There is an outside chance that parts of AN529 WP-C may still exist in the desert (force-landed intact Nov 8 1941) on a raid to Tobruk…

    Maybe, probably not…http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=28004

Its quite interesting actually.. it was the only B-17D to survive the war and thus the only ‘d’ model left.

There was at least one other which was an instruction airframe for a few years after the war. I haven’t got the info to hand (never do…) but I think it was scrapped in the early 50s. – Nermal

Is anyone planning/hoping to recover it before it’s totally gone back to the elements?

I’d imagine that if it was easy to recover then they’d have taken more of it back then. Some of the pictures seem to imply that it was shot down…;) – Nermal

Apparently many years ago, 4 tails could be seen almost in a direct line with the runway.

Probably the last thing you wanted to see if you were coming in with the sort of problem where you could end up in the briney with them…;) – Nermal

What Mk were the six Lancasters left in Russia after crash landing on Op Paravane in 1944? Anyone any idea what happened to them?

    Wouldn’t have thought they’d be Mk.IIs.

Stealing it would undoubtably cause problems for the more law abiding sections of this hobby, in the same way that some members of the popular newspaper reading section of society might equate aircraft wreckage recovery with body snatching. Its all about image, and few can afford to have a bad one – Nermal

As there is a general election looming, should we consider voting for Ruprecht as the next Queen of England?

anything can be saved if you have enough time and money to do so i live not too far from MAAM (Mid Atlantic Air Museum) i dont how many of you are familiar with the project they’ve undertaken and what they had to start with but they are in the process of returning a Northrop P-61 Black Widow to the air so yes your Lightning can be saved hardest part is going to be getting an engine for her if the DOD will let you have one IT REALLY BURNS ME UP THOUGH TO SEE SOME OF THE RESPONSES THAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN IT MAKES ME SICK TO THINK THAT THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HISTORIC AIRCRAFT OF WWII I CHALLENGE SOMEONE TO SAVE IT EVEN IF THEY CAN’T DO ANYTHING WITH IT AT PRESENT AT LEAST FIND IT A HOME I DON’T KNOW THE NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION I’M SURE SOME OF YOU CHAPS DO SOMEONE GET IN TOUCH WITH THE GROUP THAT OPERATES TWO TAXIABLE LIGHTNINGS SEE IF THEY CAN SAVE THIS RARE MK2 WHAT IS IT WITH ME AND MKII/2’S LOL

So you want everyone to know you haven’t bothered to read the whole of this thread, just the bits where people have said that it can’t be done?
The reason it can’t be done is, as put many times above, that the owner is not interested in selling it – I know next to nothing about this aircraft but with so many people writing that they have tried and failed to secure its future I guess we must resign ourselves to waiting. Stealing it is not an option, I believe, so until the owner gives permission for it to be saved it will continue to rot away.

Let’s all remember that it is not Discovery Wings that actually make the programmes but a variety of production companies, some better than others. Discovery Wings are just the outlet and have little input into the programmes.

But they might do better if they were more picky about the kind of programmes they transmit. What is it doing for their reputation when the only times it gets mentioned here is for silly mistakes or glaring inaccuracies? – Nermal
