I once heard a story about a pilot who was flying an aeobatic a/c across the channel when a wing started to fold. he flipped the a/c over and continued inverted to France, some 30 miles away, rolled upright and landed sharpish. Can’t remember names or a/c type though.

I believe the original plan was to base this a/c at Kidlington but I don’t know if this still stands. With regard to balancing props/spinners as far as I recall from my days at CSE, props were only balance with the backplate. This may have been because the cone wasn’t supplied when sent for servicing, it may have been balanced at manufacture and indexed to the backplate though. GRP spinner cones have been used on some sports planes.

Nice to see a 605 Sqn aircraft represented, is there any significance in UP-W being chosen ?

Hurricane, there are shadows which means sunshine so that should narrow the date down a bit. Is it an illusion or is the port u/c door bent ?

I may be wrong but I believe they are stored at the Imperial War museum. I seem to remember the 101 Sqn archives arriving when we reformed in 1984. Record books, silverware, medals, pictures etc etc. We were allowed to take what we wanted to display in the squadron and the rest was boxed up and returned.

There was one at RAF Swinderby in 1978, I don’t know what became of it though.

Hmmmm, no mid upper turret? Can anyone tell me which variant this was ? I have just started building a 90″ span RC flying model and I am looking for something a little unusual to base it on.

I once read an April fool joke article that detailed the design of a 500mph turbo prop Spitfire that was dubbed the ‘Gasfire’.

The name escapes me but there was a German who crashed/baled out in Southern Ireland, made his way to the North and joined the RAF and serveed for a number of years before being discovered. A story worthy of being made into a film I think.

Would it not be possible to new build a batch of engines? People remanufacture other components or is it all the crud with product liability?

It is possible but at what cost in terms of money ?
