Its sad that those aircraft are being prematurely retired. Even Kenya Airways have got rid of their aircraft, lets hope Tap keep flying their A310s long haul for a few years.
Your father must have many fond memories. I know I have, I flew them many times and it was always an experience. They had such a wide variety of types in their fleet and had character and humour!
I fear that if they were still here today, they would have been quick to adopt the no-frills. However their Class Elite business service was very good!
I cant think of many other service industries where the passenger is treated worse now than 30 years ago, the likes of Air Europe and Air 2000 worked really hard to shake off the image of charter airlines treating people like cattle and now we have the likes of MyTravel and Britannia acting like British Rail,m charging you for a cheese sandwich!
Your argument doesnt hold. Yes oil, is more expensive etc but during the recession hit 80s early 90s airlines still managed to treat their passengers with a little dignity.
One never knows these days and thats the most annoying thing. I do not want to find myself stuck at the back where they used to stick chain-smokers and treated like a third class passenger.
At least when all the charter airlines offered the same you knew where you were. Even the cheapo airlines of the day such as Dan Air still gave you a spam salad or something!
Im not rich, unfortunately. However, I do object to airlines charging you for anything and everything. I remember charter flights back in the 80s when you got boiled seets on take off and landing, complimentary bucks fizz, hot meals on all departures and hot towel service. Now look at them they give you nothing and still the cramped seating, they have gone backwards.
Good, best place for such tight arses. Airlines should provide a complimentary meal on flights above 2 hours as standard anyway. I feel strongly about this as you will no doubt gather from my other posts.
I often think charter airlines introduced the charges for food in order to create a two-tier service. It also makes the rather thick but pretty cabin staff feel superior being able to sneer at the cheapskates at the back!
They had diverted but TFN was very busy in those days, as it was the only airport and received a lot of charter traffic, including wide-bodies.
The dan-air plabe G_BDAN was inbound from Manchester. Those poor people, all holidaymakers looking forward to a couple of weeks sunshine. The crash seems to have got very little coverage, despite the loss of British life.
I find TFN a very eerie airport and its history makes one shudder!
GB Airways has a proud history of serving GIB and deserve to be the main player. They have a quality economy and business product and will always attract the discerning leisure traveller and the business traveller. Monarch is fighting on cost and is losing precious regular travellers such as myself.
Before the introduction of ZB on the Man-Gib route I used GB and was always more than satisfied with the service, even though I had to connect at LGW.
Yes they can and I quite like them, its just the 321 I dont like. The 757 has given sterling service to the UK charter airlines. I remember flying on MON and AE 757s shortly after their introduction, made a nice change from the staple 732s which were the dominat charter type back then.
It still outperforms the A321 today at airports like LBA and GIB
Didnt know you could. I might try it then if I am going to get fed. I dont fancy sitting in the middle and been told they dont have anything left!
Seriously, you used to be able to book and know you would get something, it wasnt always brilliant but it was always gratefully recvd, by me anyway.
Whats the use of a free headset when my tummy is rumbling. I like to book holidays with Cosmos and book the Monarch Plus service, worth every penny. I certainly wont fly ZB again until I can be guaranteed a meal!
All its destinations are out in the sticks.
Yes, it was. They probably had to slam the reverse thrust on to get the thing to stop at LBA. The 757 was a much better performer at LBA and had no problems operating at high weights.
Really? Well Britannia ought to revert to the old livery, drop the Thomson branding and go back to giving their passengers a bit of sustenance! I dont care much about the IFE but I want feeding!
BD had problems operating the A321 ex LBA during the hot summer months when fully loaded. It was well documented at the time.
