Drawings still exist for the Henley….from memory do I remember seeing a picture where Hawker used a Henley to test either the Sabre or Vulture installations before the relevant airframes were ready? something to do with testing cooling? I am pretty sure there is a photograph in one christopher thomas/shores book.

Been trying to do that for years, as well as some of the other guys interested in typhoons. As I have entitled before the parts are out there it is just a problem getting them in one place. Still keep trying…..one day 🙂

I believe the design authority would be with the parent company which is now BAe, they have a copy of all the surviving Hawker drawings but will not let them out of their sight at present (seems we have gone the opposite way to the americans regarding the use of drawings…gone are the days of a promise not to blame them for any problems caused by me or anyone else)

I didn’t really want to get involved with the ins and outs of getting a sabre running….the fact that I have heard from more than one experienced person that merlins weren’t as reliable as it was made out during the war was just an example of the bad rap the sabre had and that the merlin could do no wrong. I also know that an inhibited unused engine still has to be stripped, again I was trying to indicate that there are engines out there that could be called on as a basis for a rebuild so it doesn’t necessarily mean a new engine has to be manufactured as seems to have been suggested.

I have done many years research into the typhoon so I like to think I may know a little about them so i will leave it to everyone else to argue the possibilities, survivors, requirements etc to get a typhoon built.

Having studied the typhoon for many years I have gained a little knowledge about them….and have followed this thread with interest. As has already been stated anything is possible 🙂 as to what can happen

Engines….I have so far found the existence of 30 engines in various states. Ignoring kermits I can think of 2 that were never used and were inhibited from new. I can imagine these would be a good starting point, ignoring any recoveries/finds that could be made.
Airframe…there are enough parts to produce a complete centre section that would have a known identity. If the rumours/research is true then there are a couple of sets of wings about. The late mike Cookmans research indicated there was a set somewhere in Staffordshire….one of only a couple of locations in the uk that could make sense. There are drawings around and many of the wings themselves…for such a big airplane they are very simple (when compared to types such as the p-40 or even the spitfire) so they could be made provided enough money. This also ignores any recoveries that could be made.

Having read the comments on the sabre then everything I have found out indicates that they were very reliable by the end of the war…they were used I the tempest for a while. I have even spoken to people who have experience and say that they were more reliable than the merlin and could easily make it to the service interval!!! Everyone likes to believe the bad reports….they were phased out quickly because they didn’t need the numbers when they had the tempest!

I did get a price a while ago on this one….it was the same price as the swift that is currently for sale 🙁 the other MKII tempest that was for sale not so long ago was half the price…

I guess things are worth what people are prepared to pay for them….and this has been for sale for a long time 🙂

‘Both’ tempest cockits along with a rear fuselage and tail were sold a couple of years ago…they have since moved on again and I believe they are with a well known restorer. The cockpit with this project was stripped I believe for the RAF Museums MKII in exchange for the fuselage. The better of the cockpits has indeed disappeared after being used as patterns for a few projects. Anyone know where it is or last was then please let me know 🙂

Cosford have various 20mm cannons on display next to the Huricane and mustang. I am sure with prior arrangement you should be able to measure them.

I can’t remember from my visit if there are any cannon in the Museum Reserve Stores but they did pull the cannon for the Typhoon from stores when it came back with them missing.

I seem to remember that all 4 cannon were recovered from the Typhoon parts on display in Bayeux if anyone is round there.

Not sure if this has been seen before but right at the end of this news clip for the whirlwind there is a view of G-AGOI at westlands being broken up…about 1min in a 1.02 second video.

I know where one Typhoon rudder ended up (although not 100% sure where it currently is as a large number of items changed hands a few times recently)…was there more than one there? The one I saw was a brand new unused and uncovered item. There was also a fuel tank for a tempest with the same rudder. Did the Tempest ailerons get scrapped?

    Wings in Staffordshire area

sorry if this is hijacking the thread but talking of wings I was told years ago that while searching for aircraft parts in the ‘Staffordshire’ area Mike Cookman found a pair of wings (I think via a tip off from a local ATC unit) that were being used as a fence on a farm. Unfortunately I believe Mike passed away so was never able to confirm anything….anyone else hear about that? Like many area Staffordshire in general was stacked full of aircraft being scrapped in the 40’s and indeed many parts had been rescued over the years from the brownhills scrap yard.

This has been bugging me for years so any confirmation of these (postive or negative) would be fantastic

I would love to say it was Typhoon…unfortunately I am pretty sure it isn’t. If it were Typhoon it would have to be a section outboard of the dihedral as the wing root spars are of a girder type construction. The large gap in picture 2 seems to be where a fuel tank should be and at this point, if Typhoon, it would have evidence of the inboard cannon. The rear spar is not ‘boxed’ in like this one it should have a series of holes like the rib on display. Finally the access panels on the top do not seem to match a Typhoon. Having said what I think it isn’t I have no idea what it could be…being slightly biased towards them I would love to be proved wrong and find out it is Typhoon. Anyone have other pictures of it showing different angles?
