M Brown, you went a bit too far with the JPG compression, I think. It’s hard to tell the quality of the lens from the photos. Can you show a somewhat less compressed picture – or a crop of one perhaps? Thanks 🙂

I’m struggling with the same problem. The 75-300mm lens can do the job, but more often doesn’t. Focussing often seems to be slightly off with fast moving subjects and optically it ain’t great. The purple artifacts are very troublesome.

I’m leaning towards the Sigma 50-500mm at the moment, as the zoom range is just wonderful – as is the price. But the crispness and -for me- the zoom ring (opposed to push-pull) are two big cons. Haven’t decided yet…

Does Cosina still produce the cheap 100-400mm? It’s a great lens for the price, although focussing is dreadfully slow, it does take some dust and the purple edges are quite bad too. Said that, mine served me for eight years (although after a few years I got a sand grain in the focus ring and it tended to lock up a lot since…).
For the price it’s quite good value for money, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. I prefer it over Canon’s 75-300 though!!

    Thanks Jur & Neil!

I am using a Canon EOS 300D with a crappy Canon EF-II 75-300mm F/4.5-5.6 (which gives some horrible purple artifacts).
I normally use a different lens but it’s broken 🙁

I fiddled about quite a bit with the settings this time, due to the ever-changing light conditions. Some pics are taken at 1/320th, some at 1/250th and some at 1/200th – all at ISO 100. The Spitfire was taken at 1/100th to get the nice streaked background.
Exception is the Sabre, taken at ISO 200 and something like 1/800th s.

I used manual exposure on most of the pics, but occasionally Shuttertime Priority with +1 stop exposure compensation.

I never use any mono- or tripods, although I do occasionally lean on a fence! 😀

    Cheers guys!

Damien, no new lens yet… all with the crappy 75-300… oh! the purple halos…

The Storch replica definitely got a lot of attention. So much even, the owner dropped me an e-mail to rectify a few points about it. Let me quote from the e-mail:

My aeroplane is loosely based upon a “kit” kit but is certainly not representative of that product. For instance, the engine cowlings are completely different and more representative of the original.

For so many reasons, I always refer to my aeroplane as a Fieseler Fi156 Storch Replica…. which it IS.

One correspondent makes reference to a recent article in one of the aviation magazines. This was in “PILOT” magazine, but, because it does not represent the character and “end product” of my own example. I wrote a disclaimer letter to “PILOT” and they had the good grace to publish my letter last month, for which I thank them again.

Keep your eyes peeled for something special coming up SOON !…. Elsewhere but in England.

I have made many, many modifications and improvements, all of which have been approved and incorporated through the Popular Flying Association (Engineering Dept).

The colour scheme is entirely accurate and is a copy of an actual aeroplane, which, as it turns out, was shot down on exactly the day that I was born !

Many thanks for passing on the info to the other readers and for setting the record straight about MY aeroplane, which is unique.

    With best regards,

    John Ashby.

The Pup is beautiful in its new colours. Pity the sun was in hiding when it flew its display.

Fantastic set of pics! That Apache shot is absolutely wild! Would you mind posting a 1280×960 desktop wallpaper version of that – please? 😀

    Nice pic, thanks! 🙂
At Flying Legends the owner of the Skyraider said it needed a clean. From the shiny looks of it, they did give it a rub 😀 But clean a Skyraider will never be! 😉

If you can, wait another half year or so till the next Canon EOS generation comes out. The airshow season is nearly over anyway.
Currently there is the EOS 350D, which was only a minor upgrade to the EOS 300D. The next version should be a good improvement and my guess is lots of people will sell their EOS 300Ds and upgrade to the next model. The EOS 300D is undoubtedly the most popular digital SLR out there and with 6.3 MP it’s a very nice camera – especially for the price. You should be able to get your hands on one really cheap in a few months time.
