    The MiG can fly 40 min at max power, but it is limited by fuel quantity, about 15 tonnes against 38 tonnes of SR-71.

    Maybe it can but it arrives back at base with two wrecked engines! Thats the difference between the types. The Mig25 has two turbojets working at the margins of reliability on the other hand the SR71 had two hybrid turboramjets optimised for long duration flights at high numbers. Doesn’t mean the SR71 wasn’t a maintenance ******* but in the end it was a very exotic high value recon platform.

    The 330 crowd keeps repeating it ’cause thats all they’ve got for a selling point, the size of the airplane. When that’s all you’ve got to hang your hat on, you repeat it ad nausem.

    For the ORIGINAL spec., before everything got all politicized, the 767 based platform was much better sized for the stated mission. The 330 is too big! In a de-politicized arena, the 767 platform would win based upon suitability for the originally stated mission.

    No the a330 won the recent competition based on the critera provided, in each area it beat the 767 on performance except one where they were equal. It was chosen as by that criteria it was the lower risk, the cargo and fuel off load was a seperate issue.

    It was given extra credit for also being able to carry more fuel and cargo which is where all the trouble started. Technically under the criteria they shouldn’t of done that, if the USAF hadn’t done that then Boeing would of had less reason to protest.

    What are you talking about? That US Navy had not theirs own AWACS? Did you hear of E-2C?
    That is not excuse for disastrous performance of AIM-54 missile, in optimum enviroment.

    The Tomcats tried to down Mig-23 also, but with no success, of course.

    Phoenix was an amazing system designed for a certain scenario, the intercept of bombers attacking the fleet as far out as possible over water.

    An Mi8 would not be an optimal target for that weapon system, it was useable and Iran certainly had a degree of success. As for the USN they never got into a Scenario that would of favoured its performance. The Libyan Mig23 etc… shot down by USN F14 were is visual range favouring Sparrow and Sidewinder.

    Have I heard about the E2C … of course don’t be stupid.

    I ask have you done any research about Gulf war 1? The air battle over Iraq was controlled by airforce E3 Sentry, the E2C operated over the coalition fleet, they were in no position to vector any F14 onto Iraqi fighters. On the other hand air force Sentrys were not interested in vectoring navy fighters onto targets especially as there were air force fighters closer to hand. Some of that was down to the location of the F14’s, some of it was down to incompatability of the two systems (that was an excuse given by the USAF) and the rest was down to interservice politics the USAF airforce wanted all the glory.

    It is designed to counter Blackbird also, not only XB-70.

    You are obviously misled by some cheap literature.

    In fact, it was discovered, after Japan landing, that it is very advanced interceptor with no western equivalent, in terms of propulsion, weapon systems and performance.

    It had the most powerful radar in the world, which no one could jamm, it has very high performance missiles, which have speed of more than 7 Mach after launch (combined missile and a/c speed), so that they have to be made of titanium, has very advanced digital computer, and able to execute all fighter maneuvers (which no other Mach 3 a/c can do), and most important of all, it denied Americans from using SR-71 in its intended role (to spy russians), as the American general Keegan say.

    So, it was the SR-71 which, because of Mig-25, never fulfiled its intended role.
    And because of extraordinary Mig-31, it was retired from service entirely.

    I am very well read in the literature – maybe better then you. The mainstream literature all state how crude and primative Belenko’s Foxbat was. This doesn’t mean that Western airforces were not impressed with the outright performace of the aircraft, but you are mixing powerful with sophisticated which it just wasn’t.

    For example the radar wasn’t just behind the state of the art it was very primative (even had valve technology). On the other hand its raw power would of been handy to burn through heavy ECM something that would of worried the Soviets. You keep coming back to its amazing manouvreability at Mach 3, frankly this shows you have no understanding of basic aerodynamics. At high altitude and Mach no aircraft can fling it around the sky, the most that it could do in the thin air is to change its heading.

    You keep on coming back to the SR71, it was never intended as an interceptor so I don’t know why you have a hang up over its supposed failure in that role.

    Finally neither the Mig25 or Mig31 ever stopped or even deterred the SR71 from doing what it wanted. It was an aircraft that operated at Mach 3 for sustained periods. Off Russia SR71’s would operate a race track up and down the border over the sea passing by Sweden. There was no way that Russian Mig25/31 could intercept on the up leg of the mission so the tactic they operated was to try and lay a trap on return leg. They only ever managed to get a Mig31 there once to try an intercept and even then it would of been a marginal shot.

