Lots of comments here on the PAK-FA. Thing is, the PAK-FA is still very much an unknown quantity, as the final/proposed design has yet to even be submitted. Difficult to compare the Typhoon of now, or in ten years, with a jet that doesn’t yet exist.

On the subject, why did the US switch from sail-mounted planes to bow mounted planes on the Improved LA class SSNs?

…starring Bill Paxton 😀 Has anyone else seen this movie? I caught it on cable here last night, it was pretty good. And yes, it is the story of the Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow interceptor from the 1950’s.

Never heard of it SOC. Will have to watch out for it.. 🙂

Depends on what you mean by obsolete. Obsolete as in age of the design? Or in it’s inability to compete with what is on the horizon in say the next decade?

If you mean design then there are a lot of obsolete aircraft entering service now, or soon. If you in mean capability, I would say no again. Fully developed with all it’s potential, I think the Typhoon will be a viable fighter in the European, if not global context, for many years to come.

I am thinking about starting a collection of diecast planes, what brands would one suggest are the better ones to look out for?

This alone will be a shocking revelation to some people 🙂

Then they would need to check their history books. The USAF has known of the potential and capability of Russian jets in the air since the Korean war. If flown by decent crews they can indeed be tough opponents as both sides would be flying tactics that maximise their own platform’s advantages over their opponents.

Looks like a cross between the Me-110 and a Mosquito. How far did these Yaks go in development?

    Scooter,

I personally would love to see the F-35C downunder, but I think we will opt for the F-35A as the bulk of the buy and perhaps, and I say perhaps, a small batch of F-35Bs too. We are currently looking at large LHD type vessels for the Navy, and the RAAF has expressed interest in the STOVL F-35B as well. 2 and 2 equals………… 😉

Have to agree with Steve here on the blockade Op. If a conflict with China was underway, stopping and sinking ships like tankers on their way to China (or from) would have to help in bringing them to the negotiating table, and one would hope a swift end to the fighting for everyone’s sake. Sea denial is something that the PLAN is currently unable to challenge beyond it’s own waters. The Chinese would be in an untenable position, and would either have to reconsider the fight, or take it the next level in response.

I doubt you would find an SSN operating in the littorals, or within the EEZ of the Chinese mainland. In fact they would not have to. A blockade of shipping to and from China could be effected from well outside Chinese waters. For this, the SSN is perfect, mainly due to it’s endurance.

-Most of the acting performances were actually better than I expected. No real A-list stars, but you know what? Alien and Aliens did just fine without ’em as well (discountign Sigourney in the second one, of course).

One nitpick if I may SOC. Let’s not forget Michael Biehn. He was in James Cameron’s Terminator of 1984, and then in Aliens of 1986. Not as big as Weaver sure, but he was surely recognised by then.

Nice review BTW, and I look forward to seeing it next month. 🙂

    The VLS heavyweights……

The VLS Ticonderoga-class CG: 122 armed cells

The Arleigh Burke-class DDG: 96 armed cells

The Russian CGN Petr Velikiy: 20+12+128 = 160

The Russian Slava-class CG: 64 cells

The Japanese KONGO class DDG: 96 armed cells

So with that, the new Korean KDX-3 with its 80+48 is doing pretty well!!

    Have I missed any heavyweights?

Well……..Its only a suggestion, but the idea suddenly come to mind.

Like a few others the Typhoon was looked at, but the RAAF have pretty much put all their chips in the F-35 bag it would seem. 🙂

Why have the Russians gone with some seemingly harmless names for their weapons? The Americans often use something pertaining to deadly instruments/animals or predator-type names for their missiles such as Sidewinder, Hawk, Hellfire, Stinger, Harpoon, Pheonix. etc.
