The press release says that they are going to rebuild these to running condition, I wonder if they would be in the market to trade a couple to TFC for their Beaufighter (assuming they are the right type) ?

Loved the Commanders last words on exiting the shuttle “Elvis has left the building !”
Not quite “One small step” but appropiate considering the circumstances.
Flying one is an absolute no-no. It would not be allowed by the US, the restoration would cost an arm and a leg and no-one would accept the mantle of design authority, to name but a few significant reasons.
Anon.
Are you saying that they would’nt allow a Civilian one to fly outside the US ? as I believe the Collings foundation in the states fly one as part of their Vietnam memorial flight.
There’s finally been some news of some new Commando collections in their 50th anniversary year.
Unlike the previous Commando reprint books which were true doorstops with 10 or 12 stories each and which retailed around the £15 mark, these new books will have three stories in each and a £4.99 price point. They will also be published the same size as Commando as opposed to the 125% size of the thicker books. Pity that they have dropped the larger size but better that than nothing at all.
Each of the four books has a theme – Action Stations! will be naval warfare, Tally Ho! will be aerial warfare, Achtung! will pit British troops against the Germans
Whilst Banzai! unsurprisingly will set them against the Japanese.
With 208 pages each, Amazon lists their publishing date as 7 July 2011.
Mosquito memorial charity auction
Just been sent an e-mail about this so I thought I would share it with the like minded people here.
A painting of Mosquito NF MkX111 MM550 has been painted by top comics artist John Higgins to raise money for charity.
John’s picture will be auctioned locally at a fund raising event on 19th February 2011 to raise money for the development and up keep of the Chaucer Memorial in Rustington in West Sussex.
Any bids before this date for this painting would be most welcome: the highest pre-auction bid so far is £100.
“It’s just a casual email auction up to the actual live auction on the 19th February,” John told downthetubes. “Whoever wants to bid on it can just email me with a bid above £100.
“I will reply to each email giving a weekly up date on the bids to the 19th when we would have the highest 10 read out after the live auction. I want to at least see if we can get a bit of internet interest.”
The money would be used to maintain the memorial in remembrance of all who died in World War 2 but specifically for this incidence when a small rural village experienced the impact of war at first hand and five people were killed
The Full story as well as a picture of the painting can be found here.

Sad news
This was posted today on the Commando web site….
“The Commando office has been deeply saddened by the news from Argentina that we have lost a friend and valued member of the team with the untimely death of Josè Maria Jorge.
Best known for his excellent aircraft work, Josè Maria could turn his hand to any theme and had been working with Commando for 42 years. During that time many authors and editors were delighted as he realised their ideas on paper. Readers too loved his style, remarking on its accuracy and detail.
Josè Maria’s last complete book was No 4329 “Divided Aces” which came out in September to co-incide with the 70th anniversary of the Battle Of Britain. Set around Edinburgh, it attracted plenty of attention in the local press as you can see here.
It is sad indeed that it would turn out to be his swansong.”
This is really sad news as along with Ian Kennedy’s covers he was the last stalwart for accurate & dynamic artwork that Commando had.
Condolences to his family & friends.
If I recall, Roland Beamont made some strong comments about industrial action that delayed Typhoon (Or Tempest ?) production, I can’t recall the exact details..
I believe that this is covered in either the “Typhoon & Tempest story” or “The Hawker Typhoon & Tempest” books, I seem to recall a photo and text recounting the industrial unrest and being surprised as this was the first time I had read anything about strikes during wartime.

…….. and if the show is planned better than is usually is, there should always be an aeroplane in front of the crowd displaying.
Over the years I have been to dozens of airshows at lots of different locations and I can honestly say that Legends is probably the best organised show I have seen.
As for aeroplanes being in front of the crowd, with the exception of the mass take off for the finale this is always the case & Steven Gray fills in the gap whilst its forming up so I dont see where this opinion comes from.
Contrast this with a show like the one my home town Southend puts on, the words “gappy” & “disorganised” were made for it which is one of the reasons I dont bother with it anymore.
I think you will find that the engines are actually custom built jobs combining the best of the various engine models and not just later versions. Its one of the reasons she has been on the ground for so long as they wanted the powerplants to be more reliable than had previously been the case.
There is a blow by blow thread currently running over on WIX about the engine replacement, very interesting it is too.
:DWill we finally see a Blu-Ray release this year, standard def is “so last year”.
Re: the Hornet,………… if only 🙁
I’ve yet to see any of the new compilations in any of my local book stores which is unusual as they have carried them all in the past.
I hope that this dosent mean that sales have been disapointing as I would like to see more produced.
For those of you like myself who are Ian Kennedy fans the only remaining Commando story of his yet to be reprinted called “The Sand Devils” has just started to be serialised on the Commando web site.
Its about an elite british Marauder squadron operating in the desert and contains some stunning artwork, hopefully they will reprint a physical copy soon.
Here’s the link.
