    Satellite Image of St Athan

    The resolution of the ‘satellite’ imagery of St Athan on Google-Maps is excellent.

    Not sure how up to date these images are (but you can clearly see a VC10 being scrapped).

    Type ‘St Athan, UK’ into the search field on the Google-Maps site and click the ‘satellite’ tab:

    (The imagery of RAF Cosford is awful but that of Duxford is excellent by the way.)

    An amazing life; full of history.

    Whoever does the obituaries in ‘that’ national newspaper should be allowed to do the defence/history articles – IMHO they seem to have a welcome respect for non-sensational accuracy and fact that other journalists should take note of.

    Does anyone know if there has been a book published on OTU losses similar to Ross’s Coastal Command Losses and Chorley’s Bomber Command Losses?

    I may be completely wrong, but I think I recall Mike Collett once telling me that BAe had passed design authority on the Shacks to Atlantique.

    I remember BAe passing on design authority for de Havilland products to (de Havilland Aviation?)…

    …except for the Mosquito! Do they know something we don’t?

    They probably kept design authority for the Lancaster and Shackleton too.

    A couple more pictures of this mystery piston.

    Assuming the following I’m hoping it’s a Napier Lion piston.

    It’s not a Lancaster piston but is probably British and has been cut-down into an ashtray by an RAF engine fitter in the traditional way.

    It’s the correct bore and has the correct number of rings. It also has a very distinctive oil hole to lubricate the gudgeon pin (see photo with screwdriver).

    Anybody know different?

    Hasn’t it?

    It did have at one time; WW2 possibly?

    I know some record attempt with an electric car was held up years ago due to some unexploded ‘ordnance’ problem.

    All vehicles were banned from the MOD Pendine Sands (range) in 2004 due to possible unexploded bombs.

    Pendine Sands was also where the land speed records were attempted in the UK before the beach got too small.

    I think I remember reading that BAe/MOD wouldn’t consider ‘adjusting’ the fatigue life of the airframe based on reduced loading (less fuel) if used for air displays.

    At the end of the day it is the support of the design authority that is important.

    You mean with its 1940’s vintage ex-Grumman Avenger AN/APS-20 radar? 😀

    Personally the most amazing thing about the Belfast was how quickly it got into service.

    Form project start in February 1959 to first delivery to 53 Squadron 20 January 1966…

    …and just Short Brothers on their own…in the 1950’s…no PC’s, no CAD, no CMC, no CFD, no FEA, etc, etc.

    How long have the RAF been waiting for the A400M. Since 1982?

    Political delays I know, but engineering too. First flight in 2008. Squadron service when?
