    I really don’t know why India would want Typhoon for A-G too… Typhoon is obviously not optimized for that. The fact that the targeting pod as mentioned, occupies the center pylon, is indicative of this. And IMHO it would be a waste of resources to use Typhoon for A-G.

    But, with Sukhois already in your inventory and PAK-FA around the corner, do you really need yet another A-A “specialist”? I think it’s overkill.

    Also, if you need something to fire Storm Shadows, since you upgrade the Mirage to -5mk2, what’s stopping you from buying SCALP EG from the French and using the Mirage as platform for “strategical strike”?

    IMHO, the “SDB” against SAMs, will only work against fixed SAM locations or “caught in the sleep” locations. Against mobile SAMs, which change firing positions regularly, the ARMs are still the best weapon. If not for anything else, the threat of ARM can keep a radar shut down. To counter SDBs, you just need to move to another position.

    India will find it difficult to achieve Air superiority over Chinese territory anyway and the strikes will probably aimed against critical military and civilian infrastructure and not SAM systems. With the Legacy systems the SAMs will need to be supressed or destroyed.This is where somethig like the F 35 would come handy, a sneaky strike 😉

    But, i admit that i have become Gripen NG fan myself lately, because it’s so flexible and economy-oriented. You can buy SCALP and MICA and use them both on the upgraded Mirage and on the Gripen (i am sure the Swedes will be happy to integrate the SCALP). I don’t know how many hours your Mirage have, but, at least the airframe is very sturdy. You could use it for a long time for SCALP platform. Think we still have Phantoms and A7s flying. Heck, we have Hueys flying. You could share the same weapons between Mirage and Gripen. I know, the Tejas is closer to the category of Gripen…

    We still have MiG 21s flying and not in small numbers.

    That’s why I said, if we take the Gripen E/F as too risky (and I agree with you on that), we have to take these issues of EF at least as serious too, because it would limit the operational capabilities of IAF!

    Certainly it will require a lot of work on its A2G. But things may be going faster on that regard as the UK limits its orders of the F 35.

    Sorry, but you’d be mistaken here. In strike, the F-16 Bk60 & SH both are pretty mature platforms by now. The latter is larger, has a newer airframe, and more growth potential. The Rafale would do ok as well. The EF would require some tweaking & addition (new munitions etc) but it too can be a very effective A2G aircraft here.

    The Block 60/Super Hornet will both find it extremly difficult to penetrate double digit SAMs and Flankers. And How many ARMs are we going to need. They are very expensive as well. The F 35 can get much closer and can use standard munitions instead of specialised anti radiation missiles like the HARM.

    You will either need stealth or Air Superiority to do a mission like that.

    Again, thats mistaken. Sukhoi had shown off a lot of stuff from French suppliers in the past as possible for integration in platforms like the Su-35, which is why the IAF thought it could be done. The point is its one thing to have them in prototypes, quite another to have them in actual operational aircraft, you’ll end up with many hassles! The Gripen NG is claiming to pull together all sorts of new gizmos including radar and IRST, a new airframe (ergo FBW changes), new avionics & displays, more fuel and payload (ergo structural work), and a new engine..low risk? Hardly.

    Yes shown of but have they actually done the integration for a production fighter before the MKI. SAAB has done it before with various versions of the Gripen, Viggen etc. They do not make most things in house and hence have much more experience integrating various foriegn systems. Now things can go bad but as they do have an excellent record in delivering products on time, they are definitley low risk.

    Sorry, but you are mistaken about the last statement – the IAF has a clear need for a light fighter, to the order of six (and even more) squadrons. But even if it has a need, it is to any bidders advantage that they push for these orders to be transferred to the MMRCA. The heavy aircraft cannot try this, but the other aircraft in discussion can.

    Fair enough, in this case do you think the IAF will settle for the Tejas MK2 even if (God forbid) it fails to live up to the expectations. Or will we see another purchase of a light fighter (another drawn out tender) just because the IAF has selected a heavy aircraft for the MRCA.

