Didn’t attend very many shows this year but flying in the jump-seat of ‘Susy’ alongside the Hurricane at the Memorial Airshow at Roudnice nad Labem will probably be my lifetime’s airshow highlight.

Very pleasing to see the RN Historix Sea Fury and Sea Hawk representing the Senior Service again. Well done chaps!

“Janie”, “BBD” and “Susy” at Breighton is always a delight – thanks guys.

BBMF anywhere and everywhere – Gawd bless you all!

But I was a bit alarmed that they seem to hammer on a few times about how dangerous flying Warbirds is. Not to sure were they got the “On average, two people per year are killed flying Warbirds” though.

I think this type of programme feels the need to make some sort of hard-hitting dynamic and sensationalist journalistic comment which unfortunately, in this instance, was totally unneccesary and not particularly useful. There was a very valid story in the mere fact that a Hollywood movie was part filmed from Breighton and I think that would have been more than sufficient fodder.

Let’s face it, the other story concentrated on listeria in railway buffet car sandwiches which, as it turned out, still fell within the government’s minimum safety limits…

The footage stretched way back to the Centenary of Flight event at Breighton (probably BBC Look North – showing BBD, Janie and the Yak 11), shame they didn’t film the Buchon as she looks now. Nice takeoff sequence with the Mustang – can only imagine that they were chasing alongside in the ‘yellow peril’ Land Rover! I agree with Jeepman re: the editorial content but the pictures were great.

Tobin’s 609 Sqn.fellow Yank Vernon ‘Shorty’ Keough is the one that has always intrigued me. He was surely the smallest fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain, if not the entire war at 4ft 10ins.But what guts,he was a pre-war professional parachutist and stunt pilot.Tom Cruise should play him instead of Billy Fiske in ‘The Few’

Hear! hear! Third cushion for Mr Cruise?!

‘Fighting – Church Fenton’ by Peter Mason (originally published 1989) contains a small chapter on 71 Squadron, including extracts from their Ops book, a couple of photo’s (formal Squadron picture and one showing Tobin, Keough and Mamedoff), and details of the notorious Brewster Buffalo incidents… RAF Church Fenton is not quite so exciting these days!

The Buchon is still at Breighton and still owned by Rob Fleming.

The Avia had been based at Sandtoft I believe – moved to Breighton about this time last year – it’s privately owned by a Club member (all resident aircraft owners are Club members) and not operated by the Company.

I was there on Sunday too, great pictures Steven. I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

One thing – I heard a rumour about a mystery plane in hanger 4 – supposed to be ultra rare and in Croatian markings…..Any ideas?

It’s an Avia FL3 – been at Breighton for a while now.

Nice pix Steven – couldn’t get over there myself (don’t ask!), nice to see superb weather at Breighton at last!

Does anyone remember ‘Lofty’s one man Luftwaffe’ in ‘Battle’ comic? Brilliant! I guess that all of this is considered a little non-PC nowadays…

‘Fraid not – the Nieuport is sickly so we asked if we could hang onto it for the fly-in, looks brilliant though (as does the Tripe in it’s movie paint). I believe that we’re dismantling the aircraft prior to it going home by road.

The Buchon was taxied today and looks tremendous…

It was a bit nippy on the airfield today, the weather further south had an impact too – still, enjoyed by everyone (apart from a NIMBY in the next village I’m told!).

Nice pix Neil – did you not see the Spitfire then??! Difficult to ID in the overcast, he dipped a wing to take a look then continued on his way…

I think that I’m right in saying that the canopy shapes were slightly different depending on which production plant the aircraft were built. There’s actually not a lot of headroom in the back of ‘Susy’ – my headset touched the top if I leant back at all – and I’m only 5 foot 6!

Nice pix Gareth, good to see you yesterday – hope that the weather holds out today!
