Thanks for posting the CAA document Auster Fan.

The AAIB report and John Dodd’s article prove that no matter how well trained, professional, and experienced a display pilot you are, there is still be ‘human factors’ that will sometimes make their presence.

    Cheers

Now here is a question regarding 109s that I have to admit I have forgotten the answer too despite being a regular at Duxford in the early to mid 90s

What happened to the replica (?) 109 Gustav that OFMC had, which spent a bit of time at Fowlmere in about 93 in crashed pose. A question from someone on Facebook tempted me to answer it. Except i’ve forgotten the correct answer….

And I don’t think I ever got a pic of it either!

If I recall correctly, that was G-BWUE, now back with its original registration, G-AWHK, and operated by ARC.

During it’s time with OFMC, it had a fiberglass G model nose attached.

There is a picture of it in the OFMC hangar in the 1997 Flypast special ‘Luftwaffe Eagles’.

According to a video posted on Facebook, Buchon G-AWHH has just been successfully test flown. Great stuff!

I still say that the front top cowling on P3717 is an oddly slanting downwards shape. It certainly does not have the usual profile of any other Hurricane, MkI or MkII .

So what the heck is going on with that Hurricane top cowl? I just googled images of Hurricanes & couldn’t find another one that looks like that.

Me neither, and no answer seems to have yet surfaced since P3717 took to the air again!

I thought it might have been something unique to the MK.II that I’ve missed, as that’s the standard P3717 has been restored/rebuilt as.

Anyway, it seems we will soon see another one, this time fitted to MK.I V7497/G-HRLI!

(Note the Hamilton Standard prop and spinner as well).

Depending upon how the Brexit debacle plays out, post event “quick flips” across the channel (in either direction) may become much more difficult and onerous to organise if one has to organise temporary import licences, VAT exemption paperwork etc. It may simply not be worth it. The law of unintended consequence maybe, but a potential consequence none the less.

Only if the relevant ‘authorities’ decide that’s the way they want it to be!

Indeed, it is looking like it will be another cracking show.

(I’m not sure what the ‘Brexit factor’ has to do with lack of European participants though).

Hopefully, another Buchon will be added to the list: –

Badly damaged today after failing to take off from Woodchurch. The new owner who was flying it is ok

    Oh dear!

Good to hear the new owner was not injured.

A shame, but I’m sure the damage will be repaired.

Taxi out for first post restoration flight at East Midlands 17 July 1984.

Like Daz, I had it in my mind that it sported the correct deep lower cowling, if only for a very limited time.

So I just took a look through ‘Spitfire – A Living Legend’ by Jeremy Flack, and all the pictures show it with the non PR lower cowling.

(Even a trawl through various photos on the web of it from the Roland Frassinet period showed this to indeed be the case).

Probably just a case of the mind playing tricks, or getting it muddled up with the curved front windscreen being replaced later on!

(Oh, for reference, note the ‘flat’ Supermarine top cowling in M12’s picture for comparison).

Great to see PL983 back in the air again.

    And looking very nice too!

I had read about the decision to use the normal profile lower cowling (although it was mentioned they may well fit the deeper one on occasion), but it’s interesting that they decided to use the Castle Bromwich type ‘blown’ top cowling instead of the ‘flat’ type as used by Supermarine on the PRXI, (and of course the MK IXs, VIIs, & VIIIs, the later two which were built exclusively by them).

So it would seem that they have gone for CBAF MK IX cowlings, as I note the port side cowling has the ‘D’ shaped oil filler door, as opposed to the larger and different shaped one fitted on the PRXI.

I see also there is no blister on the starboard side, another exclusive to Supermarine built 60s/70 series Merlin powered Spitfires, leftover from the cabin blower drive that was fitted on the Merlin 61.

    Cracking pics by all btw!

    Cheers

Well, that is a shame, but I guess he feels the time is right.

I recall reading in the feature on him in Aeroplane that he mentioned he was going to be cutting back the amount of displays commitments so he could spend more time with his family, who he pointed out, had been very supportive in his Hangar 11 operation and display flying over the years.

As you can see from this thread, his efforts to keep a collection of historic aircraft flying and also keep them in the public eye have been very much appreciated by us!

But one has to say that since the Shoreham tragedy and all the restrictions and extra bureaucracy that has come with it for pilots (and organisers alike), you can see why some other long time display pilots have come to the same decision.

great day, got there at 9.00am on the dot, massive queues already, and gates had been opened an hour beforehand

Actually, it would seem they opened a tad before 9am!

We got there at about ten past nine (about usual for us), and much to our surprise, there was a long que along Hill Lane from just as you approach the airfield, to the entrance, which took us about another 20 minutes to reach the gates.

And once in, we found ourselves in the highly unusual situation of finding ourselves in overflow parking!

Having a chat with one of the parking control staff about it later, it transpires that people had started turning up as early as 6.am, causing the road to be backed up, so the only option was to let them in.

But with the wonderful weather, and a great display lineup, I guess it should have been no surprise!

And it was a great show.

Highlight fro me was the Blenheim, with John Romain putting to good use the closeness of the Old Warden display line, and showing how a display in such an aircraft (and venue) should be done.

Loved the pilot chat with Stu Goldspink, who’s easy, engaging, and friendly manner made it another highlight.

(Looking forward to the video being posted of it on the Shuttleworth YouTube channel).

And talking of Spitfires, a nice surprise was the appearance of the BBMFs newly painted XVI, which gave some nice passes, filling in whilst the Lanc and Anson formed up.

A really nice day, and one that must have pleased the organisers.

    Cheers

    Paul
