Sure! Just go to an airshow next summer and try π
You might find that 300mm on a 35mm camera isn’t always sufficient, but why not try an Old Warden show – there it’s definitely enough!
Before i was having to go 1/800 to 1/1000 sec to avoid slight movement blur, now i am confidently going down to 1/500.
Generally 1/500th is still a bit too fast for propeller aircraft. As a general rule I try to stick to a maximum of…
1/400th for two-bladed props
1/320th for multi-bladed props
1/250th for helicopters
The speed relates to the rotation speed of the prop/rotor and going higher than these speeds will make your props/rotors look rather motionless and takes the action out of the image.
Well sure it depends on your needs. But by simply looking through this forum I assume Mixtec is after airshow photography.
As for nightscenes, nothing could be better than digital as it allows you endless attempts with shutterspeed etc, without wasting any film.

Mind you these pictures were taken without the aid of a tripod. I simply held the camera tight against a fence for a few seconds at ISO 800. The hanager pic though is taken with the camera resting on the spoiler of my car at ISO 100 with a much longer exposure π
Considering the colour… again Digital provides unequalled opportunities to experiment with white balance and pictures can easily be adjusted in programs such as Photoshop – especially when shooting RAW. It’s all a matter of what you do and what you want – definitely not the capabilities.
The EOS 300D is aimed at the more serious amateur and is a really nice piece of kit for the price. Combined with a good lens (I am using rubbish lenses at the moment – still undecided what lens to buy) it can create professional quality pictures without a doubt.
I’ve read a number of pilot autobiographies and am currently reading “The Big Show” by Pierre Clostermann. It is simply a fantastic read and I can very highly recommend it!!!
For a view from the other side, try “I flew for the FΓΌhrer” by Heinz Knoke. Quite sober but fascinating.
What’s this “film” stuff you’re talking about? π
I’ve been using a digital SLR for a year and a bit now (6.3 MP Canon EOS 300D) and there’s no way I will ever go back to film. The ease of use, instant result, ability to edit and low cost per shot (I shoot hundreds of pics at a show and all it costs is the price of burning a DVD every now and then) far outweigh any possible benefits film might have.
Bit of fresh paint and she’s a looker π
Thanks a lot everyone π
I am using an EOS 300D with Canon EF-III 75-300mm F4.5/5.6 lens. The lens is a stand-in until I have decided what proper lens I will buy. My old 100-400 broke down some time ago and the 75-300 placeholder is quite poor for airshows.
And yes, the Spit was indeed landing (at supersonic speed so it would seem :D)
PS. Notice the gathering of flies(!) on the shadow side of the white fuselage stripe of the Mustang – visible as dots on the first photo. I guess they were happily waiting for the “ride” π
Thanks.
Looks like it’s gonna be the Canon 100-400 then I’ll buy… seen some very impressive results with that.
The light was getting a bit tricky by the time the spitfire went up.
No kidding π
Nice take off shot of the PT-22 π
The Spit is pretty decent too, considering the appaling light conditions! Mine were all blurry and blurrier (except one landing shot which came out OK).
Lovely shots!
Nice shots! Especially like the Mustang arrival. Nice and shiny π
The Spitfire was shot on ISO 1000!
I stubbornly stuck to ISO 200 which made me end up with 1/20th of a second shutterspeed. Very nasty, but not entirely without success though…
Absolutely stunning. Been wanting to go on such a Wales trip myself once, but I never know when to go. At least thanks to you I now know where! π
PS. What sort of lens are these pics taken with?
AWESOME!
