The naval variant of the military’s fighter jet of the future arrived at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., on Nov. 6, a development that means the Navy and its industry partners are satisfied that the jet can safely perform basic flight maneuvers and is ready to tackle more demanding tests.
Behind the scenes, however, the Navy is struggling to remedy a significant design oversight that poses a major potential hindrance to its ability to successfully deploy and maintain the F-35C Lightning II, the carrier-based variant of the joint strike fighter: Its powerful single engine, when packed for shipping, is too large to be transported to sea by normal means when replacements are required.

Well after reading through the report they do point out that the engine does fit into the C2 if it isn’t in the container and some form of rail system can be used to slide it on and off the COD. I think the solution will be some form of lite collapsable frame (possibly Titanium) that can be easily stowed on the carrier without taking up too much space and a plastic wrap or sleeve to protect the engine from dust and the elements. Why mess around slinging it under a V22 or MH-53E when it can go in the C2 COD with some lateral thinking?

Its amazing how one unsubstantiated comment in a forum can develop a life of its own and start a thousand threads over the internet each one with a wilder version of the information then the last. Before you know it the idea ends up in publications.
I remember a few years back Air Forces Monthly actually reported in its news section that Iran was fitting its F14 Tomcat with AL31 turbofans from Russia, no truth in it whatsoever but again an unsubstantiated rumour started that idea rolling…:rolleyes:

Interesting, whats the current status of the FAV C130H?
Well my reasoning would be there is no British carrier in the UK preserved for future generations to explore.
Actually the only preserved British built carrier is HMS Hercules (R49)/INS Vikrant (R11) in Mumbai but she saw no service with the RN.
HMS Invincible has an actual combat record which certainly qualifies her for preservation to my mind.

Israel has a significant amount of German defence equipment in service most notably Submarines and surplus Patriot launchers.
It takes no job away from the French workers ~ This plan can not become the truth until the French government finally decides that it simply has no enough money to formally the start PA2 project. And if the French government decides to cancel the PA2 project finally, the French workers won’t be able to get any new jobs from this cancelled project, no matter UK sells the unwanted CVF to the French navy or not.
Taking on CVF WOULD mean lost FRENCH jobs!
The jobs that would of been sustained building PA2! Yes there are no jobs if the French don’t build PA2 anyway but taking on CVF would just rub the noses of French shipyard workers in the dirt!

The fact is India has no interest or need for one of the UK CVF, they can produce carriers themselves cheaper and quicker (IAC-1 is going to hit service not that long after Vikramaditya). To make it attractive to them the UK would virtually have to give it to them at the cost to the British tax payer. The only other country who might like it is Brazil but again they have their own plans to build carriers so to make it attractive CVF would have to be virtually given away.
For me the three key thing for the next five years until the next SDSR that needs to be repeatedly pointed out to the government:
1) One carrier is not enough to maintain proper operations.
2) How do they intend to maintain FAA fast jet capabilities and skills (actually the most important) until the F35C start to stand up.
3) There isn’t really any realistic market for a CVF!
CVF offers India no economic benefits. Its not the dependent ex-colony it was a few decades ago, but an emerging power. That being said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Indians did something similar to the French and build their own CVF variant.

IAC-2 is being built in blocks from the keel up not super blocks.
A super block is in effect a major part of the ship with its systems installed. It requires great skill and a fair amount of risk to build them, as the tolerances have to be very close when matching up the major blocks.
Building in small blocks from the keel up is far less risky as you have more leeway to adjust during build.
There other disadvantage with super blocks is you have to use a less hydrodynamically advanced hull line hindering performance. Thats the reason the recent French PA2 design was able to drop a gas turbine, they intend to build from the keel up a more slippery hull. CVF is going to need all the grunt she can muster to enable her to get the speed to generate enough wind over deck for CATOBAR operations.
On the other hand Super Blocks can give major savings and BAE Systems have shown that the can do it, the Type 45 which is also a Super Block design (albeit smaller) is exceeding her estimated design speed which was set rather conservatively.

I wonder what those large cylindrical objects beside the Type730 and FL3000N are? They appear to be on a rotating mount and are similar in shape to a searchlight, could they be RBU, or some form of defensive chaff launcher?
Iran knows full well that Israel can easily penetrate its air defences, that is the main reason Iran has focused its defence procurement on building mobile missile launchers for IRBM.
Iran has hundreds of mobile TELs for various short to medium range missiles. Further from that they have been producing significant numbers of antiship missiles, mines and torpedos.
For Iran if it is threatened with attacked by Israel an asymmetric response is by far the most effective deterrent! Israel can’t possibly hope to take out all those launchers targeted at their cities and the Persian gulf can be shut down for transit. Add to that Iraq will be stirred back up into a blood bath and a number of other Islamic countries would probably be pushed over the edge.
This is the main reason that Israel has not attacked Iran so far, the cost is too great. In the end the best solution for Israel now (and actually one quitely pointed out by US military officials) if Iran becomes a nuclear state is detterence via the promise of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).
It’s rather mind-blowing to think about the amount of Zimbabwean dollars required to pay a fighter squadron. Are their chequebooks wide enough? They may use powers of ten, though. Like in Z$5.10²².
I would think any defence equipment purchased by the Zim from China will be paid for with natural resources and minerals.

The UK testing the F35B is not going to make an iota of difference to its export chances.
In the end the only other country who wants it at the moment is Italy and I am sure Spain will want it as well.
Most countries will want the A or C model, if anyone is interested in a B purchase will look to the testing done by the USMC. Any sales that result will benefit the UK regardless of us testing the type as a mjor proportion of the airframe and systems come from the UK or US based BAE Systems subsidaries.
