Glad you enjoyed the video.
It was a shame you couldn’t make the show Jonathan.
It was a cracker! 😀
Shame I couldn’t upload the 512kbps version as it looks and sounds a lot better. 🙂

Jonathan Whaley perhaps?

I’ll be there hopefully along with Bradford Senior & Bradford Senior Senior! 🙂
Weather is looking good – a bit of a contrast to what it was like at Legends! 😮

Hoon The Goon
😮
The Secretary of State for Defence The Rt Hon Geoffrey Hoon MP has announced various cutbacks within the RAF, Jaguars are to go by December 2006 and one squadron of Tornados will disappear together with the RAF Regiments Rapier Missile System.
The good news is that the 4 BBMF Spits are to be rehoused at Duxford bringing DX complement to Squadron strength of Spitfires. :p
Firstly, I don’t see anything right or honourable about Geoff Hoon.
Secondly, just how are we expected to defend ourselves or go into a conflict when the government make such dramatic cutbacks to our already under strength armed forces?
This is a totally barmy situation that has more to do I suspect with bringing our armed forces into line with Europe than budget constraints. 😡
I sometimes wonder why all those who fought during WWII paid the price they did as it seems everything they laid down their lives for was a waste? 😡 😡

eddy,
They are both in crates at North Weald or possibly now Greenham Common I believe.
Not under restoration any longer as they were both completed a while ago! 🙂

Thanks Rob for posting some lovely pics.
We are very lucky yourself and others choose to share them on this forum. 🙂
Hopefully I’ll have some video footage that I can post here later on. 😉

Why?
Just why aren’t the two seat Spits appearing at Legends anymore?
When I look back at the videos of the early Legends, PV202 & ML407 seemed to feature quite a bit but from about 1999 seem to have not been booked.
Granted, PV202 has been out of commision since 2000, but the Grace Spit has been available and PV202 should be back in the air in the not too distant future.
I seem to recall reading on these boards something to the effect that they weren’t as popular with the pilots as they didn’t have quite the agility of the single seat variant, but I’ve never heard any comments from pilots to back this up? (The only thing I do recall is the late Norman Lees telling Alan Decadinet that they were more sensitive in pitch than the single seaters.)
Can someone clarify the exact reason?

Well, my Gold passes for Sunday arrived last week! 😀
Just hope the weather behaves itself!

Hi Chris
As mixtec says MS have pulled out of the hardware business altogether which is a shame. It also means that it might be hard to find a new MS Sidwinder 2 FF anywhere! 🙁
All the major sites I looked at don’t have any available althought I did find one at Amazon under the used & new section.
Here’s the link:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004Y6GA/ref=br_lf_vg_h__8/202-3420963-1209459
I didn’t look but they might have a new non FF available.
I have the FF version and I must say it’s a great stick that works very well. I wish I had bought a second one now as a spare!
I really do hope CH bring out a new FF stick as the choices for this type are a bit limited. 🙁

I believe that PL965 has always had the correct deeper lower cowling since her restoration and the photo’s posted here seem to confirm that.
In fact, I’ve just had a look through the excellent book ‘Spitfire – Flying Legend’ by John Dibbs & Tony Holmes, and in all the photo’s of PL965 she has the deeper lower cowl.
I did think that at one stage after restoration, PL983 had the deeper one too but all photo’s and video footage I’ve seen show the standard one. Interestingly she did have the early style ‘Flat’ Top cowl mentioned in another thread while 965 has the ‘bulged’ one.
Anyway thanks to all for the info and great pics. 🙂

Sorry if this has been covered before but does anyone know what was different about the Packard Merlin that required the bulge in the top of the engine cowling? I heard that this reduced stability and reduced the already poor forward visibility even more?
Also, any truth in the rumour that the Packard engined Spits were grounded for a period during the war due to a series of engine fires?
Ta 🙂

It seems that the ‘Bulged’ top cowling was also used on later IX’s with RR Merlins as well judging by the numerous Wartime photo’s I’ve seen. I’ve never heard about the reduced stability problem and I don’t think it made too much difference to the view, as it was never that good in the first place!
It’s interesting to note that all the airworthy MKIX’s today have this type of top cowling even though they may have had the original ‘Flat’ type. MH434 is a good example. I guess that over the years and even during the war they were changed at maintenance units or when in civilian hands.
It’s also interesting to note that all the wartime pictures I’ve seen of MKVIII’s, regardless of variant, have the ‘Flat’ type as opposed to the ‘Bulged’ type.
Maybe Mark 12 has something to say on this subject! 😉

Eddie,
It is for a Flight Sim, but a Redmond based one! 😉
JDK,
Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into those scale plans.
I do have good references for both aircraft and have built the FM’s, but as often is the case this data is not always included!

Very nice photo’s Mossie and welcome to the forum!
Glad you have got to grips with your new ‘Toy’!
I wish I could say the same about my attempts on Sunday at getting some good footage with my DV cam! 😮

Just bumping this one up!
I’ll ask again, does anyone know which Spit is doing the flypast this evening?
I guess maybe one that’s attending Sandown perhaps?
Unfortunately I won’t be going as I didn’t book any tickets and anyway, I’m off to Old Warden tomorrow along with Dad & Grandad. 😀
Anyway, I’ll try and keep a lookout for the Spit! 😉
