Memory…
Don’t you just hate it when that happens? My memory seems to have been going for years (and i’ve only just reached 30!!!)
Hypnotist…
Thats a shame…I take it that you read it somewhere? Local article or national magazine? Do you remember any region names at all?
I sent you a PM Snapper…
Hope you don’t mind!!!
Wings…
Any leads you may have would be more than I have at the moment…do you remember where you heard this? Any contacts that may know?
Feel free to mail me… dave@rmrobinson.fsnet.co.uk
Sabres…
p.s. after initial teething problems the I am lead to believe the Sabre was no more unreliable than the Merlin was…they all suffered when pushed to the max every time they went up. They can’t have been that bad for the RAF still to be using them in the Tempest TT5 into the 50s.
Typhoons…
After spending years looking into it the Tiiffies Airframe is of a simple construction and one that could easily be replicated. I have been unable to get drawings so far…but throughout Europe there are all parts to measure apart from wings (there are rumoured to be some in France but no-one has confirmation…anyone?). Until MN235 has her turn for restoration (after cllimbing all over her last year then this must be getting towards to top of the list for a make-over) then the wings will be elusive without those drawings. The most difficult part is the Sabre. There are a couple of dozen Sabres in existence with perhaps only 5 or 6 of those capable of being made airworthy. I know guys that are willing to try this but a. getting your hands on them and b. actually doing it is another matter. I keep trying though!!!
Castle Bromwich
This one seems to come about all the time…afterall it was from this area that the equipment required to build new Spitfire main spars was ‘found’ which has enabled so many to continue. I spoke to a gentleman a couple of years ago who had been a building contractor at Castle Bromwich during the 90s. They had been order to clear some ground and they came to the floor of an old building….he tells me that they found a merlin in a packing crate complete with some paperwork. He does not know what happend to the engine as his boss then ‘took over’ and disposed of it!!!
There are a few people who say that the location of remains are known but the people in charge of the area want to keep any monies that are made from selling recovered parts…fair enough for some of it to be ploughed back in to the local area…but they wanted the money in advance and vastly overvalued what is believed to be there. If this is true then while there is any possibility of any money to be made then the engines and/or airframe parts will simply carry on rotting!!!

The photo of Aylesbury…in the background on the left hand side there looks like a pile of piston engines….I believe that it was the fifties that the Tempests started arriving there could this be the remains of some Sabre Engines?

Throttle…
Being a bit cheeky…would you consider selliing it to go into my Typhoon project?
RE:682al
Looking at your pics of the throttle quadrant…is that what I think it is? 🙂 Hawker by any chance?
Dave
South Cereney
This is where many of the existing Typhoon parts came from. I have a bulk head and many of the cockput brackets. There are many more floating around. Unfortunately the bulk of the recovery was scrapped after the original recoverers (after Spitfire parts I believe) had some problems!!!
Dave
How are you doing? Been a while since I met you at Shoreham…you mentioned there that you would try to find out if you could get any Typhoon drawings from the same contact as the Hornet drawings. Unfortunately I lost my book with your contact details on shortly after Shoreham and finally I can get in contact with you again. Any luck with the drawings?
Dave
RE: Graeme C
I have been trying to put together a centre section for a Typhoon for years now…problem is drawings!!! I have been trying to get some out of BAe for years now, unsuccessfully, so if you know anyone I would love to hear from you 🙂
682al’s post…
Great picture of the Typhoon/Tempests in the yard…the cockpits are remarkably complete with ancilliaries!!! If only I was around then!! I personally know Typhoons…but I can tell you that these look like Tempest MKVs, esp as there are such a large number here during the 60s. By 1947 there were only a few Typhoons left but Tempest TT.5 target tugs had just been retired by the mid 50s.
Do you have any other pics of these parts?
