JDK,
Unfortunately Mr Weeks plans aren’t even that good! I asked him about the Lanc 4 weeks ago when I was there. I can’t remember the EXACT quote, but it went something along the lines of ‘I haven’t got time to me messing about with large 4 engined British bombers’ –Thank you Mr Weeks… Then you just leave it there in those containers – I couldn’t think of a better home!!!!
I’ve been looking at the cost of Grumman Trackers over the last 3 weeks, so this thread has been an interesting read!
have a look at this… http://www.aircraftdealer.com/aircraft_for_sale_detail/Grumman_Twin/_GRUMMAN_S2_TRACKER_TORPEDO/11454.htm
Does anyone know if the tracker would be elagable for a C or A, or would it have to fly on a permit?
Regards
Bearing in mind that no count / poll was ever carried out as to which of the Auster owners wanted to stay on a CofA and which would like to go onto a permit, then I’m afraid much of what we hear is just hearsay (T6Flyer & Blue max!!!). Also BlueRobin… The ‘guys who run the club’ had no say in the matter!!! As long as someone is willing to take on the TRA, then the CAA have a duty to grant the aircraft with a CofA. Also, as there is at least one commercial operator in the UK, then their needs should be taken into consideration… As should the hundreds of Austers flying in Australia. Any poll conducted should also consider their needs / preferences. I know that there was a lot of bad feeling ‘flying’ about the subject, but from what I understand, the Australians were / are very much in favour of the CofA (although again, that may be just rumours!)… As are a significant number of British owers who bought a CofA aircraft and are happy that it will stay that way (at least for the time being!)
Anyway, back to the main subject…
Warbirdfinder… I’ve no idea for the reasons behind the comments you made in your post, nor do I wish to know… I would however just like to say that I think a lot can be expected from Mr Cooper and the Il2… I have seen the aircraft on several occasions, and I think it’s magnificent. I take my hat of to Gerry and the team.
Is this of any interest? It’s not mine… I just stumbled across it!
First things first, and credit where it’s due. Legends was, and is a fantastic display. There is certainly no where in the UK where you can see that kind of flying on that scale.
However…. For legends to continue, it has to get people through the gates. I fear that at £30 it’s going to get too expensive for the ‘average’ family. It’s different on here. All the people writing have an active interest in aircraft, but for Mr & Mrs Smith, £100 for a day out is getting a bit too steep. The danger is that as the price goes up, the numbers will fall. Fewer people will mean less money to pay for aircraft… I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you, but less aircraft means that fewer people will come… It’s a viscous circle. Add on top of that another £4 per person to actually see the aircraft that you’ve just paid to see… I fear that it is a slippery slope. How about lowering the price and getting more people though the gates? I’m I alone on this? I was talking with a lot of people there ion the day who said it was just getting too expensive.
Aside from that, it was a fantastic display. Who owns the sky raider that few? Also, who was flying at the show?
Finally Duxford…. You need to pay for the bins to be emptied of a Saturday night… Talk about a flight safety hazard!
tapclassic,
Thanks for posting these pics… I’m going to Warsaw in August and was hoping to visit an aircraft museum while I was there… Is this one easy to find / well advertised? I visited the one in Krakow last year… I’ll post some pics later.
Steve,
I fully agree with you… there is no need for anyone of here to make personal attacks against other posters just because of their opinions.
Reading back through the Vulcan thread, it becomes clear that the ‘tension’ was raised when good old mark (VX927) said that he felt the Walton’s were out of order in charging £400K for the use of the hangar. People can agree with that, or they can disagree. And for me, they can voice their opinions on here. But I made no attack against any one on here. Then we got the allegations of rape etc, etc. Following that, I said enough was enough and posted no more. It was getting out of hand. Then, several weeks later, someone else makes a post and yet again one certain individual accuses me of making it. I hope that me asking that individual to grow up hasn’t been the trigger for this new thread.
