The CAA used the 748 for testing both pilots and the approach facilities of civil airports. I remember seeing them based at Stansted. The RAF used their version (Andovers) to test the military airfield equipment.

Another different shape for Duxford’s sky! The flight testing can be done in the better weather of the West Coast. It could only sit and shiver in a hangar over here!

The Duxford Aviation Society are restoring a Ambassador. Perhaps they can help?

That fly past photo is awesome! Hornets and Furies.
Just imagine the noise (music) 🙂
Great photos.

The last mention I saw on here was that the wheels had sunk into the ground and the airfield was after getting them moved. 🙁

Thanks for that Airbedane. I wasn’t sure if my leg was being pulled. I suppose that’s why they had folding wings. 🙂

Peter, it was only a minor mishap, thankfully. There is a full report on here:- http://www.airshows.co.uk/reviews/2004/southend/vrt1.htm

About 10 years ago I stopped overnight at a B&B in South Yorkshire. I can’t remember the exact location now, but it was near the Humber bridge. The farmer told me the Buccs used to be towed along the main road from the factory to the airfield, usually early in the morning. Was this the case? Or perhaps just the first prototype?

There is a service and flypast in London on the Sunday nearest to Battle of Britain day on the 15th September every year. On big anniversaries like the 50th it is on the day its self. Perhaps this could be the best day.
A service at St. Clements in the Strand, a march to the new memorial, a dedication and a small flypast on the 15th would seem just right to me.
