I photographed it in the same position some years ago – but that was on condition that you had to respect a prohibition on any publication of images taken in the storage area. Has that restriction now been lifted?

The Swift was XF114 and survives as G-SWIF in store. It was all black when in use at Cranfield still then with military serial. It went for use as an ground instructional airframe at the college to Connah’s Quay, before being sold and going to Hurn for return to flight, but that project was abandoned.

What was the reason for the RAF markings on G-BLZW? Film work?
Yes. IIRC it appeared statically in: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082351/

What an amazing disregard of its historic value if true. Maybe I should start a rumour that there is a Spitfire buried there too – it would soon be excavated.

I too photographed 44-90438 when it passed through Duxford. Interesting that in the view of it above you can see the long lost fin of the Hermes in the background. Was that item accidentally scrapped or is it still lurking somewhere on site waiting to be reunited with the fuselage?

Can you give me some details about this Anson in Texas? I am looking for one to acquire.

I have checked with my friend Alf Jenks who is author of the superb work: “Aviation in Warwickshire Between the Wars”. The photo was not taken at Baginton, it was at Whitley.

The 1 1/2 Strutter in Hendon IS a Replica, it was built by Viv Bellamy and if I recall correct it only flew a couple of times before going into the musem.
I have a set of wing ribs (non flying)for one in the workshop if anyone wants one????
This is correct. I seem to recall that it was flown once at Lands End by Tony Harold. He used to fly some of Leisure Sport’s WW1 replicas in displays, but sadly died later in a crash at North Weald. I have happy memories of experiencing aerobatics with Tony as pilot in Tiger Moth and Chipmunk etc on a few occasions.

Try emailing the following email address for the airfield operator and hopefully they will pass on the relevant email address for the museum:

Nice to see a shot of G-ARJJ – I recall this aircraft when, for a year or two in the early 60s it was based at Coventry (Baginton). In those days it stood out from the crowd as a very state of the art machine.

The C-47 was withdrawn from use and stored at East Midlands, UK where I remember photographing it in the 1970s. It was scrapped there a few years later.
