I’m shocked by this news, but particularly by the thinking behind including the prone pilot Meteor and the Avro 707C on the list. As was said previously in the thread these two are surely important aircraft, and I would have thought were key aircraft for the Cosford “Test Flight” hangar? It’s been a while since I visited Cosford but that hangar is special (with some unique aircraft) and has always been a favourite of mine. I don’t know whether the intention had been to move the 707C back there from storage, but I can’t help feeling that should be it’s natural home.
I suspect it’s nothing to do with the size of the crowd, but the initial comment about setting aside the “grumbly stuff” hit the nail on the head. Some people will feel uncomfortable or hypocritical about posting on a thread such as this, so take the option of not posting at all.
Me? I recognise his impressive achievements.
Hooligan –
“The F-6D Mustang Li’l Margaret which recently arrived in Europe was involved in a take off accident at Woodchurch on Friday. The pilot/owner escaped unharmed but the aircraft is damaged.”
Many thanks for the info. I hadn’t seen anything about that before.
Very bad news, but glad to hear that the pilot is OK.

I’ve searched all the usual places for news of a “P51” incident over the weekend, but can’t find anything. Can you enlighten me please?
Thanks.
Ferocious Frankie wasn’t the only aircraft that looked good in the late afternoon sun …..

Ah, so that was you was it DCW, outside the hangar as Frankie was being pushed in. I was the scruffy sod with the compact camera taking photos from inside!

….. and the energetic Mr. Kay!

Whilst organisers have good attendance’s at airshows, I agree, it’s unlikely to change. However, this is a subject widely commented upon, so I doubt it’s just a ‘small minority’…
Maybe, rather than ‘not troubled by it’, many of those attending are ‘grinning and bearing it’. Not always one of Britons greatest traits. Let’s hope the message gets through.
Perhaps it’s commented on by the same people each year?
These threads always amuse me. The same people every year moan about the lack of variety of interesting aircraft at Legends, yet I consider myself extremely fortunate to be able to see these beautiful warbirds every July. People moan about the commentary every year, but it would be impossible to please everyone. You can’t have a show with no commentary, as the majority of people attending wouldn’t know enough about the participating aircraft to get the best from it. You can’t reduce the volume of the PA as people 20 ft from the flightline would complain they can’t hear it properly. You can’t have a soulless commentator reading out the specs. of each aircraft, yet when you have a knowledegable commentator showing real enthusiasm and passion you complain about that too!
I would like to see Melvyn Hiscock back at Legends doing the commentary. He’s knowledgeable, enthusiastic, lets us hear the aircraft themselves, but keeps us informed with appropriate information. He also has a sense of humour, which is sadly lacking in many commentators. I guess what I’m trying to say is you can’t please everyone all the time, and the regular threads which emerge on here before Legends EVERY YEAR confirm that.
I hope your “feeling” is correct. The further to the right the better!
It’ll be a very sad day when the last one makes its final flight. One of the most beautiful shapes in the sky.
Hi Charliehunt. Yes I knew that was the part you were referring to but I thought Snoopy7422 meant there are very few people around who have even heard a Napier Sabre run. I didn’t think he was talking about the F-86, but maybe I’m just getting confused myself! Ignore me. 🙂
I think Snoopy7422 was referring to the engine ….
That seems fair … no strings attached … 🙂
Melvyn, you’re a very kind man, thank you. As for the house, the kitchen needs replacing, the whole house is in need of decoration and we have a wasps nest in the loft, so go on then, it’s a deal. 🙂 I’ll tell the wife and kids later ….
Back to the subject of the thread, after Melvyn’s Rearwin of course, I’d like to see a Zaunkoenig (preferably G-ALUA to bring back happy memories of Fairoaks in the late sixties) and a Lightning (again, memories of going to displays at Benson and Abingdon as a young lad). There, I think that’s both ends of the speed scale covered!
Regarding Melvyn’s post #33, if/when you get the Rearwin flying again, I’d love to cover the full cost of a brief flight from Popham if I’m able to add to my list of types flown in!
Ian
Interesting stuff, thanks Phil.
Regarding the crew for the maiden flight, have you ever asked Harry Holmes, or George Jenks, or maybe even Tony Blackman?
