Try the Nigerian air force (Makurdi airport) – they should still have a few Jaguar airframes lying about, according to Google maps?

    Forgotten to ask.
I found that the aeroplane would or could be armament with a 20mm gun… Were should it be placed?
    Jan

A single 20 mm cannon on a single-engined piston aircraft?
    Through the propeller hub, naturally…;)

??? Internal bays weren’t new in the 1950s. Think of all those WW2 bombers. They were pretty common on tactical aircraft designed in the late 1940s & 1950s, as well as larger bombers.

Seriously, how many WW2 bombers could launch in salvo, air-to-air missiles at supersonic speeds from trampoline launcher rails from 50,000 feet or so?
There’s a big difference between the F-106’s missiles-internal-bay system, and dropping small loose dumb bombs through a hatch at 250 knots…

This provokes the question; what is the officially cleared maximum speed the F-106 could fire missiles from its internal bay (the top speed of the F-106 is mach 23-2.5, btw)?

I think what TR1 means is, no Kuwaiti M84s actually engaged Iraqi forces, fired any shots at them, although I don’t remember the details.

Why would they be afraid of the MKI, the Su-27SM is better at a knife fight.

    :p

It is? you’re probably right, but the MKI has an extra pair of eyes – very important in WVR combat, or so they say.

SM has newer engines so should have better thrust-to-weight than MKI, am I right?

Yeah, the internal bay was a pretty advanced feature for a 1950s design. The F-105 also had an internal bay and S-bend inlet ducts – all you needed then was to spray on some ram and you had yourself a genuine stealth design!;)

Just the thing to avoid all those “flying telegraph poles” over Vietnam in the 1960s…

I don’t want you saying anything bad about the “Six” – or the F-105 either…:)

Two of the most glorious aircraft to come out of the 1950s…

Do countries have to be invited if they are to be allowed to attend Red Flag? Would Russia accept if they were invited?

Fuel efficiency was never a priority in the Soviet Union.

Yeah, i’ve seen that clip on youtube somewhere:)

There was an UK and US pilots downplaying all those stunts made by the Russian.
But when the Russian duel offer came up, they stuffed their hole..:D

no one wants a duel against a flanker

The fact is “UK and US pilots” dual against Flankers all the time – Indian air force Flankers. has no one here ever heard of Red Flag, or the “Indra-Dhanush’ joint exercise” in India?

Where does the RuAF actually go for dissimilar combat training? I don’t think they even go to India (afraid of the Su-30MKI, perhaps:rolleyes:)?

Beriev is Georgian, born Giorgi Mikheilis Dze Beriashvili. In fact most of Soviet-Russia’s aircraft talent are from Kavkaz/Caucasus. Artem Mikoyan, and Russian aircraft big boss, Mikhail Pogosyan are Armenian. Russia needs Caucasians to innovate their industries, Caucasians need Russia for the opportunity win win.. although Beriev may be turning over in his grave the day Beriev aircraft is used on Georgia 🙁

Indeed it’s true. And would you believe that some of the most talented aircraft engineers to work in the United States aircraft industry were also born in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Be-12 was used for over 40 years, and a lot more were made.

Performance wise, I would imagine the Be-200 is clearly ahead.

I’m not going to argue which is the best aircraft for the job, I don’t know.
I was just wondering how someone could have an opinion one way or another on such an esoteric and arcane topic as the application of amphibian aircraft in the Search-and-Rescue role.

It’s a good bet Trident was referring to the “short legs”

What 1950s interceptor design didn’t have ‘short legs’?

I’m sticking to russian designs on this type of a/c ever since Be-12

Why, have you ever flown one?

I might go for the Shin Meiwa and it 40 years of operational experience…

    … for about 30 seconds 😉

Is that the truth? I would have thought it could fly a lot longer than that?

It’s been widely published. Typhoon does not need A/B to go supersonic.

Indeed. It is probably more fuel efficient to use afterburner to reach supercruise speed – Concorde does the same.