    How do you know the Tejas’s problems can’t be solved or that they are even critical to begin with? On the one hand, you are willing to believe any PR about an in development aircraft, but on the other hand, you apply a different yardstick to a simpler project..hardly makes sense. The Tejas MK2 is going to be simpler, design change wise, vis a vis the Gripen NG & with the developers in India itself, its rate of product maturity/fixes will be simpler. If you ditch the LCA transition from MKs and then pin your hopes on an AMCA, you are just repeating the Marut mistake all over again.

    I have never stated that its problems cannot be solved. The lack of thrust was mentioned as the sole reason for the Tejas failing to achieve required flight profiles AoA, STR etc. All I am saying is that IF (a big if) an engine with higher thrust (GE F414IN) don’t solve these issues, then basically we are looking at basic flaws in the aerodynamic design which cannot be corrected without a radical redesign.

    Dubious claims because the heavy Flanker will continue to have critical advantages over the smaller MiG. The MiG-35 has a ~700 mm dia radar dish & can at best fit a 650 odd mm radar in it. It also suffers from volume limitations whereas an upgraded Flanker has a radar dish more than 30% larger! This same yardstick translates to payload, to internal volume for avionics. It speaks volumes that the Su-27SK was regarded as a credible threat, when it is a barely upgraded variant of the earlier Su-27 series, and can still hold its own in most areas against an upgraded MiG-29 today!

    A Larger fighter with a larger radar is also a larger target. And even a smaller sized AESA will have its own advantages against a larger Mechanical array (More Resistant to Jamming, EW etc.). I agree that the MIG is perhaps the weakest of all the MRCA contenders but thats partly due to the lack of focus on rcs reduction than anything else.

    Costs are not the yardstick for victory an actual war when you end up requiring mission effectiveness per sortie, not cost effectiveness. The opponent won’t go easy on you because you have “cost effective fighters”, as versus battle effective ones. If you need more aircraft per complex sortie, you end up with more and more problems, across mission planning, across logistics and manpower to handle those fighters. Don’t fall into the trap of large numbers of “light fighters” are “cost effective” without looking at the big picture in mind.

    Second, the T-50’s are “in the future”, as far as now is concerned. They may come 2020 onwards, and will take 3-5 years to operationalize. Thats around a decade to a decade and a half from now. Till then, what will you do? Furthermore, India’s key opponent against which it requires deterrence has more heavy fighters than it does and will continue to add them as well.

    1. It can be a yardstick in many cases. Lower operational costs can mean more flying hours and training for the pilots and despite all the advancements pilot skill will by and large be decisive.

    2. In A2A the Gripen armed with Raven and Meteor will be a match to any Flanker out there in most scenarios. The Flanker has a bigger radar but also a larger RCS the Gripen has smaller RCS and therefore may detect the Flanker faster, the Meteor trumps the ChiCom missiles in terms of Range. You also have to look at the evolved datalink in the Gripen in a networked enviornment the Chinese flankers will find it very hard to beat the little one.

    3. Look at the Indian Defense Budget and that of China, Unless the Babus and Mantris wake up and increase it we cannot match China interms of heavy fighters. And the more you spend on on a heavy intensive Airforce the less you will have to spend elsewhere.

    4. It will be well beyond the 2020s when you see the MRCA in any significant numbes. It will take 3 years from the signing of the contract to the first fighter delivered. Then after the intial 18 there may be hitches in the local production and assembly especially if we go for the more ‘exotic’ birds.

    India can afford 180 hours plus simulator time for its pilots,which is quite sufficient to keep them upto spec. Aircombat does require pilot skill, but putting pilots up in aircraft that don’t provide an edge, after this much expense would be missing a valuable chance.

    I think you are underestimating the value of actual flying hours and training. You or I could be an ACE in a simulator. You are just assuming that something cheaper will not give the edge that we are looking for. This is a very interesting competiton by the choice of the winner may be we can see what the emphasis of the IAF is, whether its on a plane that offers higher capability or a competent platform which offers more flying hours.

    The point is that the IAF did not structure its requirements in that case well & hence could not justify the A330. In this case, the MMRCA tender has been well played out, with all stakeholders aware from the beginning. Its not a last moment thing where the MOF can raise an issue on the spur.

    Now I have read reports on the existance of a minimum compatibility matrix and also reports that if a single engined fighter meets the laid out requirements it will be chosen.

