Gary, I do believe the acquisitions policy may now have been put on a sounder footing with input from engineering rather than the collecting policy to be based on the whims of one man. I think the realisation has come that much of what the collection holds is far too valuable to be bought and sold on the aforementioned whim.

Roger, don’t retreat–I responded at the end of a very trying day where a very good volunteer resigned over other people’s stupidity.
And I wasn’t even there or involved but as ever, I hear it all.
I apologise if you think I was curt.

Strangely enough, the passion which the collection generates never ceases to amaze me. I just wish the powers who run the place would see it.

Paul, was your sister Shazzer or Beryl..? I had two wives in Bolton for a while. Perhaps they could combine the two families and get a better claim that way.
    Yours Henry.

Well Bruce you never know who you’re talking to on the internet. I mean my name is Henry Alias from Bolton and I’ve never even been to Bedfordshire. But as Ken (sorry David :)) ) says, I agree on the vision thing, the RE-8 thing would be sensible. I’d rather try to arrange an eclipse of the sun in practical terms though.

I think a Snipe in silver would be a nice addition. Then you have the Sopwith evolution from Pup through to Snipe. i also think that one marked from 23 or 43 squadron would be nice, seeing as they were at nearby RAF Henlow in the 20’s. When the TVAL stuff was there last year, there was a real groundswell of enthusiasm from the public. Much more so than many expected.

Sadly David (or should I say Ken) and you no doubt know this, the paying public are a fickle crew. It breaks my heart to see a queue of cars leaving on a perfect Saturday night when the Edwardians are about to fly and the Spitfire has completed it’s display.

Can you make that two containers? One for the Polikapov Po2 as well, which is completely irrelevant at Old Warden in my opinion. And how about spending some of that money on commissioning TVAL to build an Albatros DVa or a Sopwith Snipe?

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they say…..

What do you think the rest of us would like to see..? However, the previous and not much missed (well not missed at all actually) aviation trustee made that a none starter by a) pretty much ignoring Gene DeMarco whan he was over with the RE-8 and the Albatros D.Va before and b) by sending him a missive–not by his own mouth, a mere colonial would be far too unimportant to be spoken to directly–that replicas weren’t wanted, desired or otherwise tolerated.

These retired Air Marshalls and assorted local gentry are of course our betters, both socially and in terms of knowledge and common sense.

So, if it is to remain a static exhibit for the next few years (and on the assumption that it’s current paintwork has no historic value) why couldn’t a ‘quick paint job’ be done on the airframe – perhaps by an SVAS team – as a tribute to Eric Brown?

    Roger Smith.

Who would you like me to send the invoice for the paint to..? And are you volunteering for it..? If you are, could you please put a costing together (in writing would be best) for paint and materials, plus the cost of access equipment, protective materials for adjacent exhibits and PPE for the operatives etc. Plus the numbers of people you intend to bring along to do the work, and what their skills are..?–preferably they will have previous painting experience. Oh and a risk assessment and method statement for how the work should proceed. Then I’ll get it put in front of the SVAS committee for approval one way or another.

And it’s a FM-2–isn’t it? So not really applicable to pre-war schemes. It approximates to a Wildcat Mk.VI in FAA service.

It makes you wonder whether Richard Shuttleworth is turning in his grave these days!

He probably has been for some time. After all, it was his private collection and he never envisaged that the lower orders with their grubby little picnics and nasty cheap Japanese cameras would be wandering all over his land taking pictures and debating what was to be done with his toys.
Remember, even when it was first opened as a charitable collection, it was by invitation only and Jacko Jackson used to tell casual visitors to ‘go away’ in no uncertain terms–if he didn’t like the look of them.

As for the Demoiselle–best not go there at all.

I would be surprised if the decision on what colour to paint it will be a concern any time before 2030, if ever.

    Make that 2032 and I’ll be seventy–if I’m lucky.
And yes Martin (D1566), it is that bad–maybe worse actually.
It was purchased on the instruction of two ex-Trustees. One now retired and one who left under a cloud last Autumn–and Bruce is VERY right in his recommendation.

U could just make the suggestion!

I could but everyone currently working there will have retired or died by the time painting the damn thing becomes an issue. In fact, unless you’re in your early twenties, I’d stop worrying too. Certainly poor old Winkle Brown won’t get to see it.

I should think it’s colour scheme is the last thing on the minds of engineering at the moment. It needs a substantial rebuild first.

    Very nice Mike.
It certainly sounds (as well as looks) wonderful.
May I ask, has it now moved from RAF Henlow to it’s new home permanently..?
    A.

Roger. The Caproni at Vigna di Valle is beautifully restored.
