Oh yes, Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Not too many maid Marions in Doncaster I can tell you! Seriously, that name is very misleading Robin Hood is associated with Sherwood Forest and Nottingham not Doncaster!
Er, no it isn’t, particularly if you happen to come from that part of the world. Look on a map and you’ll see that Sherwood Forest is actually just as close to Sheffield and Doncaster as it is to Nottingham.
How much is Thomsonfly being paid by Coventry to mount operations from this heliport?
TUi now operates CVT.
I know that BA would face many constraints in Africa, particularly at places like Freetown which has security issues and poor infastructure, also I think part of the reason BA ignores such destinations is they arent particularly fashionable or trendy.
Neither BA, GB Airways nor BMed necessarily choose to fly on routes because they are fashionable or trendy (e.g. Detroit, Bishkek or Dusseldorf), they do so because there is sufficient demand for them to do so. SNBA, AF and TAP likewise serve destinations where there is sufficient demand. Demand has to be regarded from a pan-European perspective these days; if a passenger wants to fly from Brussels to Yerevan he is likely to have to fly via London. If a passenger wishes to fly from Manchester to Banjul (scheduled) he would probably have to change in Lisbon.
…or no strawberries for the premier pax ’til after take-off
TAP still operate a lot of colonial routes too.
Superb pics – really like the landing shots at EWR and LAS! Hope that you had a good holiday 🙂
I’d rather have Peanuts or Pretzels than some inedible friggin All Day Deli…
…especially when the water has leaked and soaked everything (as mine had, and I was refused a replacement as there weren’t any spares) 🙁
To be fair, illusions of gyms, bowling alleys and swimming pools on the A380 were slightly over the top.
Anyone recognise this and have similar memories?
Yes, flight DA2131 MAN-LEI (a 732) 16 May 1986 is a poignant memory as this was my first flight. Next was on a TriStar (flight KT376) MAN-TFS in 1987.
Its all about numbers.
An Airline will not start up a route or continue a route when the PAX number will not support it.Clearly you have no understanding of this concept and feel airlines should operate wherever, regardless of pax number.
If you were an airline CEO Danairboy, your airline would never make it past a month old. Over expanding your routes and developing huge overheads with free meals and sweets.
Agreed 100%. People have to remember that BA was privatised well before other European carriers, so the notion of flying to former colonies went out of the window a long time ago.
Two more points:
(i) SNBA flies to the likes of Kigali and Kinshasa on a weekly or twice weekly basis. BA prefer more regular frequencies to achieve better economies of scale;
(ii) If a UK passenger wanted to fly to Lima or Kigali, it would be possible to do so via Madrid or Brussels. In the same manner, if a Spanish or Belgian passenger wanted to fly to Sydney he’d more than likely have to fly via London or Frankfurt.
Me? No, never been to Belgium.
Juan José Hidalgo of Air Europa
I do not care how old the flight atendant is, however, I would prefer a nice big strong one who will be able to pick me up and haul me to safety, should the need arise.
I take it you mean of the female variety? 😉 😀
Yes Bcal were strong in West Africa and S America and operated to far more detinations that BA do at present. Lima was definitely served and as you say were both Freetown and Banjul for many years.
BCal was the flag carrier to Latin America and West Africa, along with North Africa and the southern states of the USA. I guess it’s all to do with the profitability of the route these days, not whether it’s prestigious. I mean, why fly direct from London to Lima when BA can (and does) offer a connection with Iberia in Madrid (bearing in mind, BA has a shareholding in Iberia). Same goes for Qantas.
Aren’t Airbus also developing a flip-up seat (similar to cinema seats) to permit easy access to window seats from the aisle? That would be innovative, but it doesn’t look promising for the future of airlines increasing the amount of legroom they afford in cattle class 🙁