    I think its a competiton thats not very easy to predict the victor in.

    Given that the F35 can’t fly as high or as fast as at least one of the designs that are dismissed as “not 5th generation” i struggle to see how they are naturally disadvantaged?? :confused:
    The statement that the non 5th generation hold an edge in terms of situational awareness and electronics should be even more disturbing to a believer in the “5th generation” as without the former you are dead and the latter is what generally gives you the former. If “5th generation” can be upgraded with new electronics so can anything else. :confused:

    For the more rabid “believers” i’m at no stage attempting to claim that the Gripen, Typhoon or Rafale are “better” than the F22, F35 or T50 in all aspects.
    It is the level of un-critical belief above all else in the so called 5th generation that i take issue with.

    The Problem is the Raptor can equal or better the Rafale/Typhoon when it comes to passsive detection and situational awareness with a comprehensive avionics upgrade.

    But neither the Rafale nor the Typhoon can get what the Raptor has in terms of Stealth.

    In short the Raptors shortcomings can be negated with upgrades while that of the Eurocanards wrt to Raptor/T50 cannot be.

    You are probably right about the F 35, If its stealth advantage is somehow negated the Typhoon/Rafale can possibly better it in a close engagement, it has DAS and HOBS missiles but its only a matter of time before countermeasures for even the best SRAAMS come in.

    F 35 may take 10 years may be not if Japan is willing to pay more some partner nations may give Japan from their batches. The Typhoon AESA won’t be ready till 2015-16 either. Why are the Japanese not interested in the Rafale, its twin engined and much more mature at the moment than the Typhoon, also has more range and can carry more.

    Entertaining the propoisition for a minute; the very same thing can be leveled at the designs relying on shaping for their defence, once the shaping is negated they have nothing else to fall back on.

    Not a valid argument I am afraid the Raptor is as good or better than all the 4.5 gens in a dog-fight, I think going by their past record the T-50 will be as well.

    Even the F 35 claims to have the performance of a clean F-16 which is no slouch in a dog-fight either.

    And counter stealth technologies are going to likely come from Ground Based Radars and SAM systems,

    At the moment the F-22A may not have the passive detection capabilities of a Rafale, but these electronic stuff can be added to the F 22 in an MLU. The T 50 is going to have next-gen IRST and passive detection features built in.

    To conclude one can say that the 4.5 generation fighters are naturally disadvantaged against a fifth gen and currently hold an edge over the only operational fifth gen interms of situational awareness and electronics, nothing that can’t be negated through an upgrade to its electronics.

    When it comes to Japan you have to realize that she will need an aircraft that is notably superior than that of PLAAF, because she cannot match PLAAF for numbers.

    The Typhoon may be 10-15% better than the latest PLAAF flankers but that may not be enough. Ideally she should have something like the F-22 and may lean towards F-35 as the next best option.

    She has territorial disputes with Russia as well and both China and Russia will be fielding fifth generation fighters in the near future.

    Yes they could all be wrong ofcourse. But what I think is that the Europeans understand that they are unlikely to face the likes of Russia or China or any airforce fielding advanced types unless as a part of NATO/Coalition effort in which case the Americans will be there with the cavalry. Hence they may find the Rafale/Typhoon/Gripen suitable for their needs for the next 30 years or so.

    In business the greatest indication that you have a successful product is when the rival/competiton starts copying you. This is true from the ipod to the Raptor.

    All I am saying is the Russians and the Chinese had they believed their threats would be countered by existing fourth gen technology with sensor fusion, they would have gone that route. It would have been much easier for them to develop a “fifth” generation fighter with external stores and sensor fusion than to go the T-50, J-xx route. I think they went ahead because they figured that the future belonged to shaped stealth. I think its for the same reason that some members of the Eurofighter consortium are also partners in the JSF programme.

    Now the T 50 looks a platform that would match the F-22 in stealth, sans the engine nozzles which it will get with uprated engines.

    And note that in all drawings of J-xx whether real or fanboy art it is a stealthy design. The same with the AMCA of India. The Japanese fifth gen…all have internal stores and shaped stealth..

