Nice work Bruce.
Now there is a coincidence: The original code of the the Mk V Spitfire JG891, nearing completion to flying at HFL, Duxford, when operational in New Guinea was…
UP-G of 79 Squadron RAAF
Mark
To avoid any confusion (for non-spotters) between Bruce’s Mosquito and MK12’s Spitfire, I have arranged for JG891 to wear a different set of codes, they’re actually on it right now. All will be revealled at the September show……. 😉
Looks like someone has got the roundel colours right for a change 😉
An innevitable mess, and a predictable ending. It all seemed very hopeful when it was saved by the RAF off of the Marham dump many years ago…….at least we had the enjoyment of all those extra years of it flying after the original out of service date.
Do I hear “Will it be at…..Cockpitfest 2007” anyone?
There was a guy a that I corresponded with after I did the paint job for TD248. He flew TD247 with 74 Sqn, at the time you speak of. Unfortunately I can’t find his name at present, but he was a member of the Spitfire Society Eastern branch (?) and lived in Westcliff or possibly Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. He might be able to help, perhaps someone in the society can point you in the right direction. If I find the name I’ll drop you a pm.
John Romain TA805, Al Walker RN201, Rod Dean SM845 and Cliff Spink TD248, don’t know about the other team line-ups but that’s what we fielded both days.
Good job you didn’t get your camera out to photograph the lads when you were in at ARC Melv, you’d have come away with images of some ghostly shadows wrestling to get the Aurora out of Area 51 for the next mission 😀

What no tractors in the picture? 😀
JU52 as mentioned above. The 108 hadn’t arrived when I left at 17:30.
Only other arrival was the Hawk 75 returning from France.Pretty slow day really (weather was pants until around 3) the only other movements being TFCs P51 pair, Irish T9 Spit and TFC Spit XIV just as I was leaving…
Pretty slow eh? I expect you get that sort of warbird activity anywhere on a normal day…….I mean you see Mustangs doing extremely close formation aero’s all the time don’t you  You could always go down the road to Stansted, I’m sure they have more movements for you. We”ll try to lay on a bit more “free” activity for you tomorrow, a few Spitfires and maybe the Buchon (if we let it out of our “secret area 51”) perhaps, oh and we’ll try not to do too much towing…..it spoils the pictures apparently
Oh by the way it’s a good job you saw that Irish T9 today, it won’t be on show at the weekend-too many Yaks. Hang on aren’t they trainers……….thought they wern’t allowed 😀
From the latest update here: http://fighter-collection.com/pages.php it looks as though the mk14 canopy is well in hand.
Actually Digby got it done without too much trouble (or cursing?) and it was aloft from DX this afternoon 🙂
What’s with everyone trying to join the exclusive “Soft-Top Warbird Club”? We’ve had Rob Davies and now Stephen in recent weeks. Surely they must be aware that the pack leader is our own “Clueless”, who has the highest hours, having flown all the way back from Fairford a while back in the soft-top XVl model 😉
It was Spitfire T9 PT462/G-CTIX doing some flying from Sandown over the weekend.
did notice that the spit v from arco is the desert camo one which has yet to fly. surely pushing it….
Is that you want us to push it? We’d rather get someone sitting in it with that big fan thing whirling around at the front or we could always tow it….but then again there are people elsewhere on here who don’t like aircraft being towed, ruins their pictures apparently
There is very little chance of it even being out of the hangar let alone flying. The colour scheme that I’ve put together for the owner hasn’t been applied yet and you wouldn’t want to miss that now would you? Should definately make the September Spitfire show along with RW386 🙂
there were plenty of aircraft movements during the day. Mostly behind a tractor though.
Brian
Well they are a bit heavy for us to move with our teeth and the tractors do have their own fans as well……
Someone somewhere will remember “The adventures of Terrance the Tug” 🙂
Or perhaps you were under the impression that the aircraft get moved by magic fairies between 18:00 and 10:00 when there’s no-one to capture them on camera?
Crickey, what a large step ladder.
DS
And I hate to think about the size of his windbreak and coolbox 😀
If memory serves me right the Sea fury that WOGB had was an FB11 and was ferried back stateside by Mike Wright ie it was a single seater not dual controlled in any way shape or form
I remember Pete Shepherd displaying VX302/G-BCOV at Biggin Hill in 1978 or 79…….awesome stuff, down the valley and all! I’m sure it was in this scheme and painted at Gatwick, possibly through B.Cal, but definately initially as a two seat canopy arrangement? It was previously in Tempest type cammo as “D-A” and before that with Mike Stow as “MW-S”. I think it was passed to Rick Drury in the states and initially raced in the same scheme. Its Blackbushe partner at the time was VX281/G-BCOW which was in the Korean scheme and went to Spencer Flack at Elstree until he disposed of it when G-FURY was ready. Last went to storage with the Sanders facility after Amjet packed up. Think its for sale now….. 🙂
Maybe Merlin Magic can tell us some more?
