mph stopping was measured in miles, not in yards.

Ford Cortina MkIV. When it first came out I had to have one! Bought mine secondhand, lasted 11 years, only superceded by the Granada range.
Always had a Land Rover of some description under my backside whether military, HM Coastguard or my own but, the Discovery III TD6 with all the bells and whistles………phenominal. Had mine 2 years, there is no other car on the road I wanted since (ok maybe a newer one!).:)
