People keep mentioning that the F2’s AESA radar is not good/crap etc but are they really so stupid as to think the japanese would carry on flying the AESA radars without upgrading them or debugging them?
i thought they mentioned upgrading to the mirage 2000-9 standard.
Is HAL allowed to modify these aircraft at all?
Extend the nose? increase the diameter etc?
Maybe that is why the UK gave a green signal to providing the 27mm gun on the EF typhoon with ammo 😉

oki so been thinking about this at work, and the most i can licken it to is an ANTI stealth bird, this thing doesnt care who/what sees it, it isnt your ninja, it is your 6ft tall scottsman with a 8lb double edge sword and a kilt that screems blood.
It is a modified AN-225 it will carry extended range harpies and drones that are simple to eagle or something a bit more high speed.
Our company works extensivly with big defence contractors and i am in NY for about 10 days of talks and seminars and a few days back we had a couple of boeing gentlemen talk about how india and china’s composite industry ( and to produce composites in a comercial environ for a comrecial market and at commercial effeciencies) would be seriously consider for outsourcing work for the remaining 2 aircrafts in the PROJECT YELLOWSTONE , it would be interesting to see how that turns up , the contracts can be very very lucrative . I believe boeing looked at them for 787 aswell but shunned away due to the japanese manuf. KAI having much better ability to gurantee performance,cost and delivery shedules and ramp ups .
Fuji heavy industries is also implied, i dont think MHI has as large a role, dont know, did read just recently that FUJI (suburu) have just certified several VERY large autoclaves.
As for indias potential, yup its there with TATA and HAL but those guys need to start putting about what value added function they could add to the table, so that they dont end up as just being a tier 2 supplier.
As for China, hmm well lets see.
it isnt always the ramping up that costs but the overall cost of producing faster then is effecient . every order for manufacter has a certain optimal production rate which means a lot of things , a optimal force of skilled workers , engineers , composite workers , resin workers , autoclaves , etc which need to be taken into consideration . .
They can definately produce faster without worrying about skilled workers etc, it just depends on what they are doing now, if they are using ATL’s or fibre placement devices, what method for production they are using etc etc.
If what they had on the NAtional Geographic is true then for sure HAL can cut costs.
you dont really need skilled workers semi skilled would do in most places if you have a good foreman/superviser.
You dont want to pay for unnecc. engineers , workers etc even if those labour costs are cheaper in india the expectations are also for a cheaper product ( the LCA isnt going to be competing against JSF for export anytime soon) . for the f-22 ( which is and was a 150-200 order expectation ) they calculated that the optimal production rate would be between 25-30 raptors per annum , anything more then that would require added costs of workers , increasing lines which would most likely push up the cost per jet due to manufactering ( recurrent cost) whereas anything lower then that would bring up costs due to orders being to few a year to get better price from manufacters , suppliers etc .
Good information, i know about the Composite Affordability Initiative and the great stuff that has come out of that program for the US industry but i didnt know the details about the F-22 good stuff.
MARKET economics are same everywhere even though the scale is different but out here strategic importance can easily neglect all of that.

Once the tools and procedures for LCA panels skins and structures are designed and ironed out ramping up would not cost much!
shame that they cant use similar resins to that used by the skunk works recently launched UAV.
out of autoclave would definately help speed up LCA production and reduce overall costs.
The MRCA late or not may prove to be a REALLY good deal for india if they go with a NON US manufacturer.
I hope they slip in a few more orders of MKis to raise them to 250 MKis in total.
and lets upgrade each batch as they come! 🙂

i am not up on the systems side of aircraft, I was wondering if the US would ever think about going back to doing research into nuclear powered aircraft, or hydrogen powered engines.
Do you know what happened to the group of us scientist that were burning hydrogen in some kind of glass jar, they managed to get something like 80% efficiency.
I only put the A380 as it is an example of a large jet, personaly i hate the thing and think its ugly as a wart on bin laden armpit.

