Dean – sounds like you’ve already fallen under the Breighton spell! Join the Club and get involved – you’ll love it!
Any pictures of your Uncle at Breighton?
Nice đ
Hmmm⌠that doesnât bode very well ! đ … For UK fans that is.
There certainly were more than three, and it was especially nice to see MH434⌠but only the Hurricane, Buchon & Mustang are/were resident. I was trying to imply that Breightonâs only a short drive away, and with them being resident, I could go and see them at any time. I wrote it quickly at work, so maybe it doesnât scan very well⌠Incidentally, will Janie be there next year? I look forward to seeing her again.
Dean.
There were 12 Merlins at the 2004 weekend… and 11 of them flew.
We’ve had warbird ‘heavy metal’ based at Breighton for almost 10 years – sorry if anyone missed ’em! Times change and things move on. Regardless of what happens to ‘Susy’ (remember – not sold as yet) there’s still a healthy Mustang population in the UK, and I for one can’t wait for the next Breighton season… not ALL real aeroplanes have Merlins up front you know!
One point to bear in mind though is that the Buchon and Hurricane were owned by one person and the Mustang by somebody else
That’s right, as Yak 11 says, the former owner of the Buchon and Hurricane is an enthusiastic collector of pre-war types (including the Mew Gull, Arrow Active, Maggie, Aeronca etc etc)… expect to see the collection expand along those lines in future.
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes?
Sorry!
The aerial unit were also based at Breighton for a week or so, just prior to the 2005 summer fly-in (a sick ‘Nieuport’ was displayed on the flightline during the event).
Sherburn-in-Elmet’s ‘Breitling Day’ (Sunday) was breezy at times but everything flew – including RAC’s 3 warbirds and ‘Putt-putt’s’, BBMF, Sea Fury etc etc. Cold in that there breeze though!
The final format of the show worked out really well, everyone who took part and put it together were pleased as punch and really enjoyed themselves – which is what it’s all about. (Shame I couldn’t pull off my F-16 plan – maybe next summer!) These pictures really do the weekend justice, nice to see some of the lesser known types that took part too. Well done!
Lovely pictures as always Gareth, didn’t see you but I can’t have been far away!!
I do have a couple of questions:
1) Does anyone know why the RACo Mustang didnât display today, despite displaying yesterday and departing with the RACo Buchon and Hurri at the end of the show this evening?
‘Susy’ had a magneto failure on Saturday due to heat sink and although it was OK once it had cooled it was too risky too chance flying it at high temps during the display. Its normal flight home posed no probs for Taff and will not affect their planned displays at Breighton during the weekend.
Speaking of which, we will be having something of a ‘warbird fest’ ourselves at Breighton the weekend (15/16 July) – nothing like the scale of the wonderful FL but we expect to have 3 x P-51’s, Buchon, OFMC’s Spitty (plus possibly another one), Hurricane and a Corsair stutting their stuff during a planned four hour display… should be worth the entrance fee of ÂŁ10! Advert over!
I think that was me on the historic forum, thanks for the explanation and glad she got back to Breighton with no hiccups. Cheers Davski đ
Hi Ant,
‘Susy’ had a magneto failure on Saturday due to heat sink (as a result of the length of time it was held on the ground with the engine running in the heat) and although it was OK once it had cooled it was too risky to chance flying it at high temps during the display. Its normal flight home posed no probs for Taff and will not affect its planned displays at Breighton during the weekend. (Where, incidentally, we now have the OFMC’s Spitty booked for both days).
Will post this on the historix thread too…
Nice one Gareth – don’t forget your camera at the weekend!!
I like the Hurri/Buchon image too…
Can’t remember which thread mentioned the ‘Susy’ no show on Sunday but I believe they had an intermittent fault with one of the magnetos. Tony cautiously flew her home on Sunday with no further problems.
Ooohhhhhhhhhhhh – them’s good!!
I’m not sure what is required with regards attaining a C of A. I gather it flies very well and so I see no reason to doubt it will get the thumbs up in due course – I guess that there’s a prerequisite number of flying hours and ‘ticks in boxes’ needed prior to getting the permit but as far as I know we’re well on schedule.
The guy you’re refering to is ‘our Barry’ – he was marking where the stencils needed to be applied and flagging-up any blemishes/scratches etc… as you can see from the picture, all of that has now been taken in hand and it looks pristine.
You can see the Buchon at Legends and at Breighton the weekend after.
This one. The RAC one needs the 60 white victory bars added to the rudder though đ
And a photo of the real one with Schroer flying over the Agean, and of him getting out of the cockpit.
Schroer was the second highest scoring pilot in North Africa after Marseilles, and also was the top scoring Me109 pilot against 4-engined bombers with 26. His final score of 114 in only 197 missions gave him the second best strike rate in the entire Jagdflieger, and of those 114 victories, 102 were against the RAF/USAAF making him the 5th highest scorer in the West. Schroer survived the war and died in Feb 1985 aged 67.

Who owns the Auster V? Looking for one for a show…
Tony Brier – it’s a lovely restoration.