    It is a big embarasment for USN that they didn’t manage to shoot down a single a/c in IRAQ with much publicised Phoenix.

    The Migs were too fast and elusive, even for the latest F-14D/Phoenix combination.

    Even Mi-8 helicopter was missed.

    There were many targets, the Tomcats were shooting from the safe distances, the americans had 100:1 numerical superiority and total airspace domination, yet, the Phoenix did nothing.

    That was the reason of Phoenixes premature retirement from service, in 2004.
    It was found that it was totaly unuseful.
    Because of that the Tomcat was retired prematurely also, in 2006, in spite of planned 2012.

    Phoenix was retired because it was an expensive system to maintain on a fighter that was going to be phased out shortly after.

    As for Gulf War 1 the Tomcats much to the pilots frustration were not tasked over Iraqi airspace. The E3 AWACS worked best with F15’s plus a fair degree of interservice rivalry meant the airforce Sentrys preferred tasking airforce fighters to targets.

    Everyone have to bear in mind that the MiG-25 is the only Mach 3 combat a/c.
    The western nations failed in that field. The YF-12 was experimental a/c only, never destined to success, because of its sensitive propulsion system and weak airframe.

    On the other hand, the Russians succeded to make Mach 3 multi role combat a/c, and not only that but to build it in great numbers, to sell it abroad and even to offer it for civilian flights !!!

    To build such a/c it was necessary to satisfy many contradicting requirements:

    1-propulsion system which can tolerate such extreme temperatures and at the same time not to be sensitive to intake airflow disturbances, permiting fighter maneuvers.

    2- airframe which can endure such temperatures and also 11g overloads without breaking, and high dynamic pressures, permiting 1300 km/h sea level speed.

    3-long range radar and electronics which can endure 300 degrees C temperatures. Not easy to do. The B-58 Hustler suffered radar failures at 130 degrees C.

    4-underwing titanium plated long range missiles which can withstand such extreme enviroments.

    5-and all this combined with ability to maneuver as normal figher a/c, rolls, loops,Immelmans, zoom climbs, split-S, fast dives, etc,etc,

    These are, from engineering point of view, contradicting requirements almost impossible to satisfy.
    Every aircraft designer knows that.

    The fact is that the west failed and the Russians succeded to solve these engineering problems.

    Firebar please now this is getting childish! The Mig-25 is an amazing achievment which can’t be taken away from the Russian aviation industry but you really over egging its capabilities.

    As for the West not fielding a Mach 3 interceptor, well they could if they wanted. In the end it was decided that missiles were the way forward and there wasn’t a requirement for a fighter with that performance, nothing to do with a failure in Western aerospace development. The YF-12 was a spy plane first and foremost the missile capability was developed to meet a threat that never was. The Mig-25 was only developed because the Soviet Union thought that the XB-70 was going to be fielded.

    When Victor Belenko defected with a Mig 25 to Japan Western airforces were shocked with how primative it was. In effect it was a fighter designed to intercept a Mach 3 bomber with the help of GCI and then burn through heavy jamming with its powerful but crude radar to get a missile off.

    Not into the A43 cells. They’re Aster 15 size, too short for an Aster 30. The A70 cells can take Aster 30, & also have scope for potential future Asters with larger boosters.

    Add another vote to the “Good ship for C1” tally.

    Whoops my bad! A70 is the one you want but you get the principle. Modern datalinking allows far more flexability. We have these nice T45 with powerful radar and computers capable of handling missiles launched from other ships, a rather handy way of boosting your area air defence capability without having to pay for the big ticket item like Sampson.

    I wouldnt be so disheartened Planeman. What you’ve actually done is to show people how vital it is to correctly define the scope of a project before embarking on the basics of the design. Also what happens when project definition is ill-thought out how quickly capability-creep takes a project out of all bounds of sense even though the ‘individual steps’ may seem almost plausible.

    You started this with the premise that the RN needed a new escort to fit into the CVF taskgroup going forwards. In reality most of this designs itself based on the limits around it. Seeings AAW is covered by the t45’s for the next two decades at least, and the ageing T22B3/T23 fleet is going to present a Fleet ASW gap with a secondary ‘DLG’ requirement the roles required of this escort are manifest. These roles also define the sensors that will be employed and, therefore, the hull numbers in the class.

