Indian rocket to launch five satellites July 12
India’s advanced, high-resolution remote-sensing satellite Cartosat-2B would be launched July 12 at 9.23 am from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh, giving a boost to the country’s infrastructure and urban planning.
The Indian Space and Research Organisation’s (ISRO) rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will carry into space the 690 kg Cartosat 2B and an Algerian satellite, Alsat (117 kg).
The rocket will blast off carrying also three nano satellites – NLS 6.1 and NLS 6.2 from Canada and Switzerland, and StudSat developed by students of engineering colleges in Bangalore and Hyderabad.
“The launch is fixed for July 12 at 9.23 a.m. The rocket will carry five satellites,” SSathish, director (Publications and Public Relations) told IANS from Bangalore over phone.
The rocket’s main cargo Cartosat-2B is a remote sensing satellite carrying a sophisticated panchromatic camera on board to photograph specific spots closely. The pictures are useful for cartographic applications such as mapping, land information and geographical information system.
Cartosat 2B will join the other two cartography satellites Cartosat 2 and 2A launched earlier. With three satellites ISRO’s satellites can cover the country effectively.
ISRO has been carrying out multiple launches for several years and in 2008 it set a world record launching 10 satellites at one go.
Originally scheduled for launch May 9, ISRO decided to postpone the launch as it found “a marginal drop in the pressure in the second stage of the vehicle during mandatory checks”.
Though the pressure drop was marginal, ISRO wanted to be sure as it does not want to risk a failure since PSLV is a major revenue earner, carrying satellites for others for a fee.
The 44 metre tall PSLV is a four stage (engine) rocket powered by solid and liquid propellants alternatively.
The first and third stages are fired by solid propellant and the second and fourth stages are fired by liquid propellant.
At that time the rocket was almost ready except for the loading of the satellites that had arrived at the launch centre in Sriharikota around 80 km from here.
As the faulty valve was in an inaccessible area with the rocket stages having been fully assembled, the second stage had to be dismantled to take corrective action.
Even after the replacement of the faulty valve at Sriharikota the problem continued to persist and ISRO sent the second stage (engine and other systems) to Liquid Propulsion System Centre at Thiruvanthapuram in Kerala where it was originally assembled.
“The second stage was refurbished and sent back to Sriharikota,” Satish said.
Air force to get back choppers on UN duty
In yet another step that appears aimed at curbing the Maoists, the Indian Air Force has redoubled its effort to get back 18 multi-utility helicopters currently deployed in United Nations missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Security forces indicated more IAF helicopters could be pressed into service in Maoist dominated areas.
Following the latest Naxal massacre of 27 CRPF men in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpuri district, the home ministry and state government are also taking fresh stock of the deployment pattern of security forces in the region.
So anxious is the IAF to get the helicopters back, that, sources said, if the UN is unwilling to relinquish them right away, India may use an emergency clause in its contract with the UN that allows it to unilaterally take back the MI-17 choppers, after giving a 45-day notice.
The defence ministry has already requested the ministry of external affairs last month not to renew its commitment on the helicopters with the UN.
IAF sources said they expect the first set of helicopters to be released between July and September. But there are some that are committed to various UN operations in the DRC till mid-2011, for which the emergency clause may be used.
While there are demands from several sections of the defence establishment for the helicopters, anti Maoist operations will get priority, the sources added.
Even though the army has not yet been inducted directly into the war against the Maoists, the helicopters can perform many supplementary functions.
A larger number of choppers would enable the government to maintain the supply chain for the personnel in camps located deep in the jungles, without having to drive through Naxal-infested areas.
“In such high risk areas, the idea is to reduce exposure to the Maoists,” an official said.
A formal decision on the helicopters will be announced after the Cabinet Committee on Security takes a decision on the home ministry’s revised anti-Naxal strategy at its next meeting. Currently the nine Naxal infested states have only six helicopters between them.
As for redeployment, a ministry official said, decisions had been taken.
“About 10-12 camps in Chhattisgarh will be affected,” he said. The idea was to reduce the distances between camps to form a security grid and strengthen camps.
Why don’t they just scrap the tender and buy American ? Thats what they want to do anyway.

I don’t know if this thread comes under the scope of historic aviation, if you look at that section most of the discussion is around aircraft up to WW2 and secondly many countries actually do operate planes that should be in musuems.
I’m not in favour of the Tejas getting an H-XX designation.
