My apologies if I’ve posted this in the wrong place.
This photograph was taken in May 1941. Can anyone identify the man’s armband?
Thank you.
Hi Fournier Boy,
I wouldn’t say I’m an expert, but I’ve got more eye-witness accounts of the Hess landing in Scotland than you can shake a stick at, and they all contradict one another. Let me know if I can help. Simon
Hi All,
Here’s a piece of film shot at Granja do Marqués [Sintra] in 1937.
http://www.cinemateca.pt/cinemateca-digital/Ficha.aspx?obraid=3148&type=Video
The movie description reads –
“Aerodromo da Granja do Marquês, Sintra. Fourths: Junkers JU 52 / 3M, Potez 25, Focke Wulf Wheie, Wickers Val Paraizo 3, Avro Gadet and Avro 626. Presence of the Chairman of the Board, António de Oliveira Salazar. | The arrival of 10 war plans to Granja do Marquês’ airfield in Sintra.”
Regards,
Simon
Many thanks, Longshot.
BTW, the second link throws up a 404.
Hi All,
Did the Red Cross operate any DC-3s during 1940/1941?
Many thanks.
Simon
Just found this in a piece on Whitchurch Airport.
“Paved taxiways and the east-west runway, 3048 feet long, were completed by the end of 1941.”
Thank you, Aviart. That’s exactly the information I needed. You’re a genius.
Here it is shown on perhaps the most famous Bf 110E of all.

Sorry, I have no idea. That’s why I was asking.
Bf 110
Hi All,
I would very much appreciate someone telling me the purpose of the circular hatch or whatever it is as indicated.
Thank you very much.

Thanks, Longshot,
I’ll have to wangle that particular detail.
This photograph is from The Sphere, 3rd August 1940. I don’t know if it’s your aircraft, as there are no location details, but the date is about right and it is a Bf 110.

Thank you, Eric,
You are all very generous with information.
One final [hopefully] question.
In May 1941 was Whitchurch grass or asphalt.

Simon
Hi Longshot,
Thank you.
Note to self: Must get a new pair of spectacles.

Simon
Hi Longshot,
Sorry, another question.
I came across this in my travels—
“Originally, five Douglas DC-3s and one Douglas DC-2 airliner were available [for the UK-Lisbon run], but with the loss of a DC-3 on 20 September 1940 in a landing accident at Heston, and the destruction of another DC-3 in November 1940 by Luftwaffe bombing at Whitchurch, only four aircraft remained.”
Are the registration markings of these two destroyed DC-3s known?
Regards,
Simon