If i could choose i would like to have Boeing produce an all composite AN 225 with GenX or rolls royces replacement for the trent 1000.
The ship would be used for centry duty as an interim buffer before the big boy UCAVS can come in, if used for attack the ship would be used to launch a suprise first strike to wipe out any AD networks using anti radiation missiles ALACMs, UCAVS and DEWs
Oh, and OT, its been estimated that using hydrogen instead of avgas would increase DOC of commercial air by only 25%.
I was well astounded when I read that, I was fearing a several hundred percent rise in costs.

True if you see the mothership as only a transport ship, but if you look at it in terms of a AEW&C aircraft with a bunch of UCAVS under its direct control, couple of HARPYS for SEADS, some Cruise missiles and a few firescouts eagle eyes, and a formation of global flying in front of it.
It become a different beast and monster.

‘IAF may lose out to PAF’

MUMBAI: A crisis has been brewing in the Indian Air Force and it’s about to blow up in the face of the government. The Indian Air Force (IAF) top brass has informed the Union Government that if corrective measures are not taken immediately, India will lose its air superiority over Pakistan.“Unless immediate steps are taken to arrest the reduction in Indian Air Force’s force levels, the nation will for the first time in its history, lose the conventional military edge over Pakistan.”
This is a what the three-page letter of warning, written by Air Chief Marshall Tyagi to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, says.
A copy of the letter, which has raised serious concerns over the declining combat force level of the IAF, is available with CNN-IBN.
In his letter, the Air Chief Marshall writes, “Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is being beefed up with 44 F16s from America. They have a clearly defined goal of attaining parity with the IAF. With China supplying J 10 and JF 17 aircraft (fitted with Russian engines), PAF force levels of combat squadron will increase.”
“Unless steps are taken to move ahead with procurement, the IAF’s combat strength will deplete to a level, which would entirely neutralise the conventional superiority held by IAF since our Independence. PAF will have 19 to 26 squadrons by 2011-12, while the IAF could reduce to 26.5 by 2015.”

Might aswell have Bigger more sophisticated weapons and launch them from the likes of B-52’s etc , i mean think about a 500nm ranged LOCAAS with considerably more payload , even if the cost of a single weapon was to go up by say 10 times the cost would still be under a million dollars which would be ok considering what would be required to develop this mother ship and the aircraft flying out of it !! And by the way where would this aircraft have its aircraft return to?.
Any thing launched from the mothership would land back into the mother ship, wether it be a eagle eye/firescout or modified harpy
So you want to add ultra large weight to the allready hefty WHALEJET , put in some serious payload capacity and then turn around and make it operate from small and run down runways !!!

The 225 was designed for makeshift airfields 🙂 its nothing new.
By the time you can get alternative fuels to offer the same yeilds as conventional fuels given the same ammount the Genex would be obsolete and so would the A380 ( if its lucky to stay in production that long).
No not really, the USAF and several other airforces have been conducting studies into alternate fuels so that they reduce their reliance on oil. It makes perfect sence for Airforces and armed forces in general to start looking for an alternative source to oil.
As for GEnX well that is not an old engine, and technologies for it by no means old. it will be around for some time, ok so you might see different variations and generations of the same but none the less you will see something like a GEnX or RR’s new monster that would be greener and leener.
The fuel cells cant generate jack $hit as compared to the engines , a single engine on the 787 coupled with the bleedless thing and electrical generation system can generate more then half a Mw of power , thats enough to power 200 homes ( the entire thing generates more then 1.25Mw with enough to power 400 homes) , a solar panel setup even with terestrial effeciency of arounnd 30% ( the likes that we see in space sats + boieng leads the technology there) wont give you even a miniscule ammount of that power furthermore would this be just a day platform ?? DITTO with a fuel cell , better off going for some bigger bleedless engines for this monsters and packing in a genertor extra .

you are right, the engines do produce a lot of power but the green in me wanted a fluffy and green killing machine, instead of a horrible gas guzzler, just because man chooses to destroy himself why should the rest of the animal kingdom suffer! 🙂
