no it aint gonna have a ramjet….its gonna be conventional but improved motor…the ramjet is going to be later..as i said the ramjet engine contract specifically for a2a missiles has been given out to aerojet….that would be later perhaps 2012-2015 timeframe.
Is the AIM-120D the gel-fuelled AMRAAM everyone has been talking about?
Bugger it Jonesy got in before me! And yes the chopper was a BIG clue. 🙂
Pretty sure I got this one right this time! 🙂
This one is ‘IX 514’, an Auxiliary helicopter training craft of the USN.
BTW, the helo in your pic looks like a Kiowa scout, with a mast mounted sight.
Another pic…
Sorry Glenn et al the ‘current’ Almirante Grau isn’t the Mod. Fiji-Class you’ve illustrated. That vessel carried the name prior to the introduction of the two former Dutch cruisers of the Eendracht-class in 1973.
Details at: http://leden.tref.nl/~jviss000/Eendracht.htm
Right you are Jonesy and others! Looking at the picture CLOSELY this time, and the difference in the gun turrets is obvious. Blimey, thats what you get for jumping the gun…
😮
Forgot to mention. Love the toilets in the B777, the biggest I have seen! You can actually walk around in there. 🙂
In this thread I hope for people to ask what’s happening with Ships, programs, anything of a naval nature. And to kick it off I’m going to ask…
What’s happening with the two Argentine Navy Type 42 destroyers? They’ve been up for sale since the Falklands war and no one has bought them, are they active? Are they rusting hulks? What’s happening with them?
They are no longer for sale Ja. D2 Santisima Trinidad, has apparently been cannabilized for spares to support D1 Hercules, which appears to still be active.
The AIM-154 is employed in a lofted shot as well, which is another reason why its able to reach out and touch non-manouvering bombers at well beyond 100km. For the AIM-120D to have a further 50% increase in range it would surely have to employ a ramjet IMO. Or, a very special long burning fuel.
They canceled it about 18 months ago, what you are looking at is the new program but old name, if you look at the specs of the requirement you’ll see the difference!
Ja, the original DD-21 program name was shelved in favour of the new DD(X) family. The DD(X) is still very much alive. It is the same program, but with a new name. The DD(X) program, as it is currently.
As i recalled from reading Janes warship reconigition guide a few years back (lost the damm book!), she is a ex-Royal Netherlands Navy’s De Ruyter class cruiser.
What are you talking about? Which ship?
I heard this on the news, any idea what the problem might have been?
When I was about 9 or 10 seeing A-4 Skyhawks at a local air show in New Zealand. Then, at the Imperial War Museum in Canberra, seeing a real Lancaster and a Spitfire up close for the first time, and I think a WW1 biplane, possibly a Camel I think. More recently in South Korea, at the big War Museum in Seoul, seeing a real B-52D parked outside the main building on a very beautiful day! Now that was good! 🙂
Point air defence wth IR AAMs and gun pod(s).
But then you aussies have been expending a lot of effort and giving up a lot of credibility locally in your effort to suck up to uncle sam… would it make sense to just turn your back on that?
Consdering the RAN is looking at the IZAR Strategic Projection Ship (SPS) as an option for a future amphibious requirement, the Spanish would be mad not to try and do a joint-deal for the two RAN requirements, AAW DDGs, and the SPS. If this happens, then you can bet the savings in many millions would make it hard for the RAN to ignore, and therefore press hard to get it sealed, despite whatever pro-US stance our little Johnny Howard might have.
What type of equipment does DJ plan on using from Australia to the U.S., a 73G with stops in Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii en route?
Exactly! They would need to be looking at something like a B777 at least I think. I have heard nothing on the news about this, but the jump, if it happens, would not totally surprise me as they now compete on the Trans-Tasman market with Pacific Blue to NZ. They have talked about Pacific expansion too.
A TWIN tailed F-5! Cool! I wonder…did the Americans ever look at that? No even the F-20 Tigershark incarnation had it. Does it really improve the performance of a small type like the F-5? Or is this just an experimental type?
