    Yes, but I’ll give you a penny to the pound that the photo was taken pre 1939. Word has it that the Arden barn was “chink free” (can I say that in these PC days!), which may explain the lack of later photos!

    I have pictures taken there but they’re in store right now – just so you can get an idea of the status of the AL.1 when she was at Heavitree, have a look at GORDY’s pic that he published a long time back on this forum:

    Hi vulcan558,

    Love your monochromes plus the colour + b&w example – really atmospheric. I found the show excellent value, thoroughly entertaining and educational – the vehicle owners were most friendly & helpful and the opportunity for photography of the airshow far less obstructed than at most airfields.

    That model tank, and plastic troops (the last one) on that diorama look very realist, was someone close by smoking? 😉 😀 Only kidding. Great quality shots.

    Thanks Rob. If you think that was smoking – they were a bit over zealous with the re-enactment and the stubble caught well enough alight for the need to call in a fire engine to douse the flames once the troops and vehicles had left that field. The irony was that even the fire engine was a “Green Goddess” from the early 1950s and to increase the water available a farm tractor with bowser accompanied it!

    Possibly its first display there but not its first visit – it has attended at least one event as a visitor – albeit before it was painted in full WW11 colours.

    I agree about the spirited C-47 display – I saw it on Sat & Sun at Cosby (Victory Show) and was very impressed (see my thread for pic).

    Quite right Roger – PJRM could be PJR Moyes – he has written a number of books on aviation history.

    If i remember rightly there was some bits of gliders made for a film at the muckleburgh collection.

    There was certainly a yard adjacent to (but not part of) the Muckleburgh site that many years ago had some genuine Horsa fuselage sections stored. I have colour slides of those substantial remains including shots of the serials stencilled on the bulkheads. Those examples were definitely original and I’ve no idea what happened to them. Can’t access the pics as they’re stored but when I do find them next I’ll post.

    It is possible the collection itself separately / later obtained some parts off film replicas I wouldn’t know.

    …………………A few photographs are credited to have come from the PRJM Library. Unfortunately the article was written by the late Arthur Pearcy, whose archive [I understand] was split up.

    Does anyone know if the aforementioned PRJM Library still exists? Also, does anyone know what happened to Arthur Pearcy’s archive – which dealer bought the collection?

    I think you may mean PJRM Library which is Peter JR March.

    So far as Arthur’s photos go, certainly a large number of his prints were being sold by a dealer who had obtained them. I only ever saw that dealer at a Whitwick aerojumble event – don’t know his ID.

    Well we’ll have photo’s tomorrow folks, coz Im going looking. So to clear this up as it crashed before I was born, did it crash in Cherry Lane or did it crash elsewhere then moved to the playground afterwards? …………….. 😀 Bex

    In my previous post I mentioned that it crashed on the IoW – perhaps I should have made it clearer that it was already in a non-airworthy state when it went to Salfords. I didn’t however know when I saw it there that the Salfords site was a pleasure ground. All is now revealed.

    Can anyone identify the wreck of the Bristol Sycamore that was (if my memory serves me correctly) just inside the entrance gate of the Langley Green Adventure Playground, Crawley, West Sussex, in the late 1960s? Where did it come from and where did it go to?

    I well recall a Sycamore (if I remember correctly it was over-all light blue with a darker blue cheat line) lying in premises adjacent to the railway line that led to Gatwick. This was in about 1965/66 period and was located at Salfords. The machine was G-AMWH which I recall previously seeing in BEA service (when it sported a horrible overall red scheme) flying at Heathrow in 1962. The helicopter had crashed on landing 15.8.64 at Cowes on the IoW. I never knew why it was at Salfords but my notes from the time say it was later removed to a scrapyard. Could this be your machine? Did anyone take a picture of it when at Salfords – I was never able to do so from a moving train!
