That the RAF are looking at using 707 for the ELINT role shows how unhappy they are with the whole tanker contract. If they wanted a bigger airframe the a330 would probably be quite suitable for the role and they could tie it in with the a330 tanker service contract. I presume that they think that they could get used 707 airframes long before they see the first tanker and by using a loosely common type to the E3D they can use common support and servicing.

A shame really I would be happy to see an ELINT a330 or 767.

So all in all a sensible move for Iran, their aerospace industry will benefit from the input of advanced technology and a trainer is always a good starting point when you want to improve your aerospace industry.

It certainly fits in with Irans drive for self reliance in this area and for Russia they get a discreet influx of cash and work as well as increased influence in the region.

Iran is really on the clock now they can only maintain their fleet of T-33, F-5, F-4 and F-14 for a finite amount of time. An aircraft like this would allow them to start retiring their training aircraft and possibly even some of the F-5.

Yeah the Saudis like to pay for a multi year training and support contract for their aircraft and any weapon system for that matter – the Chinese surface to air missiles they brought have a sizeable Chinese support contingent.

Usually when a country buys a weapon system the manufacturer or in the case of American FMS sales the USAF provide initial training and support for the aircraft and over time this responsibility is handed over to the purchaser with only parts being supplied in the end. Now the Saudis will just pay the manufacturer to supply all of that for the life of the aircraft or weapon system. At this moment there are a huge amount of foreign personel providing maintenance, support and training for the Saudis.

In this case over the Aircraft sale the big payoff for Bae Systems is the support contract, in many ways the previous big Al Yamarah deal bankrolled bae for the 80’s and 90’s.

Moussez said that in dogfight exercises, the Rafale had outflown F-15, F-16 and F-18 opponents, and in technical and performance evaluations “we have systematically won against the F-15 and the Eurofighter Typhoon.”
Yet it lost to the F-15 in competitions to sell to South Korea and Singapore. Moussez said it was outflanked in the former case on political grounds and in the latter case on costs, noting that the dollar had depreciated 30 percent over the period of the Singapore competition.

I can’t really argue against the fact that the Rafale has outflown F-15, F-16 and F-18 in combat exercises it has been reported in numerous sources including Key Publishings own magazines.

I do have a problem with the statement:

that the Rafale has in technical and performance evaluations “we have systematically won against the F-15 and the Eurofighter Typhoon”.

To me that sounds like brochure speak and just a bit to similar to the wild claims of the DERA study that found in favour of the Eurofighter. Its a statement which means nothing in the real world.

Each time the Eurofighter and rafale were in competition, the Rafale won :p

You can Google news it, I think Reuters had a report. Its well known that France has been keen to get this order. As for your other point, as has already pointed out its a bit more complicated then that with different aircraft performing better in different areas. Anyway as far as Im aware its Typhoon with two export orders to Rafales zero……nuff said! 😀

Very good news especially as the French had been actively trying to get the Saudis to renage on their commiitment for Typhoon and get Rafale. According to various reports there had been alot of arm twisting on the French side to get the Saudis to drop Typhoon.

Yeah I was surprised about the 707 as well but when you sit down and think about it there is some logic to it. Its a nice big airframe and it would be common to the E3D.

As for Storm Shadow they told me not only is it a cert but they are working on it now.

Had a good look at the Y8 balance beam AEW platform on Sinodefence and I have changed my mind.

There is a good chance looking at the scale that this is the correct aircraft.

first time look inside in a unkown AWACS possibaly the Y-8 type. 🙂 :p 😎

Hmmm, cetainly an exciting picture to find but to my eye the interior looks a bit small to be the Y8. I could be wrong but certainly I will need to spend a while looking at Sinodefence to make a decision.
