ยฃยฃยฃยฃ – It’s not just the flying display….!
Well, I’m glad that those that went today got something out of it and enjoyed the show, despite the poor weather.
Avro’s Finest,
Sorry to hear you got an earful from Joe Public. ๐
I do think that some valid points have been raised here though, which all airshow organisers, not just the IWM, should take note of.
Whilst some might disagree, I think maybe it’s time that entry/additional prices get reviewed. I think the main gripe is not necessarily that ยฃ23 quid is expensive, but what do you actually get for it? The flying display is one thing, but what about parking, food, view of the display, toilet facilities etc. These are all the things that the display organisers should consider. And are things like the extra cost of say a flightline walk or seating justified and do these increased costs give value for money to the spectator?
If prices do continue to rise but with no real benefit to the spectator, they might well keep people from returning to future displays, be it the knowledgeable enthusiast or non-aviation orientated family. So what I and I guess most of us are saying to the organisers is treat the punter with a bit of respect & decency and give them value for money!
From my experience at this years Flying Legends, it was almost as if those who do not buy Gold or Platinum passes were treated as second-class spectators. You could almost hear the IWM saying, ” We’ve got your money, now sod off and enjoy the day!” O.K, that might be a bit harsh, but at todayโs show for example, should you really have to pay for ยฃ5 for seating and ยฃ5 again for a flightline walk on top of the entry fee and programme? And should you really have to pay ยฃ65 for a Gold Pass (This will no doubt go up next year) for what amounts to nothing more than guaranteed & hassle free parking, a seat, good view, a free flightline walk & programme, a marquee with bar and central base for the day?
With the ‘normal’ spectators car parks being so far away at DX (and the other big shows for that matter), it means you can’t stay with the car if you want any chance of seeing the display or shelter if the weather turns nasty. And it also means a long walk with all your stuff (and can also be a problem if you have someone elderly with you) just to find a spot to view the show with nowhere comfortable to sit. Given this, I think itโs about time there were free seats and maybe some form of shelter at these bigger shows, included as part of the entry price.
As for the Flightline walk fee at DX, well it’s not like Old Warden where at least you can walk around the aircraft with a guide and view them at close quarters. And you know the money you’ve paid is going to a good cause.
It does seem to me that some of the airshow organisers take the paying public for granted.
Now, on the other hand, we’ve heard a lot about the problems of increased costs and bureaucracy incurred to the owners of, in particular, historic & vintage aircraft and no doubt want them to continue to operate them for as long as possible so they can grace our skies and remind us and future generations, of all those that gave their lives so we could enjoy the freedom we do today.
But my fear is that if the airshow organisers continue to hike up prices, but at the same time take the spectators (the people that pay and support the shows) for granted and don’t give them proper value for money, I wonder how long it will be before some of these magnificent pieces of history will remain gathering dust in a hanger? ๐
A touch melodramatic maybe, but if people stop going to shows because cost and value for money is a factor, it will surely have a knock on effect on the airshow industry as a whole, which of course includes the aircraft operators and owners who rely on airshows to help towards the ever increasing running costs for their machines.
Just my 2 pence worth.
Cheers

Ummmm….
I can’t say I agree with MOTF entirely either.
The sound, yes, but it’s better than any CGI I’ve seen of WWII aircraft to date.
The sound can be fixed – I’ve plenty of good engine samples of WWII aircraft, inside and out, if Tochy needs them. ๐
As for being good for a computer game or flightsim, well, it’s the kind of quality and realism that us simmers can only dream of, and I don’t think we’ll be seeing that kind of quality for several years to come unfortunatley! ๐
What this has proved to me is that it IS possible to include non surviving and rare types of aircraft in a film that are convincing.

What a terrible thing to happen. ๐
Loosing one of your children must be so awful, but to loose two must be, well, I can’t imagine.
My thoughts are with Dan and his family.

