I find it all very irritating, the fact our government has more or less told us to tighten our belt, people losing or lost their jobs left right and centre over the last few years, cut backs every where, community centres, libraries closed, etc, etc ,etc yet still go ahead and spending an absolute forturne on this pointless sporting event, its an insult. I hope the sporty people are happy!! last spend report was up to £11 billion, I mean £93 million for an indoor bike track, 100’s of thousands of pounds on stupid sculpures, the security cost was reputed to be worth £238 million, its ridiculous, its SPORT for god sake!!
The world is upside down and back to front!! In regard to the Olympics itself, it would make more sense to have it in the same place every four years and the countries that take part share the spenditure so they can all play together, at least that would give value for money in terms of the facilities.
😀

Hi
I do believe we used to get a lot of our timber from Canada and North America, until various government changes at some point in the past decided to import timber from scandinavia and the baltics (around 80% of it which is rather bad quick grown softwood). Only 15% is now imported from Europe and North America, the rest is from other areas such as the UK.
I’ve replaced many a door frame in houses only 40 years old and the stud walls behind still have CANADA stamped on them and they look as new as the day they went in, all this softwood we get now is really not worth the money they charge for it.
I was in a new £350,000 new build 7 bedroom house a few years ago and the amount of movement around doors and stairs in such a short space of time since completion was terrible, I could fit my finger between the wall and stringer on the staircase, and load of nails had popped their head on the plasterboard due to the house settling, that was a timber built brick faced house.
Bought skirting a few months ago, put it in the room it was going to be installed for two days, it warped like a banana completely unusable I think it tried to return to its original tree trunk shape.

Discovery channel today, program called Gold Rush. Two guys in Alaska who run a struggling small airfield may have to sell it, so decide to take up Gold mining…Sign next to the Hangars reads
Hangers for sale!!
mmmm how do I correct that one, LOL

All that needs to be remembered when attempting to correct the use of an incorrect word is a bit of courteousness. Dont make it seems like you’re trying to get one over or make the person look stupid because of something they may not be aware of…no-one knows everything its an impossibility. Advice I would give is to always do it via a private message and let the person know in a polite way.
I did it this way twice, on an aviation website and a flight simulator website where Hanger was used. I did a brief intro of myself, explaining what I was emailing for and the difference between to two words, They didnt realise that they where using the wrong word (just like I didnt before I was corrected about the same thing on AIX). I was thanked for my assistance and the websites where changed accordingly. No issue at all.
BTW I would never correct a persons grammer, wrong usage of a word in a particular topic yes, a whole post no.
Manners and a bit of tact I think cost nothing, besides you really have no idea who is sat on the other side of the words you have been reading.

Hi,
Interesting thread, which does always tend to rub people up the wrong way, I’m not sure why though? I always like to be corrected if a mistake has been made as it further expands my knowledge.
Going back to the Hanger/Hangar question this thread started with. I used the word Hanger in Aviation terms for years until I was quite happily corrected just a few years ago over on the AIX forum. Was I upset about it…no not really, I was more than happy to be corrected because I simply see it as someone wanting/willing to help correct my use of an incorrect word.
I have not used Hanger since (unless I’m talking about a coat hanger or joist hanger :D)

Yes Sky High, that is I believe the ‘general concenus’ I would call it a theory though a theory even the science fellows only have a best guess at from what they can see or measure. It is expanding now so they say but we have no concept of what we can’t see from out little planet and what we can see is most likely a very small portion of the universe and our life as humans just isnt long enough to know what happens a billion years in the future.
Our lungs expand when we breath in to something on the scale of an atom that expanse is huge but to us its only small, then when we breath out it collapses back to its orignal size.
We could say and its as good a guess as anyones that once the universe stops breathing in it will breath out and theoretically reduce to its original size.
Wouldnt want to be around then though 😀 I dont actually beleive in the theory of the big bang anyway seems to far fetched :D;)
And as a scientist once said in a documentary…well it was something like ‘as Scientists we acually know very little, everything we work from is theory based on theory based on theory and if we remove one of the theories everything will collapse”

I’m sure the current lot would love to get rid of those, particually freedom of expression, thought and a fair trial. Would suit them down to the ground.