    Yes i do. But I do not think a 4++ generation fighter can negate the Raptor’s advantage of stealth. Passive detection and long range IR shots are rather fanciful in a real combat situation they may only buy the 4++ gens enough time to make a get away.

    The Raptors stealth advantage will only be negated by fighters which are stealthy like itself.

    As for those who argue that the Raptor and Typhoon/Rafale are different approaches to the same problem, well then tell me why Russia and China are not countering the Raptor with advanced fighters without shaped stealth of their own, because they realize like the Americans that Shaped Stealth with internal weapons carriage is the way to go and Jamming and Passive detection etc. can only take you so far.

    India test-fires nuclear-capable Agni-I missile

    BALASORE: India on Thursday test-fired an upgraded version of the nuclear-capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile Agni-I from a defence base off the east coast.

    The missile with better re-entry technology and manoeuvrability was fired by the armed forces from a mobile launcher at the launching complex – IV of the Integrated Test Range in Wheeler’s Island at about 10.10am.

    “The result of the test-firing was not immediately known. However, the flight was made for user’s trail and it has met all the mission objectives. The test was to reconfirm the technical parameters set for the user associated launch,” a defence official said.

    After a vertical lift-off from the launch pad at the ITR, the missile rose into the sky leaving behind a ribbon of smokes. Ground radars, telemetry stations and naval ships, positioned close to the intended impact point, monitored the course of the missile.

    Agni-I has a strike range of 700-900 kms. Compared to its longer-range cousins, its height is just 15 metres and diameter is one meter. It is powered by both solid and liquid propellants, which imparts it a speed of 2.5 km per second.

    According to defence sources, it can blast off from both road and rail mobile launchers. Weighing less but having the same thrust, the missile has added acceleration.

    Agni-1 was first test-fired on January 25, 2002. Its second and third tests were conducted on January 9, 2003 and July 4, 2004 respectively from the same launching site. Thursday’s test was its eighth test.

    Prior to the test, eight boats were engaged to patrol around the Wheeler Island and fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea. Heavy security arrangements were also made along the sea coast.

    The Director of Advanced System Laboratory (ASL) and project director of Agni missiles, Avinash Chander, and ITR director SP Dash were present along with the officials of Indian army and other defence scientists during the test.

    DRDO plans five missile tests

    BALASORE (ODISHA): In a step forward to attain the minimum credible nuclear deterrence, India’s defence scientists are going to show more fire power at the country’s best test facilities at Chandipur and Wheeler Island off the Odisha coast in the coming days.

    According to the sources at the integrated test range (ITR), the DRDO has planned to test-fire at least five sophisticated long range missiles within next two months. The launching complexes at both the places have been readied for the first ever synchronized test in the recent times.

    While on Thursday, an advanced version of the Agni-I missile has been scheduled to be fired, in December two missiles – BrahMos and Agni-II – will fly in the sky. In January scientists will fire the newly developed Agni-II + missile and an interceptor missile, which last time didn’t take off due to a technical snag in the target missile.

    “This is for the first time that altogether five missiles have been lined up to be test-fired within next two months. The lab authorization committee of the ministry of defence (MoD) has given necessary green signal for the proposed test-firings. Range integration has been completed. We all are hopeful of test launching the missiles successfully,” said a defence scientist.

    Originally designed to strike the target at a distance of 700 km, the Agni-I missile this time will be tested by the armed forces with better re-entry technology and an extended range.     Next month there will be tests of BrahMos and Agni-II. On September 5 last India created history by flight testing Brahmos cruise missile, for the first time in the world, at a supersonic speed in a steep-dive mode. The 8.4-meter long missile can hit a target at a distance up to 290 km. The missile can travel at thrice the speed of sound and carry a conventional warhead weighing 200 kg to 300 kg.

    “BrahMos has become the only supersonic cruise missile possessing this advanced capability in the world. After the scheduled test this version will be ready for induction,” said the scientist.

    Similarly, the two-stage solid-propelled Agni-II is one of the key weapon systems of the country’s nuclear deterrence doctrine and had been inducted into the armed forces. Having about 1.3-meter diameter, it is 21 metres tall and capable of carrying a payload of one tonne. It has strike range of nearly 2000 km. The missile, which had failed to deliver desired results consecutively twice last year, was successfully tested in May this year.

