    Roll on Virtual Farnborough 2006!!

Don’t you mean roll on Virtual Flying Legends 2006! 😀

    Anyway, nice shots!

Peter, assuming you’ve got FS2002 or 2004, you might like you might like to try the Netwings server.

It host both sims and often you get people doing formation flights in anything from fast jets to Warbirds.

Go to http://www.netwings.org/ for more info.

Good bunch of people form all over the world fly there and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

    Cheers

3)even with AI aircraft and AFCAD files, LHR is never as busy as real life where you hold over London…same story as Dallas, New York, Frankfurt….

Everyone who’s flown FS a lot realises that even on a decent system, the AI can be quite a big hit on FS performance.

As I understand it, FS9 will adjust the AI depending on your system.

Not sure exactly how it works, but I suspect that even if you have it set to 100%, it may only use 75% to help with performance on your particular system.

Btw, have you tried one of the AI add on packages such as Ultimate Traffic?

These use real airlines schedules and proper airlines and their planes and are supposed to offer a great improvement over the default AI.

I for one look forward to the new version of FS.

However, I’m not in a hurry for the next version and am quite happy for the wait. Hopefully they, will fix the bugs, as even with the patch, I still get a fair amount of CTD’s and crashes which can of course be fustrating. 😡

I must admit, FS2002 was much better in this respect and it seemed to perform better even on an average system.

That said, FS9 has so many more improvements and looks better than 2002 and hopefully the next version will continue that trend and it seems the FS development team have been listening to their customers. 🙂

As for the flight modelling, well this is one of the greatest parts of the sim that is open to all sorts of myths rather than facts. Yes, it does use table based modelling, the default FM’s are poor but actually, the FM engine of the FS sims is actually very good if you give it the opportunity! 😉

Of course, it is not perfect, and the areas I’d like to see improved are that of supersonic flight, VSTOL/Helicopters and the engine modelling. If they could model supercharges properly then I’d be happy!

I would also like to see regional ATC accents, but I doubt this will happen (I may be wrong) purely because of the huge amount of recordings needed for each accent. You can of course record and change them to what ever accent suits (there’s an SDK for the ATC) but sadly in FS8 & 9 it can’t be used for different regions. 🙁 And talking of the ATC implementation, I wonder if MS have been experimenting with voice avtivated ATC?

I’d also like to see the AI performance improved, especially in the circuit, as C172’s and the like often fly Bomber Command style circuits which is a pain when you get told to go around or not to take off, yet they are still 5 miles out on final!

    Just my 2 pence worth.

    Cheers

I managed to see it too, and thought it was a nicely filmed piece.

But I was a bit alarmed that they seem to hammer on a few times about how dangerous flying Warbirds is. Not to sure were they got the “On average, two people per year are killed flying Warbirds” though.

Still, I guess we should be glad that Historic aviation got a slot on TV, even if it was just the local channel.

JDK, thanks for the info on the hook.

It was in an article by Airbedane that mentioned the CoG problems and replacement with a fibreglass one.

I must admit, all the times I’ve looked around the aircraft at OW, I’ve never taken a good look at the hook!

Rocketeer, interesting what you say about the Hurricane having neutral stablity. It seems that the Sea Hurricane didn’t as in the same article IIRC, Airbedane mentions that the Pilots Notes for the Sea Hurricane hint at instablity with phrases such as “It is difficult to trim the aircraft to fly hands off” & “the aircraft will tighten and tends to ‘tuck in’ during turns.

I haven’t got the article to hand, but recall that he said this was true of Z7015 without the original hook and it’s gear fitted. Regarding the ‘tuck in’ during turns, from what I’ve heard, the land based equivilant had this problem too, and come to think of it, I recall John Allison mentioning on an airshow video that the Hurricane was dynamically unstable in pitch.

It would be interesting to hear what Airbedane has to say about how the Vacher Hurricane handles (I’m sure he’s flown it), which is supposed to have a more aft CoG than other flying examples because of all the stock military equipment and guns etc.

I don’t know the answers to the other questions, but I believe Ant is correct about the tailhook in that the original unit was causing problems with tail heaviness so it was removed and a fibre glass replica was used instead. And he is right about it not being able to be retracted in flight.

As for an aerobatic routine, well I guess the aircraft could fly one if desired but as it is powered by a rather rare Merlin III, I suspect that the pilots and engineers like to see it operated within it’s limits to prolong it’s life and that the higher power settings needed for an aerobtic display might not be to good for it in the long run. And maybe the airframe still has a CoG that is slightly aft of what’s acceptable for an aerobatic routine.

I’m sure Airbedane can answer that one for us. 😉

Oh, I’ve just remembered, I think Steve McManus was involved in the rebuild and looks after Z7015 today.

As a last resort (and those not in the region)…..

    Select website:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/lookeast/images/banner_lookeast_650.gifLINK

Look for this http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/lookeast/images/nav_watchle_210.gif (bottom right) and it should be available for viewing after the broadcast.

    Thanks 1stThings1st.

But don’t forget, if your not in the region and have Sky Digital, go to channel 952 for BBC East W. 🙂

Might even be a piece on ITV Anglia W also, which you can get on Sky if you’re not in that region. 😉
