    Hi gang!

tells yah what – give me a sheet of blank aluminium, a nice selection of airfix/humbrol paints n brushes, a colour postcard of the station crest (kings crown or queens crown – i really don’t mind which), £50.00…….and i’ll knock one out for yers all!!

Reminds me of the station sign i nicked from RAF Debden years back – wasn’t worth diddly squat, even the binmen didn’t want it!!

    hi gang!

just remembered, an ex girlfirend of mine lives in driffield village, and i can remember that the former officers married quarters are now being lived in as normal ‘civilian’ houses. The former quarters are typical of the 1930’s georgian style and are quite impressive – if i remember correctly, the property developer(s) bought them for a pittance then flogged them off at vastly inflated prices!

The only conselation of this is that they are now still being used, and therefore ‘preserved’!

    Driffield

Driffield is still retained by the MOD (Army), albeit for the small enclosure which is used as accomodation fo the army cadet force.

My brother was based at driffield when part of the Junior Leaders Regiment (RCT), and i was at Leconfield (just down the road on a signals course).

What people tend to forget is the vast amount of monies needed to restore these places and to continue their running – i for one would very much love to see a whole airfield preserved as it was (and i’m not talking duxford with its variety of modern buildings). If a place could be preserved in the way that has happened with ‘just janes’ location, then it would be a marvellous place!

I think the best way to start would be to restore a ‘communal site’. This in turn would generate income, including renting it to living history groups for week long events etc.

    Hi gang!

If an organisation can remove delapidated bldgs and relocate them to a new home, then why can’t the same be done for airfield buildings?

It appauls me that those in powers of high position can spend millions of taxpayers money on crap, but cannot be bothered to do something about the heritage around us that is fast disappearing.

Duxford is a good case of an original 1stww aerodrome that has gone thru the expansion period, thru WW2, and into the 60’s, and has been a crowd puller since it was ‘rescued’. The former RNAS Eastchurch has now been released from the prison services mitts, and it is only thanx to them that the station survived. this will hopefully be an incredible site and museum in the long term, with hopefully flying displays taking place too – i’d love to see something like Old Warden in the south of England. Stowe Maries aerodrome, though considered a ‘quiet’ station compared to the likes of Hainault farm (which is also still relatively intact and used by light industry today) is still relatively intact too, and could be turned into an incredible museum dedicated to the RFC, etc,.

The bods who use the site at present, fly remote control a/c there, and though the owner of the site passed away last year, nobody knows what will happen to it when the dust has settled, and it’s been decided by the family what to do with it, but from what i’ve managed to find out so far, is that the site is relatively intact, one of the hangar bases is now someones house, and a gentleman runs a garage business from the former Officers mess, thereby keeping the local scroates/vandals away!! it would also be a delight to see a former RFC aerodrome ‘brought back to life’ and put to good use. There are many frmer sites which may only have the odd one or two bldgs left on them in poor condition, but surely a way to preserve them would be to relocate them to a site such as Stow Maries, Eastchurch, etc.

The only way i can think of getting a site such as Stow Maries preserved for future generations would be to contact those organisations who have taken over places like East Kirkby, the former RAf technical site (also a RAF museum)& whose name has slipped my mind for the moment, Eden camp, etc, and to see what they say & how they did it!

    Hiya Lee!

Damned good effort so far – i like it! Could you suggest to the shop staff that they get some of the reprint flying manuals in? You know the pilots notes publications!

    all the best,

    RAF Museum Hendon

    Hi Rob,

hereiwth the photies of one of the many m/c’s used by the RFC. The m/c’s were retained in their civilian colours, and from the black n white photies of vehicles i’ve seen, they do seem to be in different shades!

I’ve got some photies of restored 1stww period vehicles in matt green, bronze green, and satin/gloss green.

    Re: Irelands neutrality

    🙂
    Hi gang!

Have been reading the above posts which have intrigued me, but to add to the fray, there is an excellent softback book out in various bookshops on the coastal defence of the whole of Ireland, including it’s ports. what a lot of bods do not know is that during WW2/’the emergency’ (for those in Eire), British troops of the Royal Artillery & infantry were based in a few of the coastal defence forts/batteries. The purpose of this was to not only train the Irish Defence Forces, but to predominantly provide protection and cover to all Royal Navy ships (including British merchants), that were moored in the coastal loughs such as lough swilly.

The book also shows a couple of photos of british soldiers marrying local irish girls in Eire!

In the book on the history of the Irish Air Corps, the authors do state that RAF aircraft which had landed in Ireland were also pressed into service as part of their air force, including a few american aircraft too!

Hope this wee snippet gives a bit more knowledge & info about Britains involvement with Ireland during WW2!

    ‘Flyboys’

….Aside from the aircraft being used, does anyone know what will happen to the uniforms and equipment that is being used, especially the huts and Bessonau hangar???????

Love the photies taken at RAF Halton, very very authentic setting!
