However the launch of Volume 1 may again get slightly delayed and IAPR vol 12 onwards may be a better bet as they are looking to put in a 3 or 4 part series on Russian Aviation

While I look forward to reading the multi-part IAPR analysis I can’t help but feel that AIRtime publishing are simply filling space with it. They are working on the Russian Aviation directory at the same time, which to me would have to mean VERY similar, or even the SAME material simply re-edited or re-written. Pity if it is. But it should be a good read none the less.

anyway anyone got better notes as to what that section for more Quieter propulsion system is in the Akula-II ?? ……

Most western sources appear to believe this extension is further noise-dampening measures that have been applied to the engineering/reactor area. The extension is aft of the sail.

You think? I have taken it in to account and I know that they still need another one or two frames for training.

The RAN could share their own with the Kiwis…. Yeah…right!!
    :p

Why would an Akula need an AIP?

    I think Blackcat is confused.

No. Knowing Japan, they would rather build one of their own first.

That might be the case, but unless they have something in the works fairly soon – or better, now – I seriously doubt they will be able to field a working home grown 5th generation type to start replacing the F-15 fleet by 2020. They might not have much choice but to co-develop something, again.

I was reading the 1983 edition of Soviet Military Power the other day…good fun to read it, and compare their speculations about the future with what really happened.

I was just wondering what actually happened to their ships. I know India bought the carrier, and that they have scrapped whole lot of them.
But the newer classes like Udaloy and Sovremenny…not to mention the Kirov…where are they, are they still in use? And does anyone consider them to be capable combatants this days?

    Just wondering..

    A very brief answer……

A small-to-moderate portion of the OLD Soviet fleet is still in service although largely inactive, nuclear-powered submarines in particular. On the KIROVs, at least 3 are still in service but again only one is truely active. The UDALOY and UDALOY II class DDGs are still there and active, although probably not the entire list, same with the SOVREMENNY class. In fact I have not heard much at all about Russian SOVREMENNY class DDGs going anywhere lately, whereas two UDALOYs were sent to the IFR in India last year. Also, the Russians still have at least one SLAVA class CG active and it visited Japan I think also last year, or a year before, I am not sure.

There are others, but I would have to dive into a current fleet list and don’t have the time, but I think someone else might…

I would personally consider them capable even today in the roles they were designed for.

You know..US’s next Gen AC…any thoughts guys?? there must be something deep inside..somewhere in a drawer of Pentagon…bah…anyway..is it possible given current state of Technology (offcourse only applies to US of A :P) and considering JSF will be doing the honours of landing and take-off?

Some of the CVNX concepts have been pretty stealthy, in that they have had their design modified to reduce their radar cross section (RCS). They are still large and perfectly visible, but in a stealthier configuration would be harder to detect on radar at long ranges, making iit harder for radar-guided weapons too.

Speaking of the F-15s of the JASDF, does anyone have pics of any of them with Sparrows fitted? I have never been able to find any.

I can’t see the whole issue of that Asia-scare anyway.

Problem is Arthur, that some over-rated so called defence analysts down here tend to exaggerate the threat to try and make a case for the ADF to buy certain big ticket defence equipment. Maybe they are trying to compensate for the the size of their own………….equipment. I think you can throw Carlo Kopp into that zoo with Irwin when the time comes.
