Late last year I posted about Airfix appealing for anyone who had any of their original box art who would be prepared to loan it for an exhibition at the RAFM. Looks like they have decided to expand this to include the actual kits as well.

[QUOTE=trumper;1936251]Here is a video from the Defiant restoration, looks lovely i just hope she is going to be better illuminated than she used to be.

Interesting, a couple of years ago Flypast ran an article on this restoration & in it they mentioned that a DVD was planned to be produced documenting the project.
Anyone know if this is still in the offing ?

    Airfix to stage art exhibition

Airfix have announced that they are planning to hold an exhibition of their original box art at the RAF museum Hendon next summer.

They are looking for anyone who may have some of the original paintings in their personal collections that would be willing to loan them for the duration of the event.

    A bit more info here,

Stunning pictures, thanks! Good to see another almost extinct type recovered in such good condition. Do you know if they found the nose section too?

The second picture in this link shows the nose section wrapped up in netting on the back of a truck.

The first human to set foot on another world !

Just think about that statement for a moment.

RIP Neil, you certainly had “the right stuff”.

I have been unable to locate a source for this edition even on the “Commando” web pages. Anyone any suggestions?

My advice would be to keep an eye on “Evil-bay” or any local second hand book shops or local comic marts although the dealers at these tend to mostly deal in American super hero comics.
One good dealer used to be “The Book Palace” in London but I think they no longer deal in Commando but they could be worth a try, look them up on the web & give them a call.

    Nice cover art.
The ever reliable Steve Holland index says that War #1629 is a reprint but looks like he did’nt have the info about which issue it was a reprint of as in place of that infomation it has a question mark. There are a few like this in the book but given the sheer number printed of all the various titles its understandable.
Looks like you may have found the missing issue with AA #186 but without a copy i cant confirm this.

Thanks for that ‘Sage’, that was just the info I was after.

I’ve also recently come across a BPL story, #1629 called ‘Fiery Whirlwind’ it has the same cover art work as that on AAPL #186 War-Hungry Whirlwinds. Does anyone know if it is the same story with a different title, or the same artwork for two different titles? I’m hoping its the former case rather than the latter! 🙂

    Thanks guys.

    Paul

Air Ace #186 was the first publication of “War Hungry Whirlwinds” but according to Steve Holland’s Fleetway picture library index Vol 1, Battle #1629 was a reprint of War #218 entitled “Strike silent”, a Commando story (the soldier, not the comic) not Whirlwinds or even aviation.
There is currently a Battle #1629 for sale on “evil bay” that confirms this title.
Can you post a scan of the cover ?

“Whirlwind” was reprinted in the “Tally-Ho” collection and “Fire over England” was included in the “All guns blazing” book, but there were no Whirlwind stories in “Bandits”. Hope this helps.
Incidentally, the 4 new collections are out, I picked up the “Bombs away” title lunchtime in my local Waterstones, something to read over Easter if SWMBO dosent have me decorating all hours.:(

The opening scenes of “Mosquito squadron” with three mossies flying low crossing the coast to Ron Goodwin’s main title theme.

Also the scenes of Robert Mitchum being checked out in the F86 in “The Hunters”

I love seeing these underwater wrecks, there is just somthing about them that appeals.
I wish someone would produce a book on this subject.
Would love to see your footage Firebex if you can find it.
