The President of the United States carries a certain amount of weight. His bargaining has not helped the case of the Super Hornet in India. Because of this the U.S Ambassador to India has resigned. I doubt he will want to do the same in Brazil for a much smaller order.

Also whenever Obama talks he is leaving things to doubt, he do not make sweeping statements like his predecessor did, he is not assertive enough etc. Bush literally won over GOI and Indian people with his visit Obama could not do the same.

The Rafale’s Electronic Attack capability includes bringing down websites among other things.

But if access to the ToT means they can make equal or better competitor aircraft, then if they buy Typhoon they will be able to make an even better competitor aircraft than if they buy Rafale. So really, that doesn’t work as a reason IMO. That said, ToT doesn’t give them the capability to make a competitor aircraft, it’s just some transfer of technology.

See Eurofighter consortium was just made to make one plane. So to them it matters far less if India for instance uses its technology to become a competitor in the Global Fighter Market. They have nothing to lose by ToT and possibly more to gain by that totally opposite in the case of Dassault.

Again offsets may be much easier for EADS compared to Dassault, the Dassault spokesperson admitted to as much. May be they won’t be making much profit to justify all these deals !

I like Rafale better as a plane but things don’t look good for it in MRCA IMO.

Well Dassault seems to have this inward looking policy like TooCool said, it is assured a certain number of orders and don’t have a competitor in the domestic market. So as long as France want to keep its military upgraded, Dassault will get orders, a bit like a privately owned HAL (not saying they have similar capability or anything).

So they may be considering if the deals are worth all the ToT, offsets etc, should they enable these players to make similar or better fighters that could affect them in future markets and so on. So in the end its not disastrous if Rafale do not win any deal. The company will survive.

I state again: the MiG-21 was not a particularly difficult plane to fly for the time.

The MIG 21 has served India well. But from what i have heard its not an easy jet to fly, especially for rookie pilots.

See some of the recent IAF MIG 21 accidents have been attributed to rookie pilot errors, because IAF trainer fleet is in such a mess.

I also remember watching a programme called Top 10 fighters of all time, the 21 came second I think, there was extensive interviews with this Romanian (I think) former MIG 21 pilot, who loved the plane but said it was not easy to fly at all.

I guess if the offer is like that its curtains for it in India as well.

Those who made it shall keep the name. India as per practice may give the fighter an Indian name when its in IAF service.