1) Unlike HF-24 Marut, this time HAL is NOT the lead designer (though even Marut was actually designed by Kurt Tank). The lead designer is ADA, while HAL is simply the manufacturer.
2) The official (and supposedly final) christening of the Tejas was already done by former PM AB Vajpayee. The alphanumeric LCA KH-2001 was done away with, though prototypes continued to be named in honour of Kota Harinarayana. So why should alphanumeric HF-XX be re-introduced ?
3) “Hindustan” is an Urdu/Persian word. I have nothing against it per se, as it denotes India as “Land of Hindus”. But since our indigenous weapons hardware is denoted in Sanskrit, the practice must remain.
4) None of our other hardware like Arjun, Agni, Dhruv, Arihant, Nag, Akash are alphanumeric. Why then go alphanumeric for this ?
5) The HF-XX designation is “jinxed” or “cursed”. We all know what happened to Marut. The HF-24 Marut, that is.
6) There must be some semblance of a difference between us and Pakistan-China. Lets not join the league of Fighter China – 1 (eerily similar to Hindustan Fighter – X).

Govt orders radar to track movement in thick forests
Up against the daunting task of tracking Maoists in dense forests with no suitable technology available in the global market, the government has directed the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop a foliage-penetration radar that can track movements, camps and even landmines located under thick vegetation.
With radars and technology demonstrators from across the globe failing several rounds of trials, DRDO is working on a three-month deadline to acquire its first technology demonstrator radar from a European firm that would be co-developed and tweaked for Indian conditions. The radar would be fitted on board an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and will undergo significant software upgrades to be able to track down movements in thick jungles.
Sources said the first CARABAS ground imaging system, developed by Swedish firm Saab, would be delivered within the next three months and engineers from the two countries will work together to integrate it on board the Indian helicopter.
Indian scientists, sources said, would work on tweaking the radar that is currently being operated from fixed-wing aircraft by Sweden. A DRDO team will be visiting testing facilities in Sweden in August to observe the technology in action and carry out integration tests on the system.
The move comes after several radars and systems, demonstrated to Indian authorities for ground imaging in densely forested areas in recent months, failed to cut the grade. Indian authorities have tested British, Israeli and American systems in the past few months but results have been discouraging.

The Helicopter Academy to Train by Simulation of Flying (HATSOFF), the joint venture owned equally by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and CAE, today announced that its Bell 412 full-mission simulator has been certified to Level D, the highest qualification for flight simulators, by India’s Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Pentagon pitches for $10 billion Indian fighter jet deal
WASHINGTON: The Pentagon is making a strong pitch for US companies for the $10 billion deal for 126 fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force and future sales of the C-17 transport aircraft.
The US defence department, also known as Pentagon because of the shape of its building, does not view defence equipment sales as mere commercial transactions and looks at them as a growth area for the India-US partnership, a senior defence official said on Thursday.
“I am and will continue to be a strong advocate of US solutions for India’s defence needs,” Michele Flournoy, undersecretary of defence for policy, told members of the Asia Society. “US companies are eager to work with India as the Indian military continues to modernise.”
Noting two American companies, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, are among six competitors for India’s biggest fighter-jet purchase in 15 years, she said: “We are also looking at future sales of the C-17 aircraft as another example of near term defence sales.”
“We understand that India is making a strategic as well as an economic choice when it makes defence acquisitions,” she said. “Obviously, the commercial benefits of defence sales to the US economy can’t be denied.”“But from a [defence department] perspective, these sales are even more important in building a strategic partnership that will allow both our countries to cooperate more effectively to protect our mutual security interests in the future,” Flournoy said.
“Whether the scenario involves humanitarian assistance, counterterrorism cooperation or maritime security activities,” she continued, “having common equipment will allow more seamless cooperation.”India is seeking to build its own indigenous defence industry, and is looking for the best technologies to use in its defence sector, Flournoy said.
The United States is committed to providing India with top-of-the-line technology, and has backed up its commitment by approving the overwhelming majority of licenses requested last year, she said.
Flournoy noted defence secretary Robert M Gates has made export control reform a key priority, citing the streamlining and modernizing of the US export control system as a national security priority that affects the nation’s ability to build and sustain key partnerships.
India and the United States will explore ways to counter the spread of weapons of mass destruction through maritime cooperation, dialogue, and identifying new technologies to combat this threat, Flournoy said.
