…..i can’t believe the tower still has some original fitments! Even the fireplace still has a typical MOD/WD metal dustpan beside it!!!

……………..shortly to be published on all station orders, the trade formerly classed as ground mechanic will no longer exist. With immediate effect, it is now replaced with the new trade of air mechanic. Additional volunteers with a ‘head for heights’are required!

    Ref Yarnold sangar

    hi gang!

……….you should’ve seen how much money Sqn Ldr Yarnold got for ‘his’ idea under the ‘ideas and inventions scheme’! It annoyed a lot of people, and he got quite a few grand out of basically re-introducing a typical 2ndww pillbox!!
They were totally useless, and it’s only purpose was for use as a decoy sangar – a lot of us preferred the proper ones made by station personnel out of stone/concrete/sand filled metal n wood ammo boxes, corrugated iron, sandbags, n railway sleepers – oh and don’t forget the camnet over it too!

    Hi gang!
many thanx for replies! I’ll be showing the joys of mag filling! Starting with a box of 1’000rds (not actually going to load even a 1/4 of ’em) to the final ‘full’ magazine – should be interesting!
just visited a site http://www.ima-usa.com and they only have 47rd mags, but they do have repro speed loaders which attached to the drums for filling by 5 rd clips! They also do repro air version vickers guns. Found another site which also does repro metal air version vickers guns, and that is http://www.repligun.com – both these companies are in the states!

………….i think the locals should be grateful – they have cheap exMQ’s which were left abandoned for years after the yanks pulled out. Done many an exercise at kemble with TCW in the RAF.
As i’ve said before, if you move next door to an airfield what the hell do they expect – put up with it or move away!! They should thank themselves lucky that the site hadn’t been turned into an immigration centre, or a prison!

    ref ghost stations books

    😀

……..i personally have found the books to be the biggest load of s*** going!
I never got past a few of them either, as the guy was so far up his own backside, it was unbelievable! One of the things that really narked me was how he kept on going on about himself being ex P & SS (RAFP), etc etc etc.

FACT:- P & SS (p*** and wind as we called them) DO NOT investigate hauntings!

Still, if you’re sat on the loo and miserable……pick up one of the aforementioned books – it’s guaranteed to make you laugh!!

    Duxford

…typical of Duxford ain’t it! The money they rake in, and the money they spend – it’s annoying!! They’ve been offered a period hangar with a genuine provenance, and they turn it down! What’s the matter with them? Not enough shiny metal, or ‘sorry mate – not futuristic enough’ (Wa****s).

There’s 2 genuine RFC & 1 genuine RNAS airfields left in the UK from the 1stww period that are literally complete, and are just rotting away – what the hell is wrong with this country?

These are ideal for preservation/conservation, and would make fantastic additions to the musem listings such as duxford, chiltern open air museum, etc. They are quite a few 2nd ww airfield museums, etc, but absolutely nought for the 1stww!!

    belfast hgr at aldergrove

    ……….wessex,

that’s probably why it’s not recognised as a belfast hgr then – too much modernisation of it, and the fact that it was so severly damaged thereby reducing it to a 1/3rd of it’s size!

    re; belfast truss hangars

    🙁
……..there are no belfast truss hangars in existence anymore at raf aldergrove. However, the former guardroom (now occupied by P & SS Northern Ireland) is one of two still remaining and original 1stww period buildings on the station.
The former 72 sqn hangar (opposite the former guardroom) is of 1stww period, but is not a belfast hangar!

p.s. was stationed at aldergrove 1992 to 1995

Can anyone remember the RAF one off special from the BBC back in the late 70’s or early 80’s called ‘Airforce’ ?? Well, to cap it, it was a drama about the modern future Air Defence of the UK which showed the RAF only having one air station and a squadron of fighters!

There were no helicopters, but it did still retain the RAF Regiment for some unknown reason! A very interesting film, and a probable insight into the UK’s future air force!
