So what is the actual range? BR says its nine, and was nine for the Army and Airforce field protection version, did they alter things to increase range for the navy varient?

does anyone know why it didnt meet the Army requirements ? and why the IAF droped it?

Surface-to-air missile Trishul test-fired

India’s most sophisticated short-range surface-to-air missile, Trishul, was successfully test-fired from the Interim Test Range at Chandipur-on-Sea, Orissa, today.

The missile was test-fired twice at 0945 hours and 1010 hours IST.

The missile, having a range of 50km and specially designed for the Indian Navy, hit the targets dropped from the pilotless aircraft Nishant.

Trishul is one of the five indigenous missiles being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation under the Integrated Guided Missile Development programme.

It has a triple role for the three wings of the defence forces, the sources said.

A Czech contract to lease 14 Swedish Gripen jets over the next five or ten years is worth around 650 million euros (807 million dollars), a source close to the deal told AFP Friday.

“Those are the numbers we’re talking about,” the source, who asked to remain unnamed, told AFP.

While that is a far cry from the 2.2 billion euros the Czech Republic had decided to spend on 24 Gripen planes last year — before devastating floods forced it to scale back its budget — Swedish officials said they hoped the lease contract would help it land more NATO clients.

The Czech government decided Wednesday to pass up offers for United States F-16 planes and chose instead to lease the brand new Gripen jets as an interim air defence solution, making it the second NATO country after Hungary to choose fighters from non-aligned Sweden.

“That yet another NATO-country has chosen Gripen could hopefully tear down a number of the barriers that have possibly stopped others from making the same choice,” Swedish Defense Minister Leni Bjoerklund said in a statement Thursday.

Following news of the contract, which will be signed next year and put into effect in 2005, Swedish industry players Saab and Volvo said they hoped it would help Sweden win the much larger fighter jet contract it had been competing for in Brazil

India tested its Trishul anti-aircraft missile Friday for the second straight day, defence officials said.

The Trishul (“Trident”) was fired from a mobile launcher at a moving airborne target from the testing range in Chandipur in the eastern state of Orissa, they said.

It was the sixth test of the Trishul, which can deliver a 15-kilogram (33-pound) warhead up to nine kilometers (five miles) away.

Thursday’s test of the missile was described by defence officials as a success