“We will look at ways in which, together, we can better secure the global commons by expanding our already robust cooperation in air, space, cyberspace and maritime initiatives.”
IAF readies evaluation reports of MMRCA fighters.
The Indian Air Force’s marathon attempt to secure a medium range multi-role combat aircraft, with which to replace a rapidly ageing fleet of Soviet-era MiG fighters, has crossed another milestone with technical evaluation reports from field trials of competing aircraft now being readied for consideration.
Reports quote defence ministry sources as saying that these evaluation reports, prepared after gruelling field trials of six competing fighters of different manufacturers, was ”virtually ready” now. The fighters in contention were tested by IAF pilots both in India and abroad under different weather conditions. While flight characteristics were tested in India, weapon systems were tested in home countries of different fighters.
The six competing fighter platforms are Boeing’s F/A-18 ‘Super Hornet, Lockheed Martin’s F-16 ‘Falcon’, the Saab Gripen, D’assault’s Rafale, the MiG-35 (Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation) and the Eurofighter Typhoon (a consortium of British, German, Spanish and Italian companies).
”IAF is likely to submit the exhaustive report by next week. Subsequently, a shortlist of the fighters which have done well in the field evaluation test and the staff evaluation will be made,” said a source.
The commercial bids submitted by the six manufacturers will be opened, examined and compared only after that.
For the first time ”life-cycle costs” will be taken into account by the Indian Air Force rather than opting for just the lowest bid.
Helicopter-mounted radar to tackle Naxal IEDs
India is deploying cutting-edge technology to defeat a simple insurgent weapon that J&K militants and Naxals are using to lethal effect: the Improvised Explosive Device, or IED. Swedish company Saab has offered to partner India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in fitting Saab’s CARABAS radar on India’s Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), which would allow the scanning of wide swathes of territory to detect IEDs well before they can be exploded.
Naxal IEDs — explosives that are detonated with a timer, or with signals from a mobile phone, to blow up jawans or vehicles — are blamed for over 60 per cent of all casualties caused by the group. In only the most recent example, on May 17, a Naxal IED, buried inside a metalled road, blew up a civilian bus in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, killing 36 people, including 12 Special Police Officers. Any movement of security forces in Naxal areas must be preceded by a painstaking manual search for IEDs. Many casualties have been caused during these search operations.
In the new system being evaluated, a Saab CARABAS radar, fitted in a Dhruv helicopter, does an aerial scan of the area in which security forces will be operating. The CARABAS radar is specially designed to detect metallic components of an IED, even when it is buried 5-6 metres below the ground. A computer quickly compares the image of each flight with the images of the previous flight over that area; any new metallic objects are highlighted, and their exact location mapped. Armed with that information, a bomb disposal team is sent to defuse the IED harmlessly.
Best of all, the exceptionally low frequency waves from the CARABAS radar ignore vegetation, reflecting only off man-made objects. This is especially useful in jungle terrain, where the dense foliage provides both visual and electro-magnetic cover. Naxal IED tactics involve burying IEDs several feet deep, sometimes under tarmac roads; such a system would detect even the deep-buried IEDs, which conventional, hand-held scanners, and even sniffer dogs, often cannot pick up.
“We have provided a radar at the request of the DRDO,” says Inderjit Sial, the India head of Saab International India AB. “The DRDO will integrate it on the Dhruv ALH and then evaluation trials will be conducted. There is also a lighter version of the radar which can be flown on a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).”
The helicopter-mounted CARABAS radar weighs about 150 kg. The smaller version of the radar, which has been developed for UAVs, weighs just 50 kg.
Saab believes this surveillance platform has a very high potential in India. The company has indicated that, if India chooses to deploy the CARABAS/Dhruv platform, Saab would set up its global manufacturing hub for the radar in India.
The DRDO is carefully evaluating Saab’s offer. Confirming to Business Standard that it is evaluating a foreign foliage penetration radar, the spokesperson stated, “We are seeking foreign collaboration in this field. Talks are actively on… but we have not yet made a final decision.”
A key challenge the DRDO faces in integrating the CARABAS low-frequency radar on a UAV, or on the Dhruv helicopter, is the unusual shape and large
size of the radar antennae, which look like two long poles. A place on the flying platform will have to be found for these antennae.
With regards to the LUH, after all this years they cannot still design a transmission themselves. Well pay up or pull out lets buy foriegn.
you’re not getting the point. you can do with a steam catapult, not an EMALS. IAC2 need not have an EMALS catapult, a steam catapult will do for the F-35C.