Damien – I really think that it’s time you grew up. Suddenly because there is someone else in Lincolnshire who agrees with one of my posts, you assume that we must be the same person. You really do need to grow up. It’s about as pathetic as the rape allegations… Please… grow up.
AE Ldr – While there are some (most) on here who will openly debate the subject of the Vulcan, you’ll find that there is a ‘hard core’ of devoted fans who just wont have a bad word said about anyone or anything at Bruntingthorpe. – I think you’re fighting a loosing battle.
I have just got back from the base… I went to say hello to Nigger, and a prayer for those who are no longer with us… God bless you all.
There’s an eary feeling up there tonight… The only sound came from an owl somewhere on the base. I’d have loved to the BBMF to have brought the Lancaster up for the evening… Just for the sound alone!
Anyway, while it’s a awful photograph, I thought I’d share this with you… It was taken tonight, 16th may 2006!
Enough said!
Kind regards
Mark
I’ve obviously caused some offence here and for that I apologise, but there are a few points I’d make!
Damien, I’ve seen it on other posts & I’ve seen it on other forums. Once again, you speak with no authority and make assumptions without having the decency to apologise for them. I made it perfectly clear in my first post that if I was speaking out of turn, then I was genuinely sorry. And I still am. You however speak out of turn without any remorse. Oh well, some things never change! – As for being anonymous. There are no secrets and if you just thought back a little while to the photographs that you posted to my house them you’d know exactly who I was!!!!! It’s hardly rocket science give that I go by the name of VX927 and I quite clearly live at Scampton! I have said nothing on here that I wouldn’t say to anyone involved in the project.
Firebird…. I’m not sure what you’re getting at there? No, I couldn’t move it there but at £400,000 per/???? to keep her at Bruntingthorpe, it would be with looking for somewhere else if and when she flies – Perhaps Scampton is just the place!
I’m still a big supporter of this project. I have been ever since she arrived at Bruntingthorpe. I’ve clearly got something thing wrong in the previous messages, but still, I think it’s a shame to have charged us all £400,000!
Anyway, sorry for any offence caused!
Philip Turland and texantomcat… You’re both highly defensive over my post but may I suggest that you both go back and read it again! I see no mention of blame anywhere in that. The point I’m making is that they managed for 10 years without an income from the hangar. Now, since the aircraft no longer belongs to them, they want £400,000. That’s £400,000 they didn’t need a couple of years ago. It’s a shame that they cant support the project by offering the use of the hangar. I’d love to be able to find somewhere that could…
Texantomcat… “the Waltons paid for a large chunk of the restoration work on the Vulcan AND were NOT charging the project rent in a hangar from where they could easily raise £5k a week” – What your point there? It was THEIR project! I’m restoring an aircraft in my garage… I don’t change myself £250/month for that!
Philip…I never once questioned the ‘niceness’ of Mr Walton. I couldn’t agree more with you, Mr Walton was a wonderful man and I’m still extremely grateful for the day he let me climb aboard his Vulcan for a high speed taxi… But I go back to my original point… They must be laughing all the way to the back! You can say what you like… I think, (as do many others) that a small group of people have made a lot of money from this, and it’s been at the expense of the British public… I just hope that they’re not left disappointed as this could have huge implications. Suddenly those who have done so much could very quickly undo all their good work and donations to aircraft restorations could become very hard to come by (as if they’re not already hard enough!).
Without having done too much research to back up the claim I’m about to make, it seems to me that Mr Walton is laughing all the way to the back! He spent 10 years+ banging on to us about how he wants to see it fly, realises that he cant make it happen so he sells it, to the country and then charges us £400,000 for the pleasure of keeping it in his hangar. That sounds absolutely outrageous! If I’ve got the wrong end of the stick there, then please accept my apologies, but on the face of it, that’s how it looks to me! I say pack it all up, put in a few boxes and bring it here to Scampton!
Sorry, rant over!
HHA – It was good to see a couple of your hunters getting their engines run at the weekend… How many serviceable hunters have you got up here at Scampton?
