Here we agree completely. The China I know is nothing but a huge manufacturing complex without signs of own invention.. Certainly there are exceptions but in my sector of work, we have found 99% of our products copied (often 1:1) but so far we have not found a single thing that was worth copying back. If you expect that this earns my respect, then you’re wrong.
A perfect example is the motoring industry. China produce so many cars, albeit they’re ripped off from European and Japanese designs that were discontinued a long time ago, there’s a reason why Chinese cars aren’t exported to other countries in large quantities or have very little interest, and Europe’s car manufacturers biggest market is China, it’s because China’s own cars are cr*p!
The same is going the same way with musical instruments. There are some, somewhat dodgy, Chinese manufacturers that are “producing designs” that are ripped off from, say for example, a Gibson Les Paul. They look identical, cost around £150, compared to £1,500+ for a Les Paul Standard, but are utter rubbish. As a Musician/Guitar Technician I’d appreciate them if they went with a different shape of their own… but they haven’t, there’s no innovation, no style, no character, no feeling… Just easy money.