Steam catapults are more complex and obsolete. Indian interest on EMALS was again confirmed my Admiral Verma. I doubt the IAC 2 which is coming in 2020+ will have Steam Catapults.
India’s AEW&C Programme Gets Ready For Platform Flight Tests
Have just received a detailed briefing on the test phase of India’s AEW&C programme. In a few months, the first of three modified EMB-145 platforms will begin a routine of flight tests for basic performance and handling. This preliminary testing will be carried out in Brazil by Embraer and a team from the Indian Air Force’s Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in association with Brazil’s Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil and India’s CEMILAC.
The first flight test aircraft, which is set to make its first flight later this year, will be integrated with a Dorsal Unit (DoU) containing dummy electronics, ECS, IFR, auxiliary power units, internal fuel tanks, SATCOMs and antennae. India’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) — the laboratory spearheading the programme — has already supplied Embraer with a dorsal unit (with dummy electronics) and a Ku-band SATCOM dome, while the Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), CABS and the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) have shipped in antennae for ESM, CSM and U/VHF.
While the EMB-145 with the configuration above will undergo flight tests in Brazil, the configuration for ferry to India in August 2011 will be the aircraft with only the dorsal pylon (minus the unit), ECS, IFR, APUs and internal fuel tanks.
Once the first aircraft reaches India, it will undergo a rigorous flight testing schedule by CABS, ASTE and CEMILAC in association with Embraer. After a few flights in India, the aircraft will be integrated with a dorsal unit with real electronics and other mission system equipment, including operator workstations (five), avionics racks, rest crew seating, seats and cabling.
On June 23, EADS Defence & Security announced that it had been awarded a
contract to supply consultancy services to CABS for developing the AEW&C’s system architecture with particular regard to certification and mission equipment optimisation.
Bharat Dynamics to establish two missile complexes
Hyderabad: Public-sector defence production unit Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) will set up two complexes for manufacturing missile systems in Andhra Pradesh at a cost of Rs 1,400 crore.
The proposed facilities are likely to come up at Ibrahimpatnam (500 acres) on the outskirts of Hyderabad and at the Lepakshi Knowledge Hub (600 acres) in Anantapur district, BDL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Khetarpal said.
BDL CMD and Director (Technical) S N Mantha met Chief Minister K Rosaiah to brief him about their expansion plans and request the state government to allocate land for the proposed units.
“We are happy to note that BDL has decided to set up two new missile manufacturing facilities in Andhra Pradesh. The required land will be made available to them,” the Chief Minister announced while releasing the new Industrial Investment Promotion Policy here Thursday.
The two new units are expected provide about 3,500 jobs directly and another 3,000 jobs indirectly, the BDL officials told the Chief Minister.
The proposed facility in Anantapur district will also have an integrated township for the employees. BDL currently has two modern manufacturing complexes spread over 1300 acres at Kanchanbagh in Hyderabad and Bhanur in Medak district of AP.
It aims to achieve a sales turnover of Rs 1,500 crore in the 2010-11 financial year.
Missile defence system to be test fired in August: DRDO chief
NEW DELHI: The indigenously developed ballistic missile defence system will be test fired in August this year, a top defence official said today.
“Now the (ballistic missile defence system) test is going to be conducted in the month of August during which we will try to intercept a missile at altitudes of 15-20 kilometres,” DRDO chief V K Saraswat told reporters here.
The ballistic missile defence system is being developed by the premier Defence Research and Development Organisation to thwart an enemy missile attack.
Referring to the failed test of the system on March 15, he said, “The anti-missile system is a two-tiered system where you first launch the target missile and then you launch the hit missile. Since the target was not launched as planned, the anti ballistic missile system did not trigger.”
Saraswat said that the DRDO was taking precautions to prevent any failure in the August test.
“Whenever there is a deviation, we will always take precautions. This is part of our development process,” he said.
India plans to deploy the first phase of the missile shield by 2012 after completing a series of trials and evaluating its target range.
Two different missiles have been developed as part of the system for endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric interception of an incoming ballistic missiles.
Replying to a query on the Indo-Israeli joint venture to develop a medium range surface-to-air missile, the DRDO chief said, “More than 70 per cent of the content in the missile being developed with Israel would be indigenous.”
Noting that the programme was going ahead smoothly, Saraswat said that agencies such as the BDL, the BEL and the DRDO have been designated for the project.
