Someone ask why doesn’t a NASCAR driver like Jeff Gordon or Jr go drive for F1 I can answer that with one simple work Money. These guys make far more Money driven NASCAR then they would ever with F1.

Money might be a word, but doesn’t the fact that they usually come over from racing in America and fail to impress in formula one enter into it anywhere? Montoya is here, sure, and didn’t Villeneuve? But Michael Andretti is a prime example: had his star shone then he wouldn’t have been allowed to sulk away like he did.
The two types of racing are different and it is useless to compare them like we are. – Nermal

Sounds like a modern military question to me.
The RAF withdrew from Asia long before the F16 came into service and I can’t imagine any reason to use them rather than fly whichever interceptor was in service at the time out there (or maybe ship it in the case of the Lightning). – Nermal

The DH Moths used by the Fleet Air Arm were silver until the start of the war, then the survivors were probably camouflaged.
The Tiger Moths used were mainly camouflaged at first, green/brown with yellow undersides as per RAF regulations since they were just about all from RAF contracts – the exceptions being those civilian versions that were impressed. Later they became silver, yellow, etc – training colour schemes being fairly standard. It would be highly doubtful that any training aircraft would be painted extra dark sea grey, dark slate grey, and sky, since they would not normally be expected to be in a combat area over water…
Think the FAA used Tiger Moths up until the very late 1960s. – Nermal

No, it (you are referring to the MiG29K right?) is not V/STOL, but I have seen it described as capable of STOL. Also, it seems that the harrier’s capacity for Vertical take off is rarely used in operations as it consumes a lot of gas. I suppose this is what necessitates the ski jump apparatus. Point is can’t the MiG 29 avail itself of this same apparatus? Apparently, it is undergoing trials on the Kuznetsov using STOBAR apparatus (isn’t Viraat the same?)

No, I am referring to the ramp on Invincible, etc, which is possible a bit too steep and/or the available runway too short for conventional aircraft to take advantage of it. The Shar still needs some element of vertical thrust dialed in to get off the ground when using the ramp I believe, so maybe you should post your question on the modern military forum where they might understand some of your terms (Kuznetsov? STOBAR?).;) -Nermal

    Hi,

I don’t want to side track this thread, but I have a question that is similar. Could a MiG 29K (the latest variants for the IN), with increased thrust, folding wings, smaller airframe etc be used on the Invincible? If modifications would be required, would they be major or something relatively simple? These are general questions from a layman, so expert opinions are welcome.

    kind regards,
    USS.

Would it benefit from the ski ramp as used by Sea Harriers? Is it VSTOL?
    Somehow I doubt it…;) – Nermal

What is the wingspan of a landing F14?
What was the maximum wingspan the Ark Royal could comfortably accept for landing and/or take off?
What is the landing weight of an F14?
What was the maximum weight the Ark Royals wires could take on landing?
What was the maximum weight the Ark Royals cat could accommodate?
Was the mirror landing system on the Ark Royal adjustable for use by other types or just those types in FAA service?
Was it possible that this event might just have been a touch and go? – Nermal

Also more documentries for a change too would be a nice change.

They cost too much, take too long to film, and are hit or miss with the fickle public.
Remember the one with the meerkats – yay! But now all animal docs try to capture that pathos and the viewing public want something different: the TV companys are churning out programmes all made to the same template, and only a few directors are willing to break the cycle.
And advertising is difficult to sell in documentries: advertisers want high precentage point programming at peak viewing and while they are not getting this at the moment, they will certainly not take chances by allowing something different that might lose what they have to be shown instead. – Nermal