    There are only eight 2087 towed array sonars in the escort fleet, so, the RN’s next ASW combattant class numbers 8 hulls only!. 8 hulls is too few to be risking them inshore chasing down SSK’s and we arent going to be affording an allround competent GP frigate for C2 when we cant afford to send T23’s on deployment today. That means the new 2087 ships must be capable of as much standoff ASW as we can provide them with. Standoff ASW for the RN means Merlin HM1 and so the new escort MUST be an aviation-weighted design. Noting that sentence used the word ‘escort’ and not ‘carrier’ as this still needs to be a vessel capable of consorting HVU’s and NOT an HVU itself in need of escort!.

    So we have already pre-defined mission, sensors, performance, armament, hull numbers and only, realistically, have cost/logistics/supportability left as a variable. By that I mean can we provide a hull that services all the pre-defined criteria for a price that can be met by the defence budget. Thats the challenge and it, I’m afraid, is not met by the kind of fancy pentamaran through-deck CGH’s you want to draw. I would like to see what your design package could do with the below concept though:

    Essentially still a big ship, knocking on cruiser sized, but nothing really ‘big-ticket’ expensive. No PAAMS so saving of near £200mn on T45 before stretch costs. Sensors/weapons transferred across, mostly, from T23. A43 cells for theoretical quadpack CAAMS, 32 LACM capable cells for meaningful secondary land-attack capability. Hul stretch allowing for increase in dieso and avcat bunkerage, air ordnance stores etc. Cant see why this wouldnt be considerably cheaper than T45. C1 sorted IMO!

    That hits the nail nicely on the head, adaptable enough to meet several needs and pulling plenty of equipment from the big RN spares bin.

    I like the idea of having the a43 VLS cells in there as well, we can shove what ever missile we want in them within reason so for normal day to day duties CAAMS it is but as I have said before if we did suddenly find ourselves in a big shooting war there is no reason why we couldn’t drop ASTER30 into the cells and allow the Type45 to deal with targeting via a datalink. Its what the Americans are doing with the integration of CEC capability (the RN is looking in joining that) where the big AEGIS platforms use the lower tier asw platforms as spare missile silos.

    In effect for the price of a frigate without all that expensive area radar stuff you get a spare AAW asset!:D

    yes, why not? Gives the S1850M 3-D air surveillance radar a frontal arc. Sampson would be higher up obviously.

    Iranian Tomcat pilots certainly weren’t scared of nor had any problems swatting them down either. If you want to determine just how effective the MiG-25P was, we should really look at it’s kill/loss ratio. An unsurpassed aircraft of such awesome performance and excellent capability must surely have a dominant kill/loss ratio, right?

    Yes there are several SAM systems that can engage the foxbat if they so wanted and as somebody else has pointed out in most cases we are not talking about direct overflight but runs along the border. The high speed flight over Israel pretty much wrecked the engines and more then one was shot down by the F15/ Sparrow combination.

    Fascinating aircraft but certainly not the supership your talking about firebar.

    You are the one who is wrong. Boeing has proven over & over & over again that it is perfectly capable of developing new derivatives of existing platforms.

    The KC-767AT has a lot in common with the Italian & Japanese KC-767s. Even the 6th generation boom is based on the 5th generation boom on the Italian & Japanese KC-767s. And much of what it does not have in common with the Italian & Japanese KC-767s it has in common with one or more other 767 derivatives.

    The KC-30 DOES NOT offer superior performance to the KC-767AT, just greater capacity BUT the tradeoffs in REAL WORLD capability outweigh the greater capacity. YOU ARE just spouting EADS/Airbus propaganda. My outlook is not myopic at all, but yours is clouded by misinformation and overly simplistic 1-vs-1 comparrisons of numbers with no clue what the numbers REALLY mean & how the numbers effect REAL WORLD capability.

    I never said I want the Boeing product because its the home product. Although I have defended a person’s right to back the home team.

    I never said they didn’t buy some Boeings (Air France seems fond of 777s) …especially in cases like the 787 where there is no Airtbus equivalent.
    If you count tails, I believe the national airlines of those countries have larger Airbus fleets than Boeings…
    Again countries try to keep their money at home. (Witness the WAH-64s…would if have been cheaper to just buyt “off the shelf” American Apaches?
    Same with all the Westland-built Sikorskys over the last 60 years).
    It’s to be expected…and why the US does not have a western monopoly.

    There is an equivalent to the 787 the a350 😀 its just a bit further behind in the development schedule partially due to the a380 but also due the a330 being so good its still competative and picking up orders.

