EELightningWell since the UK build their own subs that have mostly British tech, (even the steel that they’re made of is a “British design”…So they say & so I’ve heard according to a source that I wouldn’t have thought it have something like that…) apart from the odd weapon etc or so, of which really isn’t important. EELightningThe USAF has WANTED to use it in Iraq & Afghanistan but Gates continues to deny its request to do so (for the very simple reason that he knows full well that it WOULD prove itself & he could no longer get away with faulting it for not be useful in the current conflict).
I’d just like to comment that part: Why would the USAF would want to send the F-22 to Afghanistan? To be fair its not really needed there & theres nothing it can’t do better than the like of F15’s, F16’s, Harriers, Tornados, Rafales, A-10’s, Mirages etc, well maybe apart from speed but whoopy-doo. And to be honest its far from the greatest close air support asset there is at the moment and not to mention maintaining it etc and keeping a few in the US for its role that it was designed to do in the first place.
And I really don’t believe that Gates would not want to send it to Afghanistan just because it’d prove him wrong…I mean…C’mon, its more likely to prove him right if you think reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally hard about it…

It’d also be interesting whats going to happen with F-35B, personally I’d think I’d have to cancel it but sadly I think not, but probably be cut in numbers, again.

These sort of exercises are always meant for someone to be “killed/shotdown” all the time, its about training pilots, especially new ones whom of which were supposedly flying the RAF Typhoons-I don’t know the full details about that or anything else for that matter, and of course, getting to know how their airplanes work etc etc etc etc etc so on & what not!
If the air forces taking part showed up with their bestest pilots and flew their aircraft to there full potential, then you can brag & boast about how your favourite airplane done! But since these exercises were not flown like that, then everyones opinion, including mine, is at best speculation and to a lot of fan-boys, (I see at least two of you are already here :rolleyes:) is at best, trolling!

If i have a choice to load a B-2 with Durandal and send it in at 200 feet, or send it at 30k feet 40+ miles away with 200 SDB or JDAMS which path do I take. The fact that the durandal is absent from the U.S. inventory is telling.
The British had less options than today. Just like to point out on the low level thing; Its not a bad thing at all, period! During the Gulf War, the only way to destroy or hamper the Iraqi runways effectively was with the JP233 anti-runway munition(s), that was the only weapon that was capable to do the job and it was in the hands of the RAF to do so and it required it to be at low level only, that was the only sensible option at that time and it worked, yes the RAF lost a few aircraft and aircrew because of it, but it was the only way it could be done, quickly, and the RAF were the only ones that could make it happen. It could have been done at medium levels using LGB’s but it wouldn’t have been as effective and the craters the bombs made in the runways would’ve been easy for the Iraqis to mend. And I’d also like to add; The RAF would’ve lost a whole lot less aircraft and aircrew, if any, if the ALARM had been in service that little sooner so other Tornado’s could take out the airfields defence. The RAF Tornados that were tasked with taking out the runways flew into those Iraqi airfields with huge balls made out of solid brass knowing they had no effective means of taking out the airfields defence and if that isn’t brave then I don’t know what the hell is! So I think you should show a little more respect & put a little more thought into what those brave crew had to do! I’d like to know how many other air forces would’ve stood up and offered to do that job. Not many I doubt.

AZll this bad news is realted to finances and delay, there are no such negative comments on capability yet.
Hence, there is still a chance that the f-35 is the wonderfull system that is needed, today we only know that we will have to wait longer and probably pay more for it
When one knocks sources that have a reputation of having reliable, non-bias, good first hand knowledge etc and calls their opinions-and other members for that matter, too-; “BS”, saying they’re WRONG and I’m right because I AM even without linking us to a reliable source saying he is so and having a negative, stinking attitude towards other peoples opinions just because they don’t match his rather than having a good mannered discussion about it…Then what kind of replies do you’d expect some people would have towards him? At least with the Harrier’s engine it made use of everything it had, all the time. As far as design is concerned, the Harrier’s engine is a far better design, more practical, IMO.
