“I did a few years ago come across some references about a preserved rear fuselage in a European museum, Germany I think, but the museum had at that time been closed for a while and I have seen no mention of it since. So presumed it was just a rumor. Perhaps there is more?”

I have always based any possibility of one day there being another Typhoon displayed on there being a single large section remaining…something that could provide that old chestnut ‘identity’ and a detailed history. There are many cockpits around and a couple that do have identities but it was when I accidentally came across a large section surviving in Holland that still had the RAF identity displayed and fully documented history that I thought one day…you never know. So when I read this thread and right in the middle of it a paragraph about the possibility of a whirlwind fuselage it reminded of the time I heard about the Typhoon section…it would be a fantastic start for a whirlwind project. Has anyone ever looked into this further? It doesn’t suprise me that large parts can remain in storage for this length of time without being public knowledge…is it perhaps like many Typhoon stories I have heard of the years and just wishful thinking? Have you come across these rumours Jerry (Brewer)? It would be fantastic news if it has survived…even if presently the owners did not want it to move on.

The wings that I had heard of were in staffordshire (rather large area). I believe it originate with Mike in that a local ATC unit had found some Typhoon wings being used as fencing by a farmer…didn’t hear anything to narrow down the area but always assumed it was Lichfield area…not far from the scrapping and surrounded by lots of farms!!

I have always thought that there was alot more surviving in France than I know about but getting contact with someone is always difficult.

in answer to what parts are surviving…if the rumours of wings is ever found to be true then enough for another complete typhoon. However, it would be very difficult to get all these parts together.

    Cees,
I had the same rumour about the wings over here…so that may be 2 sets 🙂 Unfortunately Mike passed away before I could talk to him about this, did anyone ever talk to him about the wings? have any more information? I do know the general area (by word of mouth) and it makes sense as one of the surviving cockpit sections was from the same area. Totally plausible esp. when you get the oppotunity to climb on MN235 and see just how big they are….a ready made fence!!!

There must be more out there….and I am slowly listing what is left. One day there will be a 2nd genuine Typhoon 🙂

Mine was from another source but is the same as the link…crying shame about this one although the RAF were just as bad with their last one, well before they found out there was a spare in the US!!!

There have been a number of rumours of a pair of wings surviving in France…never been confirmed. You never know they could be from this machine and somewhere in Belgium instead 🙂 one can dream I suppose 🙂

I came across a picture of a Typhoon that I believe was taken on by the belgians at a technical training school. It is somewhat of a mystery as to what happened to it and I can’t remember off the top of my head the registration of said typhoon but it would likely have been an aircraft that went unservicable, would most likey have cost more to repair and transport back for scrap than to leave where it is. If I can dig out the copy of the picture I will post….

quite right….jumped in on the serial and didn’t take enough notice of the detail. If I remember rightly 7881 was never converted back to standard issue (if of course I even remembered the serial correctly) so this must have been pre-conversion.

without my notes around this is off the top of my head (I know its sad knowing serial numbers) but R7881 is the single night fighter…you can tell the antenna on the wing tips. It is looking pretty fresh and I think it has yet to have its paint changed…does this mean it is on the airfield where the mods were completed?

The firewall that I picked up from Peter Woods had an identification…whenever a Typhoon went back for mods the serial number was stencilled on the firewall. The last number was faded when I first went to see it, R882…, but when I went back to pick it up Peter had ‘cleaned it up’ for me (with wire wool). No longer identifiable!!!

Not sure if any other firewalls were identified but the Typhoons scrapped at South Cernery could be identified from publications & RAF records.

I was in touch with Ron Murphy a few years ago and he seemed to drop off the radar all of a sudden. I have tried to get hold of him on and off since then but with no luck…trying to trawl my memory with some of the details he gave me at the time but wanted to chat with someone who was actually there.

I thought there was some spit stuff there because if I remember correctly Peter Wood (seafire & hornet engines!!!) was involved with Ron in getting the project up and running.

what happened to the items at Bayeux? The pics I saw included a recovered Sabre and a large selection of other items (there were 3 cannons on display from the pic I remember)

there are some quite large Typhoon remains at the Bayeux museum. The pictures I have seen do not show all they have and have had no luck in replies from them. If you happen to make it there would love to see some pics of what they have.

Unless I am mistaken the wings appear to be one piece…therefore I assume cannot be Typhoon or Tempest. Could this be the centre section of a Hurricane? the undercarriage is inward and part of the centre section…the undercarriage legs appear to be Hawker type

Don Shaw wrote a drama for the BBC on Bomber Harris starring John Thaw…he completed extensive research including first hand accounts from Bomber Harris’ wife (I can’t remember if he said he spoke to Harris himself or they were accounts from his wife and personal letters). It is a great watch and very interesting, he hosted evenings to raise money for the comet racer project group and gave us all a background on the research process, the man himself and then introduced the drama. The drama introduces the notion that Bomber Harris was hung out to dry by Churchill. He had reservations about the bombing amd questioned Churchills motives but was effectively ordered to do it. However, when the actions and policy was condemned Churchill backed off and pointed all fingers at Harris. After the war Harris quit Britain for South Africa in disgust over the treatment of Bomber Command Crews (and I guess the treatment he personally received).

Very sad treatment of very brave men by self serving politicians (nothing changes in 65 years!!) that has never been rectified in my eyes.

We had actually had dry weather for the open day on 3rd May. Could this be a first for a bank holiday in the UK? As far as the members who conducted the tours were concerned it was a success. I know at least a couple of forum members made the journey to Derby to see the project so thank you to them for making the effort, and to everyone else of course, and I hope you enjoyed it.

While the fuselage was turned the correct way up again (with the bottom cowl fitted) some new photographs were taken which will appear on the web site soon…and I will try to update it a little more regularly when time and progress allows.

For anyone that missed the 3rd we have the last ‘official’ open day of the year on the 14th June, however the project is always available to see on any airfield open days, fly-ins or perhaps a celebration of the anniversary of the race later in the year (assuming that there is a member free to show you round of course or you have the time to wait until there is).

If anyone has any feedback from the day feel free to let me know…we may be able to incorporate changes or additions to the next open day.