    As for the Westland Sikorskies yes your right it would of been far cheaper to buy direct off the American line, some of that is due to keeping the money home but the main reason is keeping the SKILLS home. By building in the UK high tech aerospace skills are maintained here ensuring independance of defence procurement and protecting jobs which isn’t an unreasonable cocept, its one of the reasons there has to be a local line for the KC45.

    To look particularly at the WAH64 it would of been far cheaper to procure them directly off Boeing and that issue has been raised in UK circles but that doesn’t protect UK jobs. Also in the case of the Apache they are we would call CKD (completely knocked down) kits with the parts being made in America and final assembly here rather then licence production. Further from that the UK spec Apaches are fairly different from other AH64D with a more advanced electronics fit and different more pwerful engines along with the blade fold system.

    No, I do not work for Boeing.

    A MINOR issue, yes – minimal risk. Boeing has already built 6 commercial 767 derivatives & 2 KC-767 derivatives (although the Italian & Japanese KC-767s are so close as to possibly be considered one derivative with customer specific equipment). The 767-200LRF/KC-767AT is just one/two more 767 derivative(s). Every part of the airframe is already FAA certified & flying on existing 767s. Plus Boeing has proved through the P-8 Poseidon (being a “Frankenstein 737”) that combining parts from different derivatives of a platform is something that it is well capable of doing.

    Sorry but the NG/EADS KC-30 DOES NOT offer superior performance, it is just bigger & heavier and the disadvantages of its greater size & weight far outweight the theoretical & unproven/unjustified benefits/advatanges of its greater capacity. Not to mention the fact that even the 2007 solicitation did not ask for a KC-30-like tanker, as I said, if anything it asked for something LESS than the KC-767AT.

    The Australian KC-30B is NOT the same as the NG/EADS KC-30 proposed for the KC-X. If it were then its SDD time & cost would be next to zero since it would already be being done & paid for by other customers. It is much closer than the Italian & Japanese KC-767s are to the KC-767AT BUT it has its own set of risks. And if you want to compare SIMILAR derivatives of the respective tankers, the Italian & Japanese KC-767s are MUCH more operational than the Australian KC-30B is or is even expected to be until next year.

    Note that it is NG/EADS, not Northrop Grumman. Northrop Grumman’s workshare/content by falue is unlikely more than 1/3 the total. You don’t see Italy calling its tankers Alenia Aeronautica/Finmeccanica KC-767s or Australia calling its tankers Qantas KC-30B…

    Why, the 777-200 is a MUCH better airliner in that markes segment & the 767-200 based KC-767 easily met & exceeded the requirements of the tanker program. It is only because the DOD (not the USAF) has changed the requirements (again) to favor the otherwise too big & noncompetative KC-30 that there is even any question what Boeing will propose for round three.

    Im sorry Pfcem but your plain wrong on so many levels that its unreal, how you can consider the 767 proposal for the tanker competition low risk I do not know. Its nowhere near the Italian or Japanese tankers that have a lower fuel offload then KC135 and are plagued with problems delaying entry into service. The KC30 on the other hand is pretty much what Northrop Grumman is offering and going through relatively painless entry to service testing.

    The KC30 does offer clearly superior performance to the KC-767 in whatever guise, your just spouting Boeing propaganda and have a frankly myopic outlook. For example the a330 MRTT was offered for the RAF against the KC-767, it was found that operating out of Brize Norton on a standard North Atlantic trail the KC767 could stay an extra 10 minutes on station over the VC10. On the other hand the a330 could stay an extra hour on station operating out of Tolouse which is several hundred miles further south.

    If you want to say that you want the Boeing product because its the home product I have no problem every person has a right to back the home team.

    I notice that ZJ946 and ZJ947 tranche 2 Typhoons made their first flights recently. It would appear that these are going to be delivered to the RAF and not the RSAF as RSAF Typhoons will be designated as ZK. According to this website http://www.targetlock.org.uk/typhoon/production_uk.html the RAF will be getting 7 of the first Tranche 2 Typhoons. I understand that these aircraft will only have the F2 software and not the ‘austere’ air-to-ground software of the FGR4. If this is the case they would seem ideally suited to the Falklands operations.

    On that note I wonder how the ramp up is going to start operations at MPA, have the fit tests happened yet for the C17 to fly the airframe down.

    I would presume the initial Typhoon to go down will be F2, the FGR4 are too useful elsewhere.
