Many, many thanks for the information, great to get news on it from an official source. A Vimy coming in at Brooklands again would be quite something to see! Here’s hoping it happens.
DongleUK,
The answer to Your question supplied by a museum spokesman:
“There is provision for a grass airstrip at Brooklands on land now owned by Mercedes-Benz World and this is intended purely for limited use by Brooklands Museum. Although not yet fully prepared and ready for use, our Vimy pilots have already recce’d it on the ground and plan to carry out some trial approaches/landings with a suitable light aircraft in the near future to determine work required to enable the Vimy to be flown in there later this year. The next obvious questions will be how can the aeroplane then be moved across the river Wey onto the museum site and where will it be housed. Both of these tasks are achievable and their planning will begin in earnest after the Alcock & Brown 90th Anniversary”.
Hope that helps,
Cheers
For it to be attempted murder you would have to prove that there was clear intent to kill someone. Putting an obstacle in the path of something doesn’t imply a clear intent to kill .
Well that might be the case with some vehicles, but surely if you’re putting something substantial in the path of an aircraft there is every likelyhood that you could end up bringing it down and killing someone.
About five years ago now I was in a car that my brother was driving, going down an unlit main road in Baldock, Herts when we spotted a metal bollard that some tw*t had stood up in the middle of the road. Thankfully we got down to about 20mph before we hit it, which was bad enough, but someone else might have hit it at full tilt and been killed. To my mind it was pretty close to attempted murder, to do something similar to an aircraft surely crosses the line.
The Portuguese Air Force Museum have a Mk.IIc on display with the serial RV-J-591. This is possibly a replica.
The Hurri in the PAF Museum is indeed a replica, which was placed on display in the mid 90’s. All of the genuine Portugese Hurricanes were scrapped.
Have to agree with Bruce, it seems little short of attempted murder. As for the duty pilot idea, there doesn’t seem to be any info on how long the poles were up for. Perhaps the guy puts them up only when he sees an aircraft about to take off?
Out of interest, when did NF389 last fly?
On a related note, does anyone know how plans are progressing for a grass strip at Brooklands? Last I heard a couple of years ago the museum was to get one as part of the redevelopment of the old airfield site.
If this is still the plan, then is there a chance the Vimy might be operated from it at some future point? I only ask as the statement says the Vimy is to be kept ‘live’.
I think the forum hits a new level of knowledgability when forumites start recognising the squadron dogs! 🙂
I wonder if it’ll be at the big display at Duxford whose name escapes me at the moment??
I don’t know about N56SF, but according to other forums the other French example, F-AZXL, is booked for Legends.
Intriguingly, the TFC blogspot refers to WG655 as a guest aircraft for Legends ’09, so perhaps she’ll be moving on again after??
Great stuff Stuart! I’m a tad confused as to where and when this will be available to the public from. Will it be a part of an update package? A free download?
Amazing model Steve, commiserations on the outcome of the first flight. Top marks to the pilot for containing the situation, she could easily be matchwood otherwise! Here’s to a swift return to the skies!
There was also a Fairey factory on the old Heston aerodrome site, “FAIREY” could be seen on the factory roofs up to a couple of years ago. The two large buildings immediately to the left of Aerodrome Way were part of the complex.
For some reason I’m having trouble pasting the Google Maps location. Go to Google Maps and type in “Aerodrome Way TW5”.
A number of Hurricanes were built at Brooklands/Weybridge pre-war (and into the war years?), so perhaps the replica Hurri will be set dressing for a pre-war/early war Weybridge scene?
Great to see, congratulations to all at PPS. I wonder if the French scheme will be retained?
