….treat MH for what it is – a complete joke! Take everything they see, do, and say with a large pillar of salt. The programe is absolute c-rap!!
tim
….and about time too! Petes a decent bloke, thoroughly experienced, and knows what he’s doing. Finally getting someone who knows what the RAF is all about, has a care & a passion for the service, and will steer this ‘wobbly’ ship into much calmer waters!!
tim
…..you can always paint your name on the back of the items too, thereby making sure the object is definately yours – just a thought!

Higuys,
many thanks indeed – yes, i do live just down the road from aldergrove, but i don’t think the PABX would appreciate a call about ensign raising and lowering times at this time of night! Besides, most ‘erks’ below the rank of corporal wouldn’t know, unless of course, they were remustered from the now disbanded GD trade!
tim
😀
….would be nice if one of the ‘lancs’ was donated to RAF Scampton, and set up as a ‘gate guard’. This would be a fitting tribute to not only the station, but also to 617 Sqn in general. It would certainly put the station more on the tourist trail.
…..and as an addition, two could be donated to East Kirkby to keep company with ‘Just Jane’. Imagine turning up one day, and you see THREE lancasters sitting there!

😀
Rob
…..well done to one and all!
Good to see the ‘forefathers’ of the RAF being portrayed in a such a good setting! Excellent photies chum!!
tim
……he obviously didn’t like the price of their tea :D!!!!

….stuff calling one of the carriers HMS Prince of Wales! I believe it should be called HMS Swordfish!
If the yank fish’eads can fly B-25’s off a modern Carrier as a celebration, why can’t our navy do the same with a swordfish???

….it’s typical of our uk government & the politicians! We spend millions of taxpayers money on general crap, but we can’t be bothered/won’t do a simple thing as this. Yes, i can understand if the a/c is buried 80 odd feet down, but i can’t understand why there isn’t a civilian contractor employed by the MOD to undertake recoveries such as this!
I can remember the scrap compound at RAF Brize Norton in the late 80’s where we had new a/c tyres, NBC suits, mess tins, aircraft seats, etc, (enough modern spares & obsolete spares to start a 3rd world air force) waiting to be collected by the scrapman. Everything was brand new, still sealed in wrappers, boxes, etc, but when it came to getting a pair of socks changed with holes in, i was told i’d be billed for damaging government property!
Hospitals are being closed down all over the country due to underfunding, but they still somehow find the money to buy sculptures/bronzes for putting outside the entrances to ‘brighten’ the place!!
You only have to look at the burials of recovered crews in france, etc. The allies send representatives, members of their forces, politicians, etc, whilst we send next to ****** all because it costs money.

Hi VX,

hope this helps,

….if you get the chance, you gotta see the raf apprentices museum! it’s in one of the hangars, and is quite fascinating! Not just for the apprentices pieces that were made, but also the early apprentices uniforms. They’ve got kit layouts, room layouts, etc. It really doesn’t do itself justice – you have to see it!
tim
😀
Chris,
………..have you thought about getting a nissen hut from the local area? Try to get hold of a copy of the airfield plan/s, and this will also show you the dispersed sites. It may be worth your while going around them, and there could be the possibility of finding one. After that, it’s just finding out who the landowner is, and approaching them!

😉
………….f~*k me!! What an incredible, and fantastic piece of engineering!

Hi,
….your 2nd photie shows the station armoury. The majority of armouries are seperate buildings! The ‘squares’ you see at the front are the ‘hatches’ where weapons were issued out from.
The 3rd photie is a guardroom. Many pre-war stations had more than one guardroom! The main guardroom is obviously beside the main gate, but this one would depend where abouts on the station it was built. Obviously, it would have served other purposes such as a bulk naafi store – but there are no steel bars on the windows for it to have served this purpose! One old guardroom that i saw in the raf was originally a guardroom, but was at the time being used at the stations printing section!
hope this helps,
tim
howz about stow maries aerodrome in essex, the sole remaining and largely intact genuine 1stww airfield anywhere in the UK!
