    …the Spitfire is slightly more convoluted.

    The firewall, frame 5, is a freestanding assembly on which is hung, by bolts and rivets, the fuselage tube.

    The firewall on the Spitfire however although initially made in house was latterly, in some divisions, sub-contracted to the likes of Heston Aero Industries. It carries its own data plate (e.g HAI/6S/******) and also the fuselage assembly mod plates. The data plate for the fuselage complete however is on the RHS of the cockpit usually just under the datum longeron…and this is the construction number quoted in inspection records and delivery registers.

    Locally in batches, the RAF serials run more or less sequential with the cockpit construction numbers.

    Is this the same for the Sea Fury?, I guess that as it was post-war there is no need to sub-contract and this aeroplane was built under one roof the data plates could be attached to the firewall, if not, I believed what I was told ten years ago and I’m now talking tosh(again)………thanks Mark:(

    I was told once that the identity of a piston fighter rested with the engine firewall (and data plates) as it was what everything hung off. e.g. engine off the front and cockpit off the back, therefore is the firewall the heart of a rebuild?

    It’s only deceit if someone attempts to hide the facts, then try selling it on ebay and I haven’t seen that?

    I’m with Yak, I wouldn’t care if it had German crosses and Dornier markings on it, just love to see it fly.

    As a matter of interest what is the span of the Hurricane centre section? I would imagine it almost fits the category of wide load.

    I classed it as a wide load (it’s on the limit) it was escorted with a smaller vehicle and both were lit up like christmas trees and had correct signage. We were inspected by Police and cleared to proceed.

    It pays to have good gear to do the job.

    My Spitfire is well inside the limit but I will continue in the spirit of the ‘wide load’ category on the grounds that it is an ‘unusual load’ behind a Land rover.

    Awesome trailer who made it?:)

    I’ve a trailer hire company, thats the biggest I have, it’s only ever had aeroplanes on it, Spitfires, Hurricanes and a C150. When I bought it last December I never intended to put it on my fleet, it was built for my 2nd Spitfire etc. It has a 7m tilt bed with a electric winch and you need something understanding to tow it with (my Disco III is perfick) It really is a great trailer.
    Made by Bateson trailers, cost a tad over 5k new but, saw one on ebay similar size go for 3.6k.

    Ideal for your Spitfire Graham. You can lay your wings on the bed etc.

    If you buy one, you need to fit it with Sat/nav tracker before some pikey called Stuart ‘bounces off down the road with your shiny new trailer, that’s just what I need!’:diablo:

    Like I said earlier, has anyone been able to check Luftwaffe losses for the day? Perhaps Wick shot down three 109’s in error? Stranger things have happened.

    The next thing you guys will tell us was that Bader was shot down by his own side!!…..that will ruin a good film and someone….probably off this forum…….will end up making a documentry (and a million quid) and call it…….something like ‘who downed Douglas Bader’……..:rolleyes:

    Ah!

    Just for the hell of it, and so I can say it one more time….

    There were no Spitfires lost in that action.;)

    Tangmere 1940 There were no Spitfires lost that day, but this may help a little:

    Kev 35 RAF Fighter Command Losses by Norman L R Franks states that there were NO Spitfires lost on the 6th of November 1940. It does list the loss of four Hurricanes.

    Kev 35 The point is it doesn’t matter whether he claimed three Spitfires, thirty Spitfires or three hundred and three Spitfires. THE RAF LOST NO SPITFIRES ON THAT DATE. Where is the evidence? Show me the wreckage? Did he follow each one down and pinpoint their location?

    Tangmere 1940 Certainly, absolutely 100% there were NO Spitfires lost in this combat.

    Kev 35 I say again the RAF lost NO Spitfires on that date. As to your suggestion of cover up? I’ll leave you to your delusions.

    The trailer it’s sitting on was bespoke built for my new MkI spitfire, due for release 26th June.

    IIRC, it was a demonstration during a press publicity day at the Woomera rocket range to show how far the technology of flying a drone had advanced …but control was lost. Not an intentional crash, and no one was hurt.

    On looking again – did they try taking off with full flap ?

    Hope all goes well with the moves. Huirricanes always seem to be a lot bigger than a Spitfire. You must have a very lenient local council. Ours dont even like caravans or trailers outside peoples houses.

    Well, back safe, did it through the night, parked outside my place now till Tuesday…took photos. Towed better than expected! Wings and tail etc in another of my trailers. The tail gate has been lowered just now to fit rudder and the spinner fitted for photos.

    Local council are very good about my ‘hobby’ and I have no neighbours (well – Newquay Airport)

    I’m off to get some sleep!

    Got no idea, just supplying transporters and trailers etc. Will take camera and find out story tomorrow. will post saturday. Apparently the guys couldn’t fit it all on a 40ft curtainsider today.

    Sadly no, it’s being refurbed by Gateguards. However, I have a second Spitfire MkI being built by the same firm, ready in 3 weeks (much more trailer friendly) to be painted in BEF B&W underside.

    Something odd with port wingtip, it’s not sitting correctly, was this originally a clip wing and this was monstered on?

    How weird is that.
    Whilst reading this thread, received a phone call to trailer a Hurricane from Liverpool down to Cornwall tomorrow. Its the last replica from the BoB film (apparently) I guess I will drive up tomorrow and come back with Hurricane on Saturday……………give us a wave!!