Whatever happened to the video that you were doing? (At least I think it was you). Was it “Duel of Eagles”?? I downloaded it once before – great stuff, and great music! ๐
Daz,
That was Chris Broad.
He was using footage from IL2 Forgotten Battles. IIRC, he also uploaded some of his ‘Virtual Breitling Fighters’ team.
I’ll check his site to see if he’s uploaded it yet.

Paul, you still have to hire actors to provide voices, but an interesting idea there though. There was a cool cgi Action Man cartoon recently. And the cartoon of Starship Troopers was wickedly cool.
Ooops forgot that! ๐ฎ
I’ve just watched the clip called Wings 1. That’s cool, imagine all those interesting Japanese types at an airshow together. Tochy is creating such wonderful fantasies.
I’ve just watched that clip again and it really is quite stunning IMOH!
Just the way the light, camera shake etc has been done makes it look like real life footage! ๐ฎ
I was also impressed by the head & body movement of the Zero pilot which I thought look very life like in this film.
Could a real Corsair do that manouvre? I’d doubt it with such tight twists.
Well, it could do the stall turn no doubt, but I doubt any pilot would want do that spiral, especially at low level!
Still, it’s the only time I’ve seen a Warbird being flown like a Pitts special! :p

P.S Thanks Moggy, I didn’t realise there were two threads!
Glad you enjoyed the videos.
That Mossie clip is the best IMO. ๐
G-ASML & JDK, I agree about the sounds on the Mossie video and the voice overs on the 1942 & 45 clips. I also thought some of the manouevers on some of the other clips where abit like those in Pearl Harbour – X fighterish!
That aside, I think it goes to show what can and could be done when the effort is put into CGI and this guy obviously has a lot of talent. ๐
I think the whole concept of a total CGI war movie (be it true or fiction) is a good one having seen these clips and some of the Captain Scarlet kids show that’s on at the moment.
I guess it would be a lot cheaper to make than using real actors, props & locations and it might even make them more appealing to kids too!
Cheers

Agree!
Wonderful shots UNC. ๐
Love those Sunset shots especially that one of the P-47 parked.

Very nice Photomaker.
Thanks for the link. ๐

Spitfires & Seafires!
Well, TA805 should have flown by then and will hopefully be booked.
And how about JG891! Must be progressing nicely now?
Like Mark12, I’d hope too that Tim Manna’s Seafire XVII will be there and it would be nice if the Seafire 47 could make a trip across the pound to form a unique Seafire duo, perhaps with the Sea Fury tagging along too for good measure. ๐
And I wouldn’t mind one of the new build Me262’s either!
Oh & the TFC Fiat CR.42 and Skysport Demon would round things off nicely for me. ๐
Cheers
Paul
Steve thanks for that.
Matches the source I have.
Did you get my PM btw?
Cheers
Paul
Is there any possibility that you could post the video footage ๐ ๐ฎ
There sure is stringbag.
Just got to clear some space on my PC first before I start transfering & editing!
Also have some footage from Legends to sort through for possible upload. ๐
Cheers
Paul
Are you one half of the David Hanvey / Paul Barry duo responsible for the existing freeware FS9 Sea Fury?
Sadly no, just updating a previous FM I did for it.
It’s a very nice model and they did quite a few of them including the T.20. ๐
After watching the RNHF’s machine display at OW last weekend and the video I took of it, I felt like getting some virtual stick time in it again!
Cheers
Paul
How about these…
These two O.K?
This is all I took unfortunatley, but it was nice to see this rather interesting machine so thanks for bringing it along. ๐
And nice to have met you too, shame we couldn’t have chatted for longer but you only get a certain amount of time on the flightline walk!
Cheers

Crikey West Sussex, thats abit close to home ๐ฎ ๐
Ain’t heard anything about it, local news coverage in Sussex is poor ๐
Normally the only aircraft we get in West Sussex are the ones going to Gatwick.
Saw both accidents on the local news tonight.
Here’s the BBC report on the one near Selsey:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/southern_counties/4130226.stm
It was this Cessna 172.
Looked like it spun in judging by the wreckage. ๐