    “Meanwhile, we have developed Agni-II+ missile which is completely a new missile having a strike range between 2750 km and 3000 km. It has several advanced technologies in comparison to its previous missile. This missile, a part of the Agni series, will bridge the gap between its long-range missiles Agni-II (2000 km) and Agni-III (3500 km),” informed the scientist.

    In the final step, the DRDO will test the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile to shoot down an incoming “enemy missile” as part of its efforts to build a credible ballistic missile defence shield. Of the four interceptor missile tests so far, the first three were successful. The last one in March this year was a failure.

    2010-11-24 Boeing has responded to an Air Force / Ministry of Defence Request for Proposal (RFP) for 22 attack helicopters and has offered the Boeing AH-64 Apache Longbow attack helicopter platform for this requirement. The Indian Air Force has conducted field trials for the Apache Longbow helicopters, which offer a range of capabilities including lethal attack, peacekeeping, reconnaissance over land and sea.

    “We responded to the RFP for 22 attack helicopters for the Indian Air Force with our Apache Longbow helicopters and completed field trials this year. The Apache Longbow is the only available combat helicopter with a spectrum of capabilities for virtually any mission requirement. We believe it is uniquely suited to meet the commander’s needs – including reconnaissance, security, peacekeeping operations, and lethal attack — in both land and littoral environments — all without reconfiguration. The Apache is a versatile aircraft capable of meeting the needs of operators in both military and paramilitary markets.”

    The Boeing AH-64 Apache is a four-blade, twin-engine attack helicopter with tailwheel-type landing gear arrangement, and tandem cockpit for a crew of two. The Apache was developed as Model 77 by Hughes Helicopters for the United States Army’s Advanced Attack Helicopter program to replace the AH-1 Cobra. First flown on 30 September 1975, the AH-64 features a nose-mounted sensor suite for target acquisition and night vision systems.

    The U.S. Army is the primary operator of the AH-64, however it has also become the primary attack helicopter of several nations it has been exported to, including the United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, Greece and the Netherlands. U.S. AH-64s have served in conflicts in Panama, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Israel has made active use of the Apache in its military conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza Strip; while two coalition allies have deployed their AH-64s in Afghanistan and Iraq.

    Favouring self-reliance in military technologies and weapons production, Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma on Wednesday said that India [ Images ] should arrest the trend of importing arms.

    “If we aspire to become a strong nation and have the flexibility to choose our own courses of action to deal with internal and external challenges, we need to become self-reliant in critical national security requirements and technologies,” Verma said. He was inaugurating the Confederation of Indian Industry-sponsored NAVARMS, a two-day seminar on naval armament technologies in New Delhi [ Images ].

    Verma said India had met most of its security requirements over the last six decades as a “net importer” of military hardware. “Considering existing and anticipated orders for aircraft, ships and submarines, our imports may continue well into the foreseeable future, unless concrete steps are taken to arrest this trend. A significant component of the requirement is for upgradation of our existing fleet and inventory of armament and armament stores,” he said.

    Though its growing economy was “a great national asset” that made the world take notice of India’s potential to contribute at the global level, he said the difference between economic progress and strategic self-sufficiency has to be recognised.

    The Navy chief said India, having come this impressive distance over the last two decades in developing engineering, technological and industrial strengths, was ready to embark on more ambitious ventures in pursuit of self-reliance and indigenisation. “The field of developing armament and armament systems lends itself to this effort. Developing critical technologies and capabilities is vital to enhancing the nation’s strategic flexibility, and developing indigenous armament systems will not only give our armed forces a competitive edge, but also strengthen the nation economically and industrially,” he added.

    Noting that India was gradually opening the defence industry to private players, Verma said the country should endeavour to make armament production vastly more indigenous and called for increasing ordnance factories’ and defence public sector units’ procurement of assemblies and sub-assemblies from private sector from the current Rs 3,100 crore.
    He said the Navy followed a three-pronged action plan to enhance self-reliance in naval armament — joint design and development with Defence Research and Development Organisation, transfer of technology to ordnance factories and defence public sector undertakings from foreign manufacturers, and supporting private industry in their research and development efforts and from purchases.
