‘another british bomber’ !!!
They lost their elder brother in “another British bomber”…… What is so difficult about saying the word “Halifax”. Lets just let the BBC erase every British WWII aircraft from history except Spitfires and Lancasters.
Cheers BBC.
my sentiments exactly !!!
statistics –
Lancaster – 7,377 built
Halifax – 6,178 built
i feel like i’ve been on a personal crusade to keep the memory of the HANDLEY PAGE HALIFAX alive – so thanks for your comment Paul – i appreciate it
varsity/valetta
it was one or the other !!
my comment on use of this a/c instead of a more appropriate early wartime type is based on the surmise that if RED BERET was able to use colour film of WELLINGTON a/c (film made i noted in 1954) why couldn’t the makers of COCKLESHELL HEROES (1955) be similarly perspicacious .
this has little to do with the ‘we can do it better now’ .
wasn’t it MARK TWAIN who opined that one should never let the facts get in the way of a good story ?
wrong choice of a/c – dreadful acting on the part of some of the cast – let this ‘good story’ down – in my opinion at least !!
watch it on BBC IPlayer to refresh memories ! (screened BBC2 Thurs 27 Dec)
Halifax NOT Lancaster
well spotted SADSACK
P/O CW Panton (RAF) was KIA when his 433 RCAF Squadron HALIFAX HX272 was shot down on the NUREMBURG raid
Squadron base was RCAF SKIPTON ON SWALE
flog it
nice to listen to FRED PANTON talking about his brother CHRIS (KIA Nuremburg 31 03 44) and showing some photographs .
there was no mention of the fact that his brother was flying with 433 (RCAF) HALIFAX Sq from SKIPTON ON SWALE HX272 .
the war lover
like many films of its type the flying scenes were acceptable – but the acting was deplorable ! whoever told MICHAEL CRAWFORD his american accent was OK ?
when so much time and effort was spent ensuring accuracy of a/c etc why were the female fashions so ignored ? it was like a time warp into the early 1960s ! see photograph attached !!!
spit/hurri etc shackletons at gibraltar in the early 40s !
having pointed out inconsistencies in choice of a/c in historical circumstances i did notice that in the film THE SILENT ENEMY screened this week on UK tv GIBRALTAR appeared to have had a delivery of AVRO SHACKLETONS …….
hardly a high note in the career of LAURENCE HARVEY
but who would notice when the film creaked from one cliche to another anyway
a devil may care diver , a handful of matelots smoking on the dockside , DAWN ADAMS as the dragon WREN , SID JAMES , a litter of puppies , sentimental portrayal of italians
how could HARVEY bring himself to be involved in such trash ?
spitalgate ?
the identity of the camp was not revealed unfortunately
any clues from the buildings in the background ?
choice of actors
can’t watch this film because of JUNE ALLYSON !!!!! am i the only person in the world who does not warm towards her ?
not surprised this was james stewart’s least favoutite films !!
