It departed! The wing drop at the top of the loop is because the wing stalled, from that point onwards the pilot was a passenger until he got enough airflow over the wing (near the bottom of the dive) to “unstall” the wing. The second roll was a consequence of the first.
One can argue however that the pilot had left himself with enough of a safety margin because he didnt end up in a smoking hole in the ground. That said he shouldnt have put himself or the aircraft in that position in the first place.
The important thing here is that the pilot realises how close he came to disaster and that lessons are learnt.
As the aeroplane goes over the top of the loop, you can see there is only just enough speed, as he rolls out you see the nose fall away slightly as he enters the second roll. It is while in this second roll the aeroplane departs while inverted,
Well, not quite. The aircraft actually departs controlled flight while nearly vertical. As the pilot is attempting to pull through the top of the loop he pulls through the buffet into an accelerated stall. The aircraft then begins to spin, as I described before. The spin begins to develop inverted, before a recovery is executed.
This is clearly NOT a cuban 8, as you wouldn’t even think of beginning the roll to the upright until the nose had tracked through approx. 45 degrees on the down line.
At least that’s what a certain American Sea Fury pilot told me…
Sitting in the presence of a well known display pilot, I am well informed that this is a loss of control at the top of a loop resulting in a normal spin that turns inverted before recovery is executed. The pilot is lucky that he had enough altitude to recover from this bonehead maneuver. He entered into the loop without enough energy to complete it.
He did an excellent job recovering the aircraft and saving himself in the process, but he shouldnt have put himself and his aircraft in that position in the first place. Irresponsible flying, plain and simple.
This day, however the gods were smiling on him.
Thanks MM
Superb news. Any idea who the pilot was?

Cracking shot. I have one just the same, we must have been standing next to each other.
Yep 🙂
He was still grinning when he called me this afternoon. 😀
Thanks for posting the pictures.
I dont have a web page and have no intention of setting one up. I merely use the free space I get with my package to host the pictures I put up here.
Nice suggestion though.
The solution is for us to clearly mark threads with images in and for people who dont want to view them not to open them. Simple really.
Cracking stuff chaps. Glad you made it through the storms.
I’d rather people were realistic myself.

No, not sure at all now; could have been Alan Walker. My page of the masterplan got a bit wet!
It Fairford alright, thats a Portugese Puma in the background. That should help date it.
….BUT will the CAA allow it to fly??
They wouldnt have got the Lottery grant if the CAA weren’t supportive of the proposals.
Spiffing dear boy
